Chapter 42: The Voice That Lurks In The Darkness

"Primordial Demon Mode."

POOF!

A sudden burst of steam shot from Zogratis’s hardened body, followed by a massive explosion that reshaped the battlefield. Everyone raised their hands to shield their eyes from the swirling dust.

"What’s going on!?" Elene cried out as they all struggled to steady themselves against the sudden gust of wind that had reshaped the battlefield.

Mazmuth trembled at the demon lieutenant’s words and took a step back as the dust around him began to clear. What emerged from the fading cloud struck fear into the hearts of all who looked upon Zogratis.

"...." Xander stood speechless, his whole body trembling as he stared at Zogratis.

"This is bad, no matter how you look at it." Mazmuth said.

The Primordial Demon Mode.

It was the final form of every demon in the infernal realm. It revealed their true form, heightened their senses and increase the output of their power to it’s maximum.

"Mere humans made me use it? Unacceptable! Now you will understand first hand, the power of a Primordial Demon!" Zogratis exclaimed.

His body shifted as he entered his primordial demon mode. Two massive wings burst from his back, his skin darkened and hardened into an armored shell lined with sharp spikes and twisted horns, giving him a fearsome, monstrous appearance.

Each step he took shook the ground. His eyes were fixed on the two who proved more dangerous than the most, Rai and Elene, but he focused mostly on Rai. The strange attack he used before, the Raisen, carried the foul scent of Primordial Essence, and the worst kind of it all.

"I... Overrule." With a soft utter, a massive torrent of energy burst out from Zogratis’s body, roaring in every direction. A powerful shockwave from the technique’s activation blew them all backwards, even the massive Primordial beast was blown off his feet.

And then, everything it touched was instantly erased, crumbling into ashes as if it had never existed. The trees, the ground, even the particles of dust that was rose up into the sky was disintegrated.

"W—What?" From the floor, their eyes wavered as they saw the full destructive power of Zogratis’s Overrule. Now that he has activated the Primordial Demon Mode, all his abilities has been amplified to a level that was far beneath him. Even with the Earth’s Beast Essence, their attacks barely damaged him.

"How the hell are we supposed to beat that thing..."

Rai grunted softly, he never expected things to take a much darker turn. "Earth beast, I know you might find my request insulting. But we’ll need your help in taking that thing down." Rai said, asking for Mazmuth’s aid.

"As much as I hate to admit it human child, I’ll require your aid as well." Mazmuth with a heavy heart confessed, he the idea of helping humans, but if they were ever going to defeat this demon, they needed to cooperate.

"But first, I need to infuse and build up my essence." Mazmuth took a deep breath, then closed his eyes with a sharp exhale. Despite not recovering his full strength after being sealed away from many years, he gave out his essence to the humans in the hopes of them standing a chance against Zogratis.

Now, he needed to build back his lost essence.

With a nod of affirmation, Rai glanced at Hiro and the rest of the hunters and they understood immediately, they needed to buy time for Mazmuth.

"Let’s go." Hiro ordered, and they all got to their feet, trying their best to fight off the fear that tried to devour them.

[Skill (Bloodlust Of The Assassin) has been activated]

A notification popped up in the HUD window in front of Rai, as it stood, there was no telling what level of power Zogratis had reached so it was better to be safe than sorry.

As he approached Zogratis, he stretched out his right palm, and subconsciously built up the Electric Burst. "Soul-Technique: Electric Burst!"

SWOOSH!

Like a gust of wind, Zogratis vanished from Rai’s sight.

"Teleportation!? No! That’s not it!" Kazuki tried to decipher his ability, but Zogratis moved so fast that not even the bloodlust of the assassin skill could keep up. To Rai, he was merely a streak of red.

Rai’s face shifted through a storm of emotions ranging from shock, dread, and above all, fear. His eyes widened as he felt an overwhelming presence swallowing him whole.

"Is that the best you can offer human? I guess my concerns were nothing but exaggerations."

"AAAAH!" Rai cried out in pain as a crushing force slammed into his stomach. The impact hurled him through the air, the wind tearing past him while shockwaves burst out in every direction.

"Rai!" Tsk you bastard!" Hiro shouted as he and Elene charged straight at the demon.

"Oh? that’s right, those creatures are still around." Remembering the humans that still lingered, Zogratis let out a heavy sigh, annoyed by the stubborn persistence of their kind.

As Elene and Hiro appeared behind Zogratis, Hiro poured Soul-Energy into his legs and swung a swift roundhouse kick at the demon’s head, while Elene unleashed her Psychic Wave, driving it forward to pierce through the demon’s hardened body.

