Chapter 46: Village in the Clovis Kingdom

He hurriedly left the market and headed north at high speed. But what he found was different.

The snow had disappeared, but the trees were still dead. As Sylas flew to the cave where they were hiding, he found nothing in it.

"Shit! They completely left," Sylas explained, annoyed.

Not wanting to lose their tracks, Sylas activated his tracking magic, which had a higher accuracy rate than the tracking magic of the academy elders.

The area was immediately covered with large golden magic runes, able to detect any trace left behind from the magic they used.

"Why can’t I detect them?" asked the old man, annoyed.

He enlarged the range of the tracking magic, trying his best to find them even if it was just a small trace. Still, there was nothing he could do.

The magic aura of Aiden or Aurora was not visibly detected, as if they had already left the place.

Sylas clenched his fists and shouted loudly in anger, he vented his frustration on the cave wall to cause it to collapse.

"Damn you, Aurora. You must have convinced Aiden to leave," Sylas complained, outside the collapsed cave.

"As long as you’re still in Arcanis, then you won’t be able to escape from me!" declared Sylas, looking up at the sky above the valley in all seriousness.

Elsewhere, Aiden sat warily on the back of the Ice Dragon Aurora. Aurora flew above the clouds while implanting a certain magic on her, camouflage.

That way, Sylas wouldn’t be able to realize the existence flying above the clouds. Aurora looked back at Aiden.

"Sylas has come to the valley. He won’t be able to find us," Aurora replied.

"That’s good," Aiden explained.

"Where are we going?" asked Aurora, still flying without direction.

Aiden patted his magic pouch lightly. He took Arcanis’ map and synchronized it with their position.

Currently, they appeared to be in the northwest of Arcanis, close to the border of the Clovis Kingdom. According to Aiden, he and Aurora would have to fly out of Arcanis to reach Clovis.

"Master Sylas probably won’t let me go, and neither will the academy. We’re going to the border of the Clovis Kingdom," Aiden said.

"Clovis, huh? I see," Aurora explained.

Aiden led Aurora to fly in a different direction, not past the checkpoint but across the mountain. That way, no border guards would notice them.

From the map, Aiden and Aurora had completely disappeared from the Arcanis map, a sign that they had entered Clovis territory.

However, so far, none of the border guards had detected their presence. Aiden continued to cast his eyes over the surrounding area, ensuring their safety.

"No one is after us," Aiden replied.

"We’re going to descend from above the clouds," Aiden stated, clearly heard by Aurora.

They flew through the clouds until they could see the vast territory of the Clovis Kingdom. The closest place to them that was populated by humans was a small village with a large agricultural area.

Aurora came down from the sky and landed in the forest area near the village fields. It landed accompanied by a wave of magic and a gust of wind, but it did not attract the villagers’ attention.

Aiden dismounted and stepped slowly forward, peering through the gaps in the trees. There, the villagers seemed focused and undisturbed in their work.

Under the spell of ice magic, Aurora changed her form from an ice dragon to a girl in a long, ice-blue dress.

She fell to her knees while trying to balance herself, Aiden reflexively caught Aurora’s hand and helped her up.

"Are you alright?" asked Aiden, Aurora cleared her throat in reply.

"Using ice elemental magic as a form of camouflage is taking up a lot of magic energy in my body," Aurora replied.

When Aiden tried to get Aurora to take a step, he saw Aurora’s legs struggling to adapt as if temporarily paralyzed.

Having no other choice, Aiden carried Aurora on his back, making the girl blush, but she was pleased with Aiden’s gentle response.

"Thank you, Aiden," Aurora replied.

"No problem. We need to leave the forest as soon as possible before night," Aiden revealed, Aurora nodding in agreement.

Aiden stepped through some trees and large tree roots to get to the end of the forest. He only relied on the glint of light at the end of his eyes, the light must be headed somewhere.

About an hour into their walk, Aiden finally saw the small village. He had the courage to keep going despite his shortness of breath, without stopping to carry Aurora.

From the western horizon, the sun was about to set with its characteristic orange glow. At the very least, Aiden should arrive at the village as soon as possible to rest.

Some villagers saw a young man carrying a woman on his back, walking from the direction of the forest. One of them came over.

"What’s happening? Where did you come from?" asked the old man with a hoe on his shoulder.

Aiden smiled and pointed behind him, saying he was from the village behind the mountain.

"There was a horde of monsters that attacked our village. Some of us decided to run for our lives by climbing the mountain to this place," Aiden replied.

"Hmm... looks like we’re not the only ones who had a similar problem," the old man said, taking pity on Aiden and Aurora.

’So, they’re having trouble with monster hordes, huh? I didn’t expect that,’ Aiden explained.

The old man talked to his friend about Aiden and Aurora’s situation. As fellow humans who had been affected by a terrible calamity, they both seemed to sympathize.

"Come with me. I’ll take you to the village chief’s house," the other man explained, and Aiden smiled and nodded his thanks.

He continued to carry Aurora on his back while following where the man was taking him. They walked along the main street of the village, causing some villagers to pay attention to them.

"Don’t worry about them. Their attitude is so cautious because of the harsh environment that shaped them," the man explained.

"Do those monsters keep attacking you?" Aiden asked.

"The last time was three days ago, seven children were killed by them," the man said.

"Let’s hope there won’t be any attacks tonight so we can rest in peace," he explained.

"Yes, I hope so."

Before long, they finally reached the village chief’s house. An old man with a wooden stick came up to them, asking their names and where they were from.

"I’m Aiden, she’s my sister Aurora. We come from a village in Arcanis, just beyond that mountain," Aiden replied.

The man he was with helped explain to the old man about their situation. Out of empathy, the village chief offered Aiden his small house to stay in for the night.

Aiden nodded, fully grateful for the chief’s humility.

"Hurry up and get some rest before night. I only have one message for you," the old man explained.

"What?" asked Aiden, curious.

"If anyone calls you at night, never open the door."

Aiden swallowed his saliva deeply, the advice sounding like the premise of a horror story.

"I understand."
