Chapter 471: Night Of Terror

Kael put his hand in front of Lazarus, signalling the man not to act rashly. The night had come. The wolf in front of him was Ronan who had lost his human side. The best thing for them to do was run away, but no matter how fast they ran, it would be in vain. Ronan would easily catch up to them.

"We’re slowly retreating," Kael whispered to reduce the sound as low as possible.

Then, the sky became brighter. Kael and Lazarus looked up to see the moon shining brightly for the first time in their lives. Both of them were so flabbergasted that they forgot the danger in front of them. The moonlight that night was very bright. It made every dark side on the riverbank slowly become visible. Now, it was not only Lazarus who cursed.

Kael immediately took out his sword when he saw a pack of wolves smaller than Ronan ready to pounce on him and Lazarus. Ronan seemed to lead the pack of wolves. Kael didn’t like this situation. Actually, he could have fought the wolves alone. However, he wasn’t sure if he could fight Ronan’s wolf, which was so huge that it looked like it was going to tear him apart in a second.

"Lazarus, is your sword ready?" Kael asked without looking back where Lazarus was.

"Yup. But there’s a bit of trouble back here."

"Are we surrounded?" Kael asked.

"Yes, we are surrounded," Lazarus replied, confirming Kael’s words.

"Alright, I hope I don’t die. Aimee will hate me if I can’t protect you."

Lazarus laughed. "Same here. Please, don’t die either. There’s no one to walk Aimee down the altar of the chapel when I marry her if you die."

Kael smiled and positioned his sword towards the wolves in front of him.

AWOO!!!

Ronan howled once more, and the pack of wolves ran across the cold river at once. They jumped off the cliff to descend to the riverbank. Lazarus and Kael fought against the pack of wolves protecting each other’s backs.

The sound of metal meeting claws rang. They also forgot the ancient treaty that forbids killing wolves because wolves were animals that the North protected. There was no time for thinking about that. Kael and Lazarus had to survive. They managed to give one and two slashes to the bodies of the wolves that pounced on them.

AWOO!!!

Again, Ronan’s howl could be heard, and more wolves suddenly appeared from the cliff and jumped straight at Lazarus and Kael. Lazarus and Kael had almost given up on being attacked by more than twenty wolves at once.

However, before it was over, the wolf across the river growled. Kael’s sharp ears caught the movement of the many feet running towards them. The sound of shouts and screams of men drew near to them, and in the blink of an eye, there was a rain of arrows that pushed the wolves down into the river and onto the ground.

Several people threw fire torches to chase the remaining wolves away from Kael and Lazarus.

Kael turned his head and found his troops coming back to protect him.

"Commander!!! Are you okay?!"

"Admiral! You’re not hurt, are you?!"

Their screams filled Kael and Lazarus with hope. They didn’t stay still. Together with his troops, Kael and Lazarus separated their backs and gave a lesson to the pack of wolves, leaving Ronan’s wolf still standing proudly.

Its body was as tall as a full-grown stallion with jet black fur and intimidating red irises. Kael took out a gun that had been filled with anesthetic injection.

The giant wolf charged very quickly. Kael hadn’t had time to blow the anesthetic on Ronan yet, but the wolf was already in front of his eyes with its arms raised ready to claw at him.

Lazarus, who was standing not far from there, slashed the wolf’s hand until it was bleeding.

"Lazarus! It’s Ronan!" shouted Kael who saw the wolf’s hand covered in blood. The wound wasn’t deep, but still it was their friend. The deep red splattered on the ground and white snow.

"He’s not Ronan. Ronan wouldn’t hurt his own friend," Lazarus said confidently.

The wolf roared louder, causing all the flames from the torches to die instantly. The pack of wolves that had drifted away from the fire immediately drew closer behind the giant wolf.

"Kael, shoot him now!" Lazarus commanded, and Kael picked up the gun that fell to the ground, but Ronan lunged at them again, throwing Lazarus and Kael to the back. The wolf’s foot stepped on the gun, causing the liquid inside to spill out.

There was still some sedative left in his pocket, but Kael couldn’t shoot it because his gun had been crushed by the wolf. The only way for him was to come closer, then inject it directly at the wolf.

Ronan howled again, causing the pack of wolves behind Kael and Lazarus to lunge at the other knights. Kael and Lazarus join forces to defeat the pack of wolves. This time, Ronan got into the mess. Kael ordered them to shoot out the yellow and white flares so his troops elsewhere could know that they needed help.

In the midst of the chaos, Kael slashed quite a number of wolves and got closer to Ronan who was biting the hand of one of the knights. The man was screaming hysterically.

Lazarus saw where Kael was headed. His eyes widened when a wolf jumped from behind to pounce on the man.

"Kael! WATCH OUT!" he shouted as he stretched out his left hand, which was bitten by the wolf.

"Lazarus!"

"I’m still standing! I’ll take care of your back!" Lazarus exclaimed to Kael.

His left hand started to feel numb, and Lazarus continued to protect Kael’s back with his right hand. Kael didn’t want to lose either. Not only did he injure them, but he instantly killed the wolves that got in his way.

Now Ronan’s wolf was with its back to him. It was busy attacking the knights who kept shooting at it with the arrows. Dozens of arrows had pierced its body, but the giant wolf did not fall. Kael stepped on one of the wolves, then jumped on Ronan wolf’s back who roared in revolt to get Kael off its back.
