Chapter 87: Chapter 87 - Space Battle

"What?" Zion said, sitting up straight immediately.

[I’m detecting two spaceships on our radar,] Uriel said again. [One of a similar grade as ours and one transport ship.]

Zion ripped the cable out of his arm and jumped out of bed. "Do you know if they are enemies?"

[Unconfirmed,] Uriel replied. [I’m trying to get into contact with them now.]

Nodding once, he left his room and darted toward the control room.

"End Koru’s education programs," he said. "And make sure he comes to the control room."

[Affirmative.]

Zion sat down in the control room and strapped himself in, prepared for the worst.

A holographic map immediately popped up beside him, a blue dot in the center to signify their ship and two red dots on the outer edge.

’They seem to be slightly faster than us,’ he thought, tapping on the screen.

[Host, they responded back... and it’s not good news,] Uriel suddenly said. [They are a scavenger crew and they’re asking us to surrender ourselves.]

Zion’s expression darkened slightly. "A scavenger crew?"

At the very least, they weren’t related to the people stalking them, but still, this news wasn’t something he was happy about.

[What do you wish to do?] Uriel asked, voice low.

"Deny their request," he said, gripping his seat tightly. "And if they try to attack us... we’ll just have to crush them."

He paused. "You can do that much, right?"

[Of course,] Uriel replied firmly.

Just then, Koru burst through the doors, a confused look on his face.

"What’s happening?" he asked, tilting his head.

"Sit down and strap in," Zion replied, focused on the map. "There are enemies behind us, and the ride might get bumpy."

Koru frowned for a second.

Then his eyes widened, speeding to his chair and strapping himself in tightly.

"Do I need to do anything?" he asked, glancing around.

Zion shook his head.

"No need," he said. "It should be alright."

Not even a second later, Uriel’s voice rang out in his head again.

[They did not respond well to our message,] the AI called out, voice cold. [Their ships have sped up toward us.]

’Alright,’ Zion thought, narrowing his eyes. ’Flip the ship around just before we get into their range.’

[Affirmative.]

Zion moved quickly at the same time, pulling up several more holograms to observe the situation more closely.

"Keep our ship’s speed and burst acceleration at eighty percent of its maximum for now," he commanded. "That way we can surprise them later on."

Uriel remained quiet but quickly adjusted the ship’s capabilities.

Within minutes, the scavenger crew’s ships closed in on their tail and shot the first bullets toward them.

"Flip it now," Zion called out, staring at the screen.

The very next second, the thrusters under the ship roared to life, tilting the nose up rapidly until they were completely upside down.

Koru and Zion held on tightly, dozens of bullets exploding where they’d been a moment earlier.

The shockwave washed over their ship, shaking it violently while Uriel used the thrusters to roll the ship over.

"Shoot back!" Zion called out, the scavenger ships now fully in their vision.

Uriel fired back immediately, the ship staggering as dozens of metal slugs tore through space straight toward the enemies.

Both scavenger ships split up in different directions, raising their shields simultaneously to block several shots.

"That transport ship isn’t simple either," Zion said, zooming in on the hologram. "They seem to have several modifications, like Ravel had on his."

[The lance-class ship also has several combat modifications,] Uriel added, voice firm. [Our ship is slightly outclassed and outnumbered.]

Zion clenched his fists. "Then how can we win?"

Uriel remained silent for a moment.

[Their ships are steered by humans,] it said. [They can’t do everything at once.]

Zion fell silent, watching their ship maneuver and shoot comfortably at the same time.

’That’s right,’ he thought, observing the holograms closely as the ship shook and turned.

The lance-class ship was mainly running evasive maneuvers, only occasionally firing back. But the transport ship was continuously firing at them from a longer distance.

He wanted to suggest going for the transport ship first, but decided to wait and see what Uriel was doing.

’It seems like he’s waiting for them to make a mistake,’ Zion thought.

It didn’t take long before the lance-class ship continued heading in the same direction for too long.

Uriel immediately noticed the transport ship failing to keep up and spun the ship around.

As he came face to face with the transport ship, he accelerated, concentrating all of its firepower on one spot.

"That’s it," Zion said, a wide grin on his face. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The concentrated fire pierced a hole through the barrier within seconds.

At that point, nothing could be done for the opponents anymore.

Two heavy shells penetrated the front of their ship and exploded inside, sending debris everywhere as it was obliterated.

[That’s one,] Uriel said, immediately spinning the ship back around again. [The next one won’t take that long.]

Zion let out a breath, his shoulders relaxing for a moment.

The lance-class scavenger ship drifted far away in front of them, only just having completed its turn.

This time, however, it didn’t seem to be charging toward them.

’What are they doing?’ Zion wondered, narrowing his eyes.

A faint blue glow spread around the scavenger ship, its energy barrier becoming visible from the sheer amount of power being poured into it.

[They are charging a railgun-like weapon,] Uriel announced as the ship shot forward at a rapid pace.

’A railgun?’ Zion thought, eyes wide.

Just underneath the scavenger’s ship, another faint light started to glow brighter and brighter.

[Don’t worry,] Uriel said, voice low. [I’ll beat them to it before they get to charge it fully.]

At the same time, Uriel activated every single weapon system on the ship, all aimed straight at the scavenger vessel.

Zion’s eyes locked onto the rapidly brightening glow underneath the enemy ship, his face draining of color.

’I hope you’re right,’ he thought, gripping the armrests tightly.
