Chapter 40: Morning Plan

A day later, in the morning, Adrian slept in one of the command center’s bedrooms which was usually reserved for high-ranking personnel. His eyes fluttered open as the faint hum of the base filtered through the walls.

He stayed still for a second, staring at the ceiling.

Adrian turned his head slightly.

The digital clock on the bedside table read 0600.

He pushed himself up and swung his legs over the side of the bed. He walked toward the bathroom and pushed the door open with his shoulder.

The tiles were clean. The mirror was clear. The place looked like it had been sealed off from everything outside.

He turned the knob.

Water came out right away with a strong pressure.

He adjusted it until the heat settled, then stepped under the stream without hesitation. The water hit his shoulders and ran down his back, washing off the sweat and dirt that had dried into his skin from the day before.

He stood there for a moment, letting the heat loosen his muscles.

Then he reached for the soap and scrubbed down, quick and methodical. No wasted motion. No pause longer than needed.

A few minutes later, he shut the water off.

Silence returned.

He grabbed a towel, dried himself, then stepped back into the bedroom with it wrapped around his waist.

Then he opened his system’s inventory where he’ll grab his uniform. He had discovered when putting clothing inside the inventory and picked it out, it’ll get clean. Basically, dry cleaning.

Maybe it only works for clothes.

He wore it piece by piece, starting with the undershirt before pulling the uniform top over his shoulders. The fabric settled into place, clean and firm against his skin. No stains. No smell. Like it had never been used.

He stepped into the combat pants and pulled them up, tightening the belt until it locked in place.

Adrian moved toward the chair and picked up his boots.

He sat down and laced them tight, pulling each side until there was no slack left. He pressed his heel down once against the floor, checking the hold, then stood up.

After that, he proceeded to the command center planning room where Ryan was already waiting.

"Good morning sir, please have some breakfast. We have can of sardines and a coffee, courtesy of the cook," Ryan said as he set the tray down on the table.

A metal cup sat beside the can, steam still rising from the coffee. The sardines had already been opened, the oil pooled slightly along the edges.

Adrian pulled out a chair and sat.

"Thanks."

Ryan gave a short nod and stepped aside, tablet still in his hand.

Adrian took the fork, ate without pause, then reached for the coffee. It was hot, bitter, and strong. He didn’t react, just took another sip and set it down.

"Team ready?" he asked.

"Almost," Ryan replied. "They’re in the armory finishing checks."

Adrian nodded once and kept eating.

Ryan tapped on the tablet and brought up a map on the screen mounted on the wall.

"We are hitting a supermarket called Big Save Supermarket. It’s a three-storey commercial building with an open parking area in front and a loading bay at the rear," Ryan continued as the map zoomed in.

"The distance from the base is three kilometers. Close enough for quick turnaround. If we transport all of its supplies to this base, we’ll have enough for a year."

Adrian kept eating, eyes on the screen.

Ryan tapped again and a UAV feed appeared beside the map.

"We ran a sweep fifteen minutes ago. Thermal picked up multiple clusters inside and around the structure."

The feed showed scattered heat signatures moving through the building.

"Estimated count?" Adrian asked.

Ryan swiped to another overlay.

"Low hundreds," he said. "Spread across all three levels. Highest concentration on the ground floor and near the entrance."

"So what is our plan on getting there?"

"We’ll use MRAPs for the transport of troops and FMTV for hauling out the supplies," Ryan said as he switched the display to a route overlay.

A line traced from the base to the supermarket.

"Primary route follows the main road. Straight shot, fastest way in. Roads are clear based on UAV sweep, but there are abandoned vehicles scattered along the sides." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

He tapped again.

"Alternate route cuts through a side street here," he added, highlighting a narrower path. "Less exposure, but tighter turns. Not ideal for the FMTV if we need to move fast."

Adrian finished the last of his coffee and set the cup down.

"We take the main road," he said. "Speed over caution on approach."

Ryan nodded. "Copy."

"Also, I want to deal with those zombies first before we arrive, so that when we arrive there, there’ll be plenty of zombies which can be dealt with more easily than having all the zombies in the area swarm around us."

"We can send the Warthog to the area and lay waste around the objective, its primary weapon is loud enough to lure out all the zombies within the area."

"Well in that case send it. I summoned them for a reason so we should use it," Adrian said.

Ryan nodded once and brought his radio up.

"Comms, this is Ryan. Prepare Warthog for tasking," he said

A short burst of static came back, then a reply.

"Copy, we’ll inform the pilot of the Warthog. Will update once fully set, over."

"You really should come up with a callsign," Adrian said, chuckling.

"Yes sir, I think we need to organize our organization so that it can be operated smoothly."

"We’ll do it once we finish the job, for now, let’s get ourselves some food from the supermarket."

"Very well."

With that, Adrian contemplated for a moment. Ryan’s suggestion of organizing their militia was not bad considering they are getting larger. And with his points still not spent for spinning the gacha, there is a possibility it could grow even bigger than their current numbers.

And since he had also told the civilians, specifically, Marco, that they are a private militia, there must be a name as well.

Well, he has a lot of time in his hands to come up with a name. For now, he’ll watch some Warthogs.
