Loving The Cursed Werewolf King-Chapter 464: The Bad Hunch
"Can I touch him?" Arielle asked for permission.
"N-no, Your Majesty. His heat is very high. I am afraid it will hurt you."
Arielle smiled reassuringly at the mother, and she touched the baby’s forehead. She jolted in surprise. The child’s body temperature was not normal. Arielle took the mother to see one of the doctors who was examining a young man’s leg, which was sprained and injured from running from the rubble.
After he finished applying the bandages, the doctor checked the child’s condition and frowned. He checked the child’s pulse and oral cavity.
"Has this child been exposed to the cold for a long time?" the doctor asked the mother.
"I- I think so. What’s wrong, doctor? Did something happen to my son?" the mother asked frantically.
"It’s possible that this boy is opening the mana flow in his body. We have to meet one of the priests!"
"Let me call him," Arielle said. She hurriedly left the tent where the mother and child were resting. Arielle called Priest Jill who was talking to William.
"Priest Jill, please come with me for a moment," Arielle asked, pulling Priest Jill’s hand to come with her quickly.
Priest Jill immediately sat down to form a mana trigram in his hand and touched the baby’s hand. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"Right, this baby is opening his mana flow. This is a crucial and dangerous time. We need to have to keep an eye on him and make sure the mana streams pass through the path not exceeding the limit, or it will end up being dangerous for him. I will put an apprentice priest to look after this child, and I will also check on him periodically."
Arielle saw the baby who was whining with a red face.
"Has he ever been through anything?" Arielle asked. She couldn’t bear to see the mother struggling to calm the child who didn’t stop crying.
The woman had tears in her eyes and nodded.
"Our house was in the middle of the village. Yesterday, when the avalanche occurred, half of our house was infiltrated by dirt and snow. When it happened, I was at the house of a relative who had just given birth. I left the baby to my husband, but until now my husband has not been found, only my child is found, piling up in the snow. My son then had a fever, and I had a hard time asking for help to buy medicine... I thought it was just a normal fever... but the fever was getting higher every day..."
After Priest Jill helped lower the mana flow in the baby’s body, the baby slowly regained his composure and fell asleep for the first time after two days of fever. Arielle asked permission to see the other people’s conditions. She visited the tents where the people took refuge one by one.
It turned out that the baby wasn’t the only one whose mana flow was open. There were more than ten others. Three of them were elderly people who were found too late because they were trapped by the snow until finally, they were evacuated.
However, something felt different... For some reason, Arielle felt a strange premonition... She felt heavy and sad every time she saw people who were going through the opening of their mana flow gathered in one tent.
Arielle went back to Ronan’s tent to rest. She was restless for a strange reason....
Ronan, who saw Arielle enter the tent, followed her in and found the girl was looking down languidly. He then sat down in front of his wife...
"My wife, did something make you sad?" Ronan asked Arielle whose eyes started to tear up.
"Ronan ... I have a bad feeling," said Arielle, making the man frown.
"What is it? Tell me so I can help you."
"About the people who are in the transition period of opening their mana path. Somehow, I have a feeling... that they can’t make it through tonight."
"Arielle?"
Ronan cupped his wife’s face and dived into Arielle’s trembling blue irises.
"Why are you talking like that?"
Instantly, the wind hit their tent quite hard. Ronan looked back and saw Arielle who still couldn’t shake off her bad feeling. She also didn’t know why she could talk like that. It was just... what she learned in the book was different from what she saw.
"In the book... It’s written that someone who goes through the opening of the mana flow will have a continuous fever. However, earlier, when I visited an old man, he said they were burning from the inside. I don’t see that trait from the book I have studied..."
"Wife, it’s just a book. Indeed, sometimes theory does not match reality. Priest Jill was also making sure that they can survive. If they can get through this period, they can be trained to become priests and help more people," Ronan replied, trying to calm Arielle.
Ronan pulled Arielle to rest on his lap. Arielle had done a lot today. Maybe the girl had too much empathy that it turned into an exaggerated worry.
"Arielle, you’ve done a lot today. I am proud of you."
Arielle couldn’t shake off her worries and hugged Ronan’s body tighter to forget her bad feeling.
"Is that true?" she asked again.
Ronan nodded. He took Arielle’s face and kissed her lips briefly.
"You know, I was so happy when they called you queen. My feelings bubbled with pride," said the man, making Arielle blush.
"At first, I was quite surprised because my coronation day is still a few days away."
Ronan remembered about the important agenda. Arielle had to return to the palace as soon as possible. He had also invited many royal guests to attend Arielle’s coronation. He could not postpone that important day. Besides that, after Arielle’s coronation day, Ronan had to get ready for another full moon. He didn’t want anything to happen and ruin Arielle’s another happy day.
"You have to go home tomorrow and go through the normal route. You will arrive the day before the coronation day. I don’t want you to go through Birwick Forest again. I will follow you the next day and will arrive at the same time as you," Ronan said, and Arielle agreed.
Arielle stretched her muscles, then rested her head on Ronan’s shoulder.
"Hopefully, they can get through this time so that I can welcome them in the cathedral as apprentice priests in the future," said Arielle, making Ronan smile.
"They’ll definitely get through it, Arielle. We, northerners, have been going through things like this for hundreds of years. This is just a common occurrence. We can entrust Priest Jill and the others. You can rest now. I’ll wake you up when the food arrives," said Ronan who covered his wife with the warm blanket that had been provided for him.
However, when the night came ... the temperature was getting colder. Much colder than usual. The snow fell so hard that the screams of a woman echoed throughout the village, surprising Arielle, who was eating her dinner.
Ronan was not in the tent. The man was watching the process of distributing food to the refugees. Arielle ran because she recognized the voice. She covered her mouth in a gasp when she saw the weeping Priest Jill bowed with a blood tricked from his head. Arielle saw a bowl containing food scattered on the floor.
The mother was sobbing while hugging her baby who was... dead.
