Chapter 149: 149. Positive

Henry’s POV

"No, I didn’t mean to..." Sebastian replied, looking ahead and meeting Red Hair’s gaze.

"And she isn’t... she isn’t my lover."

Valeria seemed to dislike what she heard.

"You attack me, but now you claim there is nothing between us?" Her voice was too shrill for my taste.

"Some people are sleeping; be quiet." I pulled Baggy Jeans by his hair up, and after letting go, I looked at him in contemplation.

"What are we going to do with you? Shouldn’t the older guy look after you?"

"What?" Sebastian asked, clutching his scalp.

I heard footsteps and turned to the door again, but it wasn’t Kenny. I know how his steps sound.

Glasses Guy passed the door before looking inside in surprise.

"What’s going on?"

"The attack from the shadow seemed to have left side effects on Sebastian; he tried to harm her." I pointed at Red Hair.

"What attack? No, I don’t remember being attacked." Baggy Jeans just had to interfere with my lies.

"You were attacked yesterday—"

"No, that’s not true; I just suddenly had strange memories..." Sebastian interrupted, looking as if he were in pain merely by recalling that moment.

"Memories?" Valeria asked as her suspicious gaze wandered to me.

What a mess. If this takes any longer and Kenny wakes up, he would feel responsible to take care of all this.

"Yes, we call that an attack nevertheless. Apparently, a memory transfer can happen. I know it’s not pleasant, but since we can’t stop it, what use is there in talking about it?"

"You." I motioned to Glasses Guy with my chin.

"Take care of him, and if he attacks someone again, then confine him somewhere."

"No. You know exactly what is going on here, and now is the time to tell us." He pushed his glasses up.

"Or what?" I smiled.

"What exactly are you going to do to me? We will bring you out alive, and you will get fed anyway. We have no further responsibility for either of you."

"If we know the problem, we can brace ourselves." He remained stubborn, and I realized that this would play out for a long time if I didn’t come up with something.

"You are right... I will tell you." I faked a deep sigh.

"If a shadow or a monster dies and its soul disperses, memories that linger in the air can be absorbed by a few special individuals. We don’t know why, but we do know that it is only temporary." Not true, but it sounds good enough.

"Please take care of him; he isn’t really dangerous, though. Should he show unusual behavior unexpectedly, please come to me, and we can think of a solution, alright?" I raised my eyebrows cordially and turned my chilling smiled as friendly as I could.

"Then... we are special?" Red Hair asked, looking at her hands.

"Yes. Your average person wouldn’t be able to read these soul fragments." Looking at her expression, it seemed my approach was the right one for her.

Baggy Jeans scratched his head and nodded, while Glasses Guy appeared to be deep in thought, mostly relieved to be the ’average’ person rather than disappointed.

"If it’s like this, shouldn’t we stay away when you are killing the shadows?"

"They can’t," Sebastian interrupted.

"The compass from the guy with red eyes shows who is likely to be attacked next. If we go somewhere else, they can’t save us... right?" He looked at me, unsure.

"Exactly." I nodded.

Glasses Guy nodded hesitantly.

"Alright."

Now that the crisis was over, I left them and went into Kenny’s room.

Thinking I would find him sleeping soundly like before, I was stunned to see that he seemed caught in a nightmare. At the latest now, I had to wake him up.

I walked to the mattress and kneeled by his side. A chilling grin was on his face while his body twitched as if trying to wake up.

"Kenny," I said soothingly.

"Kenny, wake up." I combed through his hair and got closer.

"Kenny." Stroking his forehead, he finally snapped his eyes open, his face contorting as if in a fight.

He breathed laboriously and covered his face with his arm.

"Fuck. Fuck. Fuck." Like a mantra, he cursed.

"Nightmare?" I asked, my hand once more combing through his hair. It didn’t feel soft like a girl’s hair, but thick and healthy. When his hair was short, it was slightly curly, but since he let it grow longer than just a few centimeters, it had become straight.

Everything about him seemed healthy, strong, and normal until one took a closer look. So incredibly healthy and strong, yet always just one step away from slipping into a crazed laughing fit or a threatening episode of paranoia—not that he lacked good reason after all he had experienced.

So utterly normal, yet there was a hidden ability within him that defied the gods, coupled with his bright red eyes and painful past.

"Ever been devoured by a giant?" He asked, allowing my touch, or at least not noticing it.

"Not that I remember, and I surely would. Was it the one you had seen in your vision?" The moment he had told me about the giant, I felt real dread. We had already decided to stay in this parallel world because we thought of the shadows as a threat. What exactly were we about to do if this thing was really able to cross? Yet, looking into his bright red eyes and his smile, I was convinced that we would find a way. So convinced that everything I told him was the absolute truth.

Too big? Cut it. Too strong? Crush it. Too dangerous? Kill it.

Additionally, Kenny had already proven the impossible to be possible. If it is him, he would surely find a way.

"Yeah. It was so real that I would say it is a premonition, rather than a nightmare."

I lay down on the mattress as well and turned to my side, my arm outstretched so I could twirl a strand of his hair with my finger.

"If it is a premonition, there has to be a solution, or a warning wouldn’t be necessary."

He uncovered his face and turned to me.

"Why are you so fucking positive? Where does this belief that we can tackle everything in our way come from?"

"Is it really so strange for a dog to believe in his master?" I asked.

He visibly cringed, and I laughed.

"If there is a giant, there should be a power on our side as well. I don’t think that thing can just march into our world and destroy everything; there has to be some balance on both sides."

"Yeah." Kenny looked at the ceiling and didn’t seem convinced, not the least.

"When exactly does my counterpart arrive, Kenny?" I released his hair and placed my hand above his face. He swatted it away but still held onto it to look into the future.

"How long did I sleep?" He asked as he returned. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Far too long," I sighed. If I hadn’t known from his grandma that he needed the rest and would wake up on his own, I would have long since woken him.

"Get ready; it will be soon."
