Extra's Guide to Surviving a Dark Fantasy World-Chapter 74: The First Wave
I was in some serious trouble. Should I just try to play this off?
Finished with their awes, the group soon continued forward, and I tried to act nonchalant, completely ignoring Soren, slowly inching closer to my position. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
I obviously didn’t react, instead opting to simply walking forward in the silence as we soon exited the city and walked down into the forest outside.
Half of the journey was almost done, and we hadn’t faced a single attack since the one before.
I couldn’t even tell if it was a good or bad thing. Good because this might be an indication that the academy wasn’t coordinating attacks on us, and bad because if they were and we hadn’t been attacked for almost half of the way, then we were about to face something very terrible.
Unfortunately, it was a bad scenario.
We hadn’t taken the first step in when the air around us grew still, and a heavy silence settled over the forest.
Something was wrong; I could feel it to my core. Besides me, Soren paused as well, feeling the same way.
Suddenly, the sounds of low growls echoed around us, and the first pair of yellow eyes appeared through the trees, followed by more and more, until there were hundreds of eyes staring right at us.
"Shields Up," Aria shouted as the first group of Glyms emerged, lunging outwards with their claws extended. The shield-bearers in the front raised their shields barely in time, but the impact still made them stagger.
A fireball flew out from the center of the formation, before exploded into the nearest Glyms, lighting up the clearing, but the beast didn’t stop, instead it seemed enraged by the sudden attack.
Seylith yelled, "Form up! Don’t let them surround us!" But the Glyms were already circling our formation, cutting off any escape routes.
I gripped my sword, heart pounding, and prepared for the oncoming wave. One Glym rushed me with a roar. Deadly Intuition roared as I activated Ember Cloak, surrounding myself in a layer of fire before swinging my sword, flames bursting out from my blade.
The sword pierced through the Glym’s chest but stopped in between; at the same time, The Glym decided to counterattack, raising his claws and aiming for my neck.
Oh no.
Deadly Intuition activated as I immediately let go of the sword and ducked down, missing the claw by a hair’s breadth. What was happening? Why was this group so much stronger than those runts back in the city?
At the same time, another Glyms pounced on me, attacking from my sides. I barely dodged one before it tore into the tree beside me.
This was my chance; I immediately took out a second blade from the spatial storage and pounced on the first Glym, my blade gleaming under the sunlight as I once again activated Ember Cloak.
The blade tore through the creature’s neck, sending its head high up in the air. I didn’t waste any time either and immediately lunged at the second Glym behind me, giving it a similar death.
How the hell was I supposed to deal with these things while hiding my strength? For a second, I contemplated using Static Timefall and Shroud before immediately throwing the idea out of my head.
Aria was sure to make a connection between me and Zane if she saw me using those spells.
I would just have to make do with this; besides, I wasn’t the only one who was holding back.
Not too far from me, I could see Soren, with his spear thrusting through the air and crimson runes glowing around his body. He snared a Glym with a blood magic whip, yanking it toward him.
Soren’s spear struck the Glym’s throat, barely piercing through it despite his blood magic binding it in place.
At the same time, another Glym pounced from his left. Soren’s magic immediately flared up, blood pouring from his palm as he drove his spear into the ground. Crimson tendrils shot out, barely impaling it in the ground.
Yep, definitely holding back. The Soren I knew from the book would have easily taken out double those creatures in half the time he had now. This was quite surprising, considering that, in the books, he had been the first one to display his powers, trying his best to get to the first position in student rankings.
What could have changed?
Sadly, I didn’t have the time to ponder as Deadly Intuition screamed, and another group of Glyms shot at me, prompting me to defend myself with the basic movements of my Salhira.
It was almost sad; this was the perfect place for me to let loose and practice my Salhira, killing everything with my fangs. But something told me that this test wasn’t as simple as it seemed, aside from separating the sheep from the leaders.
There was something else going on here, and I had a sneaking suspicion that we were being watched.
Still, it was fortunate that not all of us were holding back. Out in the front, I could see another Glym charging at Aria, who, with a flick of her wrist, exploded a wave of ice from her hands, freezing the beast’s legs in place before another ice spike shot through its skull without hesitation.
Besides her, Seylith raised his sword as well, casting a blinding light that sent the nearest beasts retreating.
He further gripped his sword, motes of light swirling around it as he jumped into the fray. One Glym came at him from the left, claws slashing, yet he met it head-on, his blade effortlessly cleaving through its side, vision of light erupting on impact.
The beast’s corpse had barely touched the ground, and Seylith was already moving, his sword slicing through the air in fluid arcs, light flashing with every strike as he cut down one Glym after another.
I hated to admit it, but this psychopath was perhaps the best ally to have during our current situation.