"Don’t make me laugh." Zogratis spoke softly, and in an instant everything within five meters, including the two, erupted in flames. Their screams filled the air as the fire burned deep into their skin. Without pause, he thrust his palms forward and drove them hard into their abdomens.

They spat out blood from their mouths as they were hurled backward, cutting through the air with violent speed. The sheer force of the impact blew out the flames still clinging to their bodies. Moments later, they slammed into the ground, lying unconscious, their bodies unable to withstand the crushing power that had overwhelmed them.

"Two down." Zogratis spoke softly as his gaze shifted to Xander, who had only just managed to stand after struggling to recover from his last attack.

After Xander saw the aftermath of what Zogratis had done, his eyes went wide with horror as he saw Hiro and Elene unconscious on the ground. "You Bastard!"

Xander stretched his hands forward, then infused all the Primordial Earth essence he had into his prominence wave. He intended to end it all with one blow, but just as quickly as he moved, he froze. The prominence wave flickered and faded from his palm, and in the next instant, everything around him was swallowed by complete darkness.

"What is this?" He asked calmly.

As he peered into the darkness that surrounded him, two massive crimson eyes glared back. Whatever it was, it erased all the essence he had received from the Primordial Earth Essen-Beast when he had formed the Raisen.

"W-What is that..." Xander’s voice trembled with fear.

The bright glowing eyes squinted, almost like it was furious with him.

"You dare receive aid from another? Unacceptable."

Almost immediately, the darkness disappeared, and everything returned back to normal.

"W-What was that..." Xander raised his palm to his face. He didn’t know how to describe it.

Taking advantage of the situation, Zogratis appeared in front of him in a blur, so fast it seemed like teleportation. His hand clamped tightly around Xander’s neck before he could react. Xander gasped sharply, struggling for breath as the demon’s grip crushed off his air.

He drove his right hand deep into his abdomen, and his body trembled from the sudden shock. His eyes widened for a brief moment before slowly shutting, with blood trickling from his mouth and the large wound in his midsection as he slipped into unconsciousness.

"That’s three." The demon lieutenant spoke coldly as he flung Xander toward the ground. Then, without hesitation, he turned his focus back to the main problem, Rai.

Rai struggled to get to his feet, and Zogratis stared at him, a bit annoyed at his persistence. "You’re persistent for a human, however, I can fix that." He raised his hand towards Rai, and began building up a large torrent of energy.

But before he could release it, Mazmuth’s eyes snapped open.

"Alright." Mazmuth opened his mouth wide, and a spiraling ball of emerald energy began to form, glowing brightly as it hovered just above his jaws. With each passing second it swelled larger and larger, spinning with fierce intensity, until its size towered over the battlefield, growing so vast it grew bigger than the temple itself.

"Primordial Beast Bomb!" Mazmuth fired off the spiralling ball of energy at Zogratis, it looked and felt like a meteor crashing down upon him.

"This is nothing, don’t mock me! You hideous beast!" Zogratis stretched out his hands and he activated his technique, Overrule. As the energy of overrule clashed with the Primordial beast bomb, it became a battle of strength. Zogratis gritted his teeth, veins bulging from every corner of his demon skin as he tried his best to dispell the beast’s bomb.

"Now! Kid!"

Taking advantage of the distraction, Rai stretched out his palm once again, and he built up a dark ball of energy in his hand. "This time... I’ll finish you off for good." He poured all the essence Mazmuth had given him into the Raisen, and it swelled, crackling with power as it grew larger and more savage in nature.

Rai dashed forward, but like Xander, just as quickly as he moved, he froze. The Electric Burst flickered and faded from his palm, and in the next instant, everything around him was swallowed by complete darkness.

"Huh?"

Much like Xander, he stared into the darkness that surrounded him, and two yellow glowing eyes stared right back at him.

"W-who are you?" Rai’s voice trembled with fear as he called out, trying to make sense of what he was seeing.

It didn’t say anything, it just only glared back.

Then, almost immediately, the darkness disappeared, and everything returned back to normal.

’What was that just now?’ Rai thought as he raised his right hand to his eye, at first trying to see more clearly. But it was far too real to believe it was just a trick of the mind.

Then suddenly, it all came back to him.

Those pair of eyes, he had seen it somewhere, the eyes that could only be found in the darkness, the darkness that he embraced in other to defeat the A-Tier Soul-Beast.

It was the same eyes he saw when the system had summoned the dragon.

"No way... Was that... The shadow dragon?"

There was no doubt about it, he couldn’t mistake those eyes that peered into his soul the first time he met it. But there was a problem, the dragon was a shadow summon, so why could he see it in what seemed like within him?

"Impossible..." As eyes widened as he realized, that what he saw wasn’t just the eyes of the dragon, it was his core.

The Shadow Soul-Core within him, was alive.
