Chapter 396: Power Comes With Consequences

"I didn’t know Archie was a passionate person," Ronan said, making Arielle laugh.

She took a deep breath, feeling touched by the short letter Archie had sent her.

"I didn’t know either," Arielle replied, folding back the letter.

Arielle was so moved that she felt like crying. However, she knew if she did, Ronan wouldn’t like it. So, she raised her head to stop the tears from falling. A gentle touch on her cheek slowly calmed her down.

To someone who lost many members of his family for the throne, Archie sounded like two different people. Arielle felt a little sad because she was the only sibling that Archie had. In the past, Archie was always with Andrea or Annalise, being their bodyguard and pampering them dearly.

Now, the two sisters were no longer in this world. All the attention that Archie had given them was diverted to Arielle, who just so happened to be no longer around him.

"I hope Archie finds someone soon to keep him company. He must be lonely. He had lived in the lively palace, but he was alone now," said Arielle. She embraced the letter Archie had sent her gently.

Ronan nodded. He understood Arielle’s concern. Archie was too young to take on the role of a king. Besides, the man didn’t have any friends like he did with his other three friends. Archie also no longer had another sibling.

Ronan shrugged his shoulders. That was what Archie asked of him. To make him the king of Nieverdell. His loneliness was the price he had to bear.

"You’re not thinking of returning to the South, are you?" Ronan asked, narrowing his eyes sharply.

Arielle shook her head, making Ronan nod in satisfaction. "I don’t want to remember again what they did to Sasha. It is awful."

Arielle stood up to keep the letter Archie had sent in the drawer. She would keep the letter well and replied to it the next day. Arielle turned and saw Ronan still on the carpet, sitting with his hands behind his back while watching her.

"Are you done with work? It’s faster than usual," Arielle asked while looking at the clock on the wall.

Ronan nodded. "Tomorrow William and I will go to the western border for three days. I’ll be back before the palace’s monthly agenda is done. That’s why I want to spend this night together. I will really miss you, Arielle."

"Oh, you’re going to Frostmount Village?"

"Yes."

Ronan could see Arielle’s face gleaming up. However, he couldn’t bring her with him like the last time because he had to move fast. And the temperature outside was so extreme from the past two days. He didn’t want Arielle to get sick, although he would bring a priest with them later.

"Sorry, I have to travel quickly, Sweetheart."

Ronan stood up and invited Arielle to enjoy the night scenery through the window. He opened the curtain, then moved behind Arielle’s body to hug her tightly from behind.

"Sorry, that I can’t take you with me. I must finish the negotiation for the construction of the new route connecting Thebis and Wolgast after the neutral area claimed by the South."

Arielle grabbed Ronan’s hand that was hugging her body. "I understand."

"I wanted to take you with me. Just... look, the weather has been very extreme these days."

Outside the room, the snow was falling hard along with a strong wind. Arielle remembered breaking through a blizzard to meet Ronan and to save a child who had gotten lost behind the hills of Frostmount Village.

"Yeah, these days there’s always a snowstorm at night," Arielle replied.

Ronan didn’t know what had happened. There were no reports of anomalies in the weather that Priest Elis had conveyed to him. Even so, his hunch said something had happened.

However, Ronan still didn’t know what it was. Whether it was related to Arielle’s power or not. He had a bad feeling, and he didn’t like it.

His eyes stared at the reflection of himself and Arielle in the glass window in front of him. He could see the red eyes and the scars on his face. Ronan didn’t know when was the last time he felt insecure about his face. With Arielle, he always managed to forget about himself. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Ronan pulled down the dress on the girl’s shoulders and gave many soft kisses on Arielle’s exposed shoulders.

"Arielle... if I were given a choice between you or Northendell, remember I will always choose you."

Ronan hugged Arielle’s body tighter, making it difficult for the girl to breathe. "Ronan, you are hugging me too tightly...."

"You mean so much to me. I really don’t care if Northendell’s curse or misfortune never finds its way out as long as you are always by my side."

"Ronan?"

Ronan knew that everything would have its consequences. Just like Archie. Arielle’s power must also have its consequences. Even the priests who could regulate mana from within their own bodies had to bear the consequences. They had to go through extreme conditions that risked their lives to get that power.

It was possible that people who couldn’t withstand those extreme conditions actually destroyed their own bodies. He had witnessed it yesterday while inspecting the Northendell prisoners.

Many prisoners could not survive Northendell’s extreme weather, and none of them had their mana flow open, which caused their bodies not being able to receive the power. So, they died.

Ronan didn’t want Arielle to force herself that could be fatal for her body. Ronan preferred to live like they did right now. Even though Arielle’s power was real, the spring in Northendell still sounded very strange to his ears. Thus, Ronan didn’t care if he lived under the snow any longer.

Arielle cupped the man’s face so they could look at each other. Ronan could see his reflection in the girl’s blue irises. The irises were as bright and clear as the spring sky where the sunlight reflected off the dew.

"Don’t worry, I’m much stronger than you think. Trust everything to me."

Ronan chuckled and nodded. Maybe he was just too exhausted from all the work he had to do. He nodded, putting his faith in the girl. Ronan believed Arielle could do it, and he would always be there to support her.

Arielle turned around and gave him a long kiss on the chin. She couldn’t reach Ronan’s lips, even though she had tiptoed. The man was too tall. Ronan smiled at Arielle’s adorable behavior. He lifted the girl’s body to make it easier for her to reach his lips.

"Now kiss me properly."
