Chapter 18: Sh*t luck

"Here is the plan. I will go in and take out as many zombies as I can while looking out for any potential survivors. Meanwhile, you guys check for any zombies approaching from above or down below, okay?" I said in a low voice as we stood on the stairway to the 19th floor.

There were mainly two reasons why I didn’t let anyone come with me to kill the zombies, despite Martha being fairly useful in this situation given her super strength n all.

First was the fact that I wanted to kill all the zombies by myself to get the experience points. Secondly, I didn’t want to risk anyone becoming a zombie. At least not someone whom I could prevent from becoming one.

Maybe once their power evolves or they get stronger?

Eva felt a little conflicted about me going alone, but when I said that I would return in case there were too many zombies, she seemed relieved and accepted my plan.

I considered the pros and cons for a few more seconds before slowly moving towards the 19th floor, opening the gate and moving into it.

Finding the zombies was easy as they were monotonously standing in a daze a dozen meters away from the exit. There were a few more behind them, and probably more inside the rooms. Though the most important thing was to check for the Lesser D-Grade one before I made any moves.

Found him.

[Zombie: Sharp-Eyed Zombie

HP: 200/200

Description: A zombie whose eyes have started to develop beyond what it normally should see. Depending on the environment, it may evolve into something beyond what is possible.

Type: Lesser D-Grade!]

Nothing too serious.

Just like usual, I moved closer to the zombie and...

-Bam!

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[+50 Exp Recieved!]

...began killing the zombies.

The rest of the zombies, including the Sharp-Eyes one, weren’t much of a problem as they all died in two hits or fewer. I believed as long as their evolution wasn’t defense or speed-focused, it should be easy to kill them.

There were 5 in the hallway, 3 in the waiting room and 5 more in the nursing room. And even though a little slower than before, I killed them all one by one without any misses.

[Quest Complete!]

[+3 Strength!]

[+2 Charisma!]

A few of them being the doctors I had worked with once.

Sigh.

"Nothing personal, I suppose?" I mumbled as I looked at one of the doctor’s undead bodies before taking a look around to see if there was anyone alive. A few checks in the cabinets, and a few more in the locker room and the bathroom before I nodded my head.

Returning to the stairs, I saw Eva and the nurses expectantly looking at me. There was hope in their eyes, waiting for me to speak.

"Anyone?" Eva asked.

"None," I answered, before which they turned silent again.

They were hoping for survivors, though it would be a miracle for anyone to survive in these rooms that barely had any weapons for defense.

Turning away from them, I looked at the number of zombies from 20th to the 23rd floor. Honestly, quite a lot. But thinking about the level up, I braced myself before moving up again.

Just like last time, I moved in alone.

Though there were two key differences between the 19th Floor hunt and this one.

One was that the number of zombies was actually less than what I had expected. Barely 3 of them. I had to make sure to check all the rooms, bathrooms, and corner areas to see if there was anyone hiding there.

The other thing was that, even though I checked all the rooms, I grew skeptical, wondering if I had still missed something. Because the quest covered all four floors, it was impossible to tell. Hence, I searched at least twice more before confirming that there were none left to hunt.

"Let’s just hope that’s all there is to it," I prayed silently before getting out and moving to the 21st floor.

It was even more absurd than the 20th.

There were no zombies.

This... made me think of two possibilities.

One was that all the zombies from above had come down previously to the 18th floor where Eva was trapped. Or... they were all above trying to get into one of the rooms where someone was alive.

Given the circumstances with the quest, it’s highly likely the latter one. I sighed as I braced myself.

Just like the 21st, the door on the 22nd floor was open as well, and similarly, there were no zombies on this floor either.

Well.

Fuck.

"Shit luck," I cursed under my breath before slowly moving up to the 23rd floor where I could hear the zombies even before I entered the open door to the floor.

It’s a whole party going on in there, huh? I thought as I tried to peek and found the horde of zombies standing monotonously in a daze.

[Lesser D-Grade!]

I pressed my lips together as I slowly walked back down, leaving the door open as it was. On the 19th floor where Eva was waiting for me, I put my index finger to my lips as I signalled her to get into the floor.

She nodded as her eyes turned serious before we both entered the floor and then asked in a low voice,

"What happened?"

"The whole 23rd floor is crawling with them," I answered with a focused look.

I wasn’t exactly worried about the number.

Killing 70 zombies wasn’t hard.

But there were 8 Lesser D-Grades among them, about which I had no idea.

Eva turned silent for a few seconds before pondering something and then asking,

"Can’t we skip them?"

"The door is open. Closing will produce sound, attracting the zombies. There were a few strong ones among them, so I doubt the gate will hold them," I responded, my mind still thinking of ways I can kill them. Even if I ignore the quest, the fact that leaving so many zombies at our back can backfire if they end up on our tail later on. Not something I would like really...

"Where are Natalia and Martha?" I asked, to which Eva pointed to the bathroom, while I nodded.

Hopefully, we can think of some-

-Rawr!

And my heart skipped a beat as both Eva and I looked in the direction of the exit door.
