Chapter 52: The City of Cain

***

The next day.

After their matters were done in Anveil Village, the two left the border area to go to Cain City. It was one of the 10 major cities in the Clovis Kingdom, ruled by Noble Arnold.

Luckily for Aiden, Aurora flew across the kingdom’s skies undetected by other mages. That made the journey which originally took two days to arrive, lessen to half a day.

From the location detection on Aiden’s digital map, his position was already close enough to the city. Aiden had Aurora land in the forest to make it safe for her to transform.

Aiden took a good look at the surrounding area, there didn’t seem to be anyone watching them. Once the situation was deemed safe, Aurora transformed from an ice dragon into an ice girl.

In a blinding glow of ice-blue light, the ice dragon transformed completely into an ice girl. Even so, her abilities were drastically drained due to the two times of shape transformation.

The young man walked over, hugging her to keep her from falling. Aurora smiled, thanking Aiden.

’She’s always exhausted every time she performs a shape transformation. I don’t think I should keep relying on her during my trips,’ Aiden stated, feeling sorry for Aurora.

Aurora saw the expression on Aiden’s face and asked why Aiden had that expression. Aiden shook his head, having no intention of conveying his anxiety.

"Do you want to rest first?" asked Aiden.

"Is it far?" asked Aurora, innocently.

"If you ask me that...."

Aiden looked ahead, watching the field ahead with its towering walls forming a large fortress. No, they were close to Cain City.

"The way I see it, the city is already close to—"

"Then let’s go. I’m good, Aiden," Aurora interrupted.

After only a few steps forward, Aurora’s legs fell off balance again. Aiden rushed over to her and helped her up.

"Sorry, I think we should rest for a bit, Aiden," Aurora replied.

Aiden heard her first that she wanted to continue the journey. Seeing her look sad when they rested, Aiden couldn’t let it go.

He crouched down in front as he asked Aurora to take his back. Aurora was shocked, refusing gently.

"It’s alright. You took me away, now it’s my turn to do it," Aiden explained.

Their relationship as Beast and Tamer was different from the others. Aiden realized Aurora’s power was both amazing and terrifying, but he didn’t want to offend her.

Aurora had told Aiden once during their time in the snow valley cave that she didn’t want to go to Aiden’s consciousness —the dwelling place of the tamers.

That was because Aurora didn’t want Aiden to think of her as a pet who was always being told what to do and how to do it. She wanted him to think of her as a partner in crime.

For that reason, Aiden always remembered not to tell Aurora to enter his consciousness.

According to him, Aurora always being near him gave a special impression on his journey this time.

Aurora had no choice but to be carried by Aiden. Aiden didn’t mind, after all, Aurora’s body was light and the distance to Cain City wasn’t far.

Once Aurora was on Aiden’s back, the young man stepped out of the forest and arrived at a field. Before him, there was a large fort protecting Cain City.

The gates were always open, with no checks by city soldiers. Everyone had the right to leave and enter the city freely.

Even so, Aiden carrying a beautiful woman on his back was enough to attract people’s attention. Aiden realized it but he chose to ignore it.

Entering through the gate, Aiden saw a more complex, beautiful, and diverse cityscape compared to Byrone. Here, buildings had an average of two floors and a maximum of four.

Merchants opened their stalls and welcomed customers, children ran happily towards the city park, some wearing adventurer suits in squads.

"This is much bigger than Byrone," Aurora said.

"I agree with you."

Aiden’s attention was drawn to an equipment store that sold magic equipment and swords. He came to the shop and saw the owner coming closer.

"Welcome to my shop, do you need anything?" the man asked.

’I don’t have any money, just some magic items. Does he want to buy them?" Aiden asked.

"Did you take the beast essence?" asked Aiden.

"What level?" the man asked.

"Level B."

"Tsk!"

"My shop receives too many B-level beast essences," explained the man, gruffly.

’What the hell with his attitude?" complained Aiden.

"Then that’s fine. I’ll take it to another shop," Aiden stated.

"HAHA!" laughed the shop owner.

The man explained that none of the equipment stores would accept B-level beast essences. The only place that might be willing to buy it was the Adventurer’s Guild.

"Where’s that?" asked Aiden.

The man pointed to a three-story building near the city fountain. Aiden looked over, it was true that the building had the sign for the Adventurer’s Guild.

"Alright."

He said goodbye and left. Aiden took another step away from the shop to reach the front of the building, where adventurers could be seen entering and leaving the place, their clothes were really tacky in Aiden’s opinion.

Aiden stepped inside and saw that it wasn’t very crowded. He wasn’t too familiar with this place, even young Aiden didn’t have any memories of it.

"Welcome to the Adventurer’s Guild office. What happened to her?" asked the female staffer pointing at Aurora.

"She’s exhausted, her legs are cramping," Aiden explained.

"Hmm, you can rest her over there," said the woman, pointing at the adventurers’ lounge.

"How about it?" Aiden asked Aurora.

"I don’t mind as long as you don’t leave me alone for too long," Aurora said.

Aiden sat Aurora down on an empty chair, then went to the reception desk following the staff lady.

The young man took out a B-level beast essence directly to them, asking if they could buy it.

"May I see your adventurer’s card?" the receptionist asked.

"Adventurer’s card?"

"Yes, or maybe you’re not an adventurer?"

Aiden shook his head. The woman began to explain in detail that any form of beast essence could be sold at the Adventurer’s Guild office on the condition that the person must be an adventurer.

"Then what if I register as an adventurer?" asked Aiden.

"Sure, it costs 10 silver for administration," he explained.

’Damn! I really don’t have any money,’ Aiden complained.

The young man tried to find other ways to get the money to register as an adventurer. Suddenly, an adventurer in a navy blue suit arrived and handed over a black pouch full of beast essence.

"Count mine," he replied as he handed over his adventurer card.

Aiden had a way of getting money. He greeted the man and asked him for a favor, the man seemed to be listening.

"I have 69 B-level beast essences and want to trade them, but I don’t have an adventurer’s card," Aiden replied.

"So, you want to use me to get money?" the man asked, and Aiden nodded. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"Yes."

The two looked at each other in a serious gaze. In the end, the man agreed as long as he got half of the total price of 69 level B beast essences.

"The total will be 29 silver and 5 bronze," the receptionist replied.

Quickly, the man took 15 silver from the money on the table. As Aiden turned around, the man left the receptionist’s desk coldly.

"Here’s your money," the woman said.

"Take 10 silver for the administration fee," Aiden said.

"Okay."
