Chapter 19: Distraction

Eva Grace was a kind girl.

A brave girl.

Born as the youngest daughter of the most promising doctor in the state, she had quite a lot of privileges that most would only dream about. But unlike her elder brother and sister, Eva never let the money get to her head. For her, talent and hard work were far more important than money and fame.

Adding to that, despite being born into a rich family, she had quite a humble upbringing. Perhaps a quirk of her dislike of how her siblings treated her friends and those around her.

Her ideals and dreams centered around building her life with her own hands. She wanted to be known not by the name of her father but by her own merit. And perhaps, because of a little competitiveness, she chose the same path as their father and siblings.

That is to be a doctor.

To best them in their own field... that was the dream of little Eva.

So she studied hard.

Day and night, week after week, she did everything she could, learnt everything she possibly was able to. And the result of that hard work?

She scored more than her siblings and father did in their exams in their times. It was an achievement she was proud of.

Everything was set.

Now, all she needed to finish med school, ace it, and then start her own career. Standing as Doctor Eva, and not just the younger sister of her genius siblings, or as the daughter of some famed doctor.

Everything was set...

Until the world came falling upon her, as the apocalypse broke everything down.

The 20 years of hard work went down the drain, as she now found herself in a situation that she could not make head or tail of. Standing in this craziness with skills that barely helped her in this messed-up situation.

It was the same when it started.

It is the same now that she could hear zombies about to pour from that emergency exit.

"Eva, go hide in the nurse’s room. I will hold them back," Michael said as he looked at Eva with a kind look. Unlike her, who was hiding her scared look, putting up a brave front, Michael was genuinely looking at her with a calm gaze.

Hide.

That was the best plan?

But for how long?

And what if Michael dies?

What then?

Wait for her death?

-Rawr!

Her shaking eyes were once again focused towards the emergency gate from where a zombie was slowly descending. Her small breaths, which were dampening her ability to think, made her feel a little suffocated. A zombie was moving down the stairs, a few more whose shadows were oscillating on the wall.

"Michael... " She braced herself up.

She probably can’t kill a single zombie yet.

She had never done that.

Up until now, all she did was put up a brave front, holding on to her guts, hoping things would get better.

It was hard.

"...I will be a distraction."

But she won’t be useless.

She can’t stay useless.

She will at least reduce the burden on Michael.

He can kill them.

He has killed them before.

So...

She will be a distraction for the zombies and reduce the burden on him. This way, the chances of their survival would increase by a huge amount.

"But-" Michael didn’t like the idea. His worried look was pretty obvious to understand. Though Eva had already made up her mind.

While she knew she could become a burden in case she got in his way, if she could attract even 10 zombies towards her, Michael would have a few more percent chances to survive.

It was a gamble.

A gamble she was betting her life on.

...

I looked at Eva’s determined expression.

Honestly, she looked more frustrated than worried.

Well. It won’t be a bad thing if she can distract a few zombies off me. Though a single mistake can get them killed. I couldn’t help but sigh before making the best way to use her.

"All right. First, call Martha and Natalia. Then hide in the waiting room. Wait until the glass breaks, then move into the bathroom in there," I commanded, thinking of a rough plan.

I saw Eva nodding before hurrying to the bathroom, calling Natalia and Martha before both of them came.

Natalia shrieked while Martha narrowed her eyes at the incoming zombies.

"Go! Go! Go!" I urged them, and they followed Eva, who was explaining the plan to them. Since Martha had the other bag of weapons, I did not need to worry too much about them, as I simply dashed towards the other side against the waiting room, into the open terrace.

Killing them was the plan.

But I somehow felt that I needed to have more than just that if I wanted to survive this one...

"Please be useful," I prayed as I poured the last extra skill points that I had into [Inspect!].
