Chapter 129: Exhaling

Hearing Lucas’ simple and clear explanation, the worry in the three young men’s eyes visibly lessens. Especially Julian. He yawns.

"Then, I guess I’ll sleep too. I’m very sleepy." He says drowsily, closes his eyes, and falls asleep almost immediately.

Lucas frowns. "Does he normally fall asleep this easily?" He asks the room.

"No, not this fast." Leila answers.

Lucas goes to Julian and checks him. He finds Julian is in the exact same state as Maeve. His brows shoot up.

"How is this possible? I’ve seen people fall asleep quickly because of exhaustion, but their conditions were not like this." He murmurs.

"Like what, Luke?" Arthur asks. He can feel sleep creeping up on him too, but he wants to hear what Lucas thinks.

"It’s nothing to be alarmed about. It’s just... not only did they fall asleep extremely fast, they also went straight into NREM stage three, also known as deep sleep." Lucas explains.

"This is the best stage for the body to rest and heal itself. In this stage, people are hardest to wake. That’s normal. But... not this hard."

He frowns, clearly puzzled.

"It’s like their bodies are actively preventing them from waking up, to ensure the best possible rest. How?"

"Hm... good to hear." Arthur murmurs.

He slowly closes his eyes, and the next second, he’s sound asleep.

Liam doesn’t fall behind him by much.

The whole team is sound asleep.

Lucas looks around the room. "This is amazing. Even more so because it’s not random. I mean, they all have the exact same sleeping condition. What are the odds of that?"

------------------------------

The sleeping condition that amazes Lucas is not exclusive to the four people at the hospital. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Theo is currently in deep sleep as well.

He has always fallen into this state every time he uses his magic. It was the same after the Beachwalk dungeon.

He even had a fever after that dungeon for pushing his body past its limits. Since then, he has trained his stamina and improved a lot, but it is still far from Liam’s or Arthur’s. Even Maeve has better stamina than Theo.

This sleeping condition is actually very common for new magi who have just started learning magic. The body processes mana for the first time and needs to recalibrate itself.

It will continue as the team learns magic and keeps using mana like it’s their last day on earth. It forces their bodies to adjust quickly, until they become optimal for mana usage.

This is especially useful for Theo, who has the worst stamina among the five of them.

If he keeps using mana and pushing his body to its limits, the mana will work together with his body to recalibrate it and improve his stamina significantly.

However, as an Archmage, Theo had never come to this conclusion. There was no such knowledge in Caelthorn, simply because mages there were trained from a very young age. Their bodies had already adapted long before they were old enough to question it.

Theo is lucky that his parents are currently at the hospital. If they were here and saw Theo in the same condition as the team, they would definitely grow suspicious.

The five of them continue to sleep for the next forty-eight hours.

"Chief Stille, are you sure about this?" Reporter Kwan asks again, seeking confirmation. Chief Stille’s assistant had contacted her earlier, claiming he had a good scoop.

Jessica Kwan needs a good story. She needs it badly. She wants that news anchor position, the one that would put her face in front of the entire country of Concordia.

And if what Chief Stille is telling her is true, this might be the big break she’s been waiting for.

Chief Stille watches the sparkle in Reporter Kwan’s eyes and finds himself captivated. He likes his women young, perky, with eyes full of ambition.

What he has with the Baroness is strictly business. But Reporter Kwan... she is far more to his taste.

His thoughts drift, imagining her in his bed, reacting to his touch.

Chief Stille unconsciously wets his lower lip and swallows.

"Yes," he replies, his voice slightly breathy. "I’m certain. They don’t care about the missing people. They only care about themselves. Both are powerful families. People like them don’t concern themselves with common folk."

Reporter Kwan nods. "If that’s true, I’ll need evidence to support this claim. I’ll investigate it on my own." She packs up her things and is about to leave. "Thank you, Chief Stille, for the scoop. I’ll make sure it doesn’t go to waste."

"Wait." Chief Stille grabs her wrist.

She turns to look at him, head tilting slightly, waiting.

"That’s... that’s it?" Chief Stille hesitates. "I mean..."

"Well... yes, Chief Stille." Reporter Kwan gently pulls her wrist back. "I still need to do my homework. I can’t just write an article without supporting evidence. That’s not journalism. That’s gossip tabloids. And I don’t write gossip for tabloids."

She says it with such calm dignity that Chief Stille doesn’t know how to respond.

He has no choice but to let her go and watch as she walks away.

"Such an incredible body," he murmurs, already regretting letting her leave.

"You need to rest as well, Lei." Maurice is helping his wife taking of her coat.

"Yeah, I’m tired. After not being to sleep the whole night, and seeing them sleeping so peacefully, I think I’m sleepy to." Leila smiles weakly. She scans around the house.

"It’s unusually quiet." She comments. "I know, I know. It’s just my imagination. Usually the house is this empty. Arthur’s at work, Julian at his lab, and Thea is training."

She seems to remember something, "That’s right, speaking of Thea. I haven’t seen her since yesterday. Where is she?" Leila takes out her phone.

"It’s pass midnight. I guess she must’ve been sleeping already. I’ll just peek. I’m worried if I don’t see her." Leila is already heading towards the guest room on the first floor.

Maurice sighs slowly and follows her.

"She’s sleeping." Leila whispers from the door. She closes it again.

"We should go to bed too. I’m spent." Maurice gently steers Leila away from Thea’s bedroom.

"Yeah, yeah. I said I’m going to bed. Reese! Stop pushing me!" Leila laughs. She is very happy that her world is once again complete again. Everyone is okay, nothing bad is happening.

She couldn’t be happier.
