Chapter 64: Using two Low Soul Shards

Soft sunlight fell on the lake, turning it into a blue mirror. Nearby, the water from the waterfall splashed and roared, and next to it — on the emerald grass — sat Lin, meditating with his katana, breathing quietly and focusing all his attention on it.

Suddenly, he slowly opened his eyes and looked at his katana, slightly smiling.

"Contact is getting closer and closer... I feel that if I continue training with the blade like this, then in a week or two, I should be able to make Contact with it... That’s certainly encouraging."

Lin stood up from his spot and slowly closed his eyes. He took a small step forward and swung his katana diagonally — from bottom to top!

Whoosh!

But Lin didn’t stop there — he stepped forward with his other foot and slashed the blade downward!

Whoosh!

The wind parted, and Lin continued to move gracefully with the blade, as if dancing with a partner. His movements were calm, and each strike carried within it months of training.

Whoosh!

He lunged forward with the katana, then suddenly spun his body in a full circle, making a crescent-shaped slash!

Whoosh!

Every movement was perfected to the extreme, demonstrating clean and beautiful swings that could only be achieved through decades of effort.

But Lin had achieved it in three months.

Was Lin a genius?

No.

Because even back during the battles in Ilan, Lin had tirelessly trained with various types of weapons. He needed to learn every weapon and determine which suited him best. And out of all of them, only the two-handed sword allowed him to achieve Contact.

With more experience in weaponry than an average person, and thanks to his determination and desire to improve, he managed to achieve such results with the katana in just three months.

If he hadn’t had all that, he suspected it would’ve taken him several years to reach his current progress.

"This is already good... But still not enough to scare even one of the Five Families. Aside from swordsmanship, I also need to think about my skill and leveling it up," Lin stopped the dance with his blade and sat down on the ground, pulling two purple crystals from his brown robe.

These were Low Soul Shards he had managed to obtain.

"Two of them — that’s not bad. To level the skill to the second level, I need — five Low Soul Shards. I’ve already used two, and now I have two more... That leaves just one more crystal, and I can upgrade the skill to level two."

Lin smiled and first brought one Low Soul Shard to his forehead and slowly concentrated. The purple crystal began to glow more brightly, like an expensive lamp, until it started to dim and shrink in size. frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

Soon, it completely vanished from Lin’s hand and was absorbed by the Title System, sending the crystal’s special energy to the skill: "Slow Motion Perception".

Lin immediately willed it, and a blue window appeared before his eyes:

He smiled slightly and repeated the same with the other Low Soul Shard.

He brought it to his forehead and focused. The crystal began to glow, and after about ten seconds of steady shining, it began to fade and shrink.

A few seconds later, it completely disappeared, and the special energy was absorbed by the Title System, specifically into the skill.

Lin laughed and couldn’t hide his joy.

"Just one more Low Soul Shard, and I’ll upgrade the skill to level two!"

...

A week had passed since Aran and Lin met Royal, and two weeks since the day they first entered the Magic World through the Gate.

The group of three continued forward as planned. They encountered nothing particularly unusual on their way aside from countless Distorted creatures that they had to kill!

If the group had a special counter that showed the total number of Distorted creatures killed, it would’ve read about 30-40!

But even with that many monsters slain, the loot they managed to obtain was minimal!

So minimal that they even created a ranking list to show who got what:

In first place was Royal, who managed to get two Low Soul Shards from six monkeys. In second was Lin, who had killed four monkeys and obtained one Beast Chest and one Low Soul Shard. And in third was Aran, who got one Low Soul Shard after killing two large beetles.

That was all the reward they had received!

It was pathetically little!

Perhaps for Aran and Royal, the items they had obtained weren’t particularly important, but for Lin, each Low Soul Shard was as precious as a diamond!

That’s what bothered him most.

He sighed.

"Whatever the case, I still have time to try and farm one more Low Soul Shard."

Beside him, Aran looked at the sky and asked, together with Royal:

"We’re in the deep parts of the Dead Lands. Are there really no interesting ancient structures from this world’s past here?"

Royal looked around as well, but saw only the endless green forest. He shook his head.

"Definitely nothing near us. But within the Dead Lands, such places must exist — we just haven’t found them yet. Besides, they’re very dangerous and can hold not only valuable knowledge and Distorted items, but also — Distorted creatures of Monster level or higher."

"After all, the Dead Lands are not a place just anyone would dare venture into. And not because Distorted creatures are everywhere — but because some of them are at the Monster level or above."

Aran laughed.

"Ha-ha-ha. That’s for sure. An Awakened one can handle a Distorted creature of Beast level, but for a Monster — you’ve got to be well-prepared and definitely need a companion to back you up."

"Luckily, we haven’t encountered a single Distorted creature of Monster level yet, though I wouldn’t mind fighting one — with you guys on my side."

Lin sighed and said:

"After your words, a Monster-level Distorted creature is bound to appear on our path..."

"Then wouldn’t it be great if an ancient structure appeared too!" Aran instantly responded to Lin.

The group continued walking, chatting, until they saw fresh blood on their path.

Royal crouched down and examined the blood on the green grass.

"Very recent — and most likely human."

"So there were people here? Interesting. Who could they be? From our academy or some research group?" Aran immediately asked.

Lin looked into the forest, trying to spot something there.

The forest was normal: nothing strange enough to draw the eye. But a growing sense of unease began to rapidly rise in Lin’s heart!

"Something’s going to happen..."

"Looks like something’s about to happen to us," Lin quickly warned everyone.

Royal and Aran nodded.

"I feel it too — like someone’s watching us... Interesting," Aran smiled.

Royal drew his golden two-handed sword and swung it to the side.

Whoosh!

"Prepare for battle!"

Lin slowly drew his katana from its sheath, while Aran shrugged and readied his legs and arms for the upcoming fight!

Suddenly, heavy footsteps were heard, and the ground began to vibrate!

"Something’s running!" Royal looked ahead.

Bang!

Several trees were instantly smashed apart, revealing to the trio a strange Distorted creature!
