Chapter 286: An Intruder

Serena’s eyes snapped open in the darkness. A chilling sensation ran down her spine—someone was here, inside the house. She could feel it, an unshakable certainty settling in her gut. Holding her breath, she remained still, her body tense as she listened, straining to catch even the faintest sound. The silence was thick, oppressive, but she knew better than to trust it.

Then, without warning, a hand clamped over her mouth.

Her eyes widened in shock. How was this possible? She hadn’t heard a single sound, no footsteps, no creak of a door—nothing. And yet, someone had reached her. How was that possible? She was no light sleeper who would easily let their guard down. Her body tensed. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Serena’s breath hitched as the rough palm pressed firmly against her mouth. Her heart pounded, each beat loud in her ears. Before she could react, a low voice murmured near her ear, steady and unhurried.

"Are you going to try and break my hand, or do something else?"

The familiar voice made her freeze. Recognition settled in, as she unconsciously relaxed. This intruder was definitely not here to kill. Without hesitation, she moved.

In one swift motion, she flipped over, knocking his hand away as she straddled him, pinning his wrists down against the mattress. The moonlight filtering through the curtains cast faint shadows over his face, but she didn’t need to see him clearly to know who he was.

"Why are you here?" she demanded with a hiss.

He didn’t struggle beneath her grip. Instead, he smiled—slow, deliberately. His dark eyes gleamed with something unreadable.

"I came for an answer to my question," he said simply.

Serena frowned. "What question?"

His fingers flexed under her hold, but he made no move to push her off.

"Do you really believe I would try to kill you?"

A flicker of emotion crossed her face, but she masked it quickly. Her grip on his wrists tightened.

"Yes," she said, her voice unwavering. "I do believe you could kill someone."

Aiden chuckled then and exhaled slowly," Hmm. I can kill someone. But that is not my question. Do you think that I can harm- You. Specifically you."

Serena shrugged, even as she let herself relax sitting on his stomach. "I don’t know for sure, Aiden Hawk. I don’t know you." Her voice was even, but there was a sharp edge to it. "All I do know is that you married me when I was in a vegetative state. Then, when I woke up, we got divorced. And now, somehow, we were set to marry again. That doesn’t exactly scream undying love to me."

Aiden let out a low chuckle, the sound deep and unbothered. "Really?" he mused, tilting his head slightly as he studied her. "I fell in love with you at first sight. Fell so hard that I married you even knowing you were almost brain-dead. I divorced you because that was what you needed, when I could have refused and made things difficult for you. And as for us being set to marry again?" He smirked, his fingers flexing slightly beneath her grip. "Hello? We are in love. So tell me, Serena—if that’s not love, then what is?"

She narrowed her eyes, considering his words as she let go of his hands. There was an arrogance in his tone, but there was also a challenge hidden beneath it. She wanted to scoff, to argue. And that was interesting too. It almost felt like it would be fun to argue with him and goad him.

For a moment, she actually pondered his statement, letting it turn over in her mind. Maybe there was some twisted logic to it. Maybe—

Her thoughts abruptly cut off as she felt something stir beneath her, pressing against her bu**, something that hadn’t been there a moment ago.

Her entire body stiffened, realization hitting her like a bolt of lightning. Oh.

Aiden smirked. "Something wrong?" he asked, voice far too amused.

She moved to get off then but before she could he reacted, sitting up as he moved to hold her in place. "What is the hurry? You were sitting quite comfortably."

Serena narrowed her eyes as she pointed at him," You are a perver*!"

He nodded," Hmm. You’ve said so in the past as well."

Serena nodded her head," Then I know for sure you are that! Aren’t you ashamed?"

Aiden’s smirk widened. "Why would I? I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of." His hands settled on her waist, holding her in place as if daring her to test him. "I’m only like that with you. Besides, you’re the one sitting on me, Serena. Makes me wonder who the real pervert is here."

Serena scoffed, rolled her eyes, but a slow smirk of her own tugged at the corners of her lips. If he wanted to play, then fine—she’d play. Leaning in slightly, she let her fingers trail up his chest, slow and deliberate, nails barely scraping against the fabric of his shirt.

"Maybe I am," she murmured. She let her lips hover near his ear, her breath warm against his skin. "Maybe I just wanted to see how far you’d go."

For the first time, Aiden’s cocky expression faltered. His grip on her tightened, fingers twitching against her waist. His breath hitched—so slight that someone else might not have noticed, but Serena did. And she savored the moment.

But then, as if deciding something, he lifted a hand, brushing his knuckles against her cheek. His gaze dipped to her lips, and just as he moved to close the distance—

A flash of silver caught Serena’s eye as the light from the window reflected off his ring.

The warmth in her stomach turned cold.

She shoved him back, hard enough that he fell back against the mattress again. Aiden barely had time to blink before she was pointing an accusing finger at him, her expression sharp and unyielding.

"You’re married." Her voice was quiet but firm, each word weighted with accusation. "Why the hell are you trying to seduce me, then?"
