Chapter 96: Cutting Words in the Hospital Halls
Eira adjusted her coat as she stepped out of the doctor’s office, clutching a folder of paperwork in her hand.
The air in the hospital hallway felt fresh and easy to breathe, not from sickness or sorrow, but from her decision.
The doctor’s words repeated in her head:
"The surgery will be difficult, but it’s worth it if you want to move forward."
For the first time in years, Eira wanted to move forward.
She wanted to live—not for revenge, but for herself and Callian.
She tightened her grip on the folder, drowning in thoughts of the future, when the sound of loud heels against the tile broke her focus.
Eira turned her head and smiled.
Mita Anand, of all people, was walking out of a nearby room, her confidence was shining like a sun in a cloudy sky.
She was dressed impeccably, even for a hospital visit, her hair and makeup as perfect as if she’d just left an event.
Eira’s eyes rolled. Before she could turn to leave, Mita’s voice sliced through the air.
"Well, well," Mita said in a sugary tone. "Fancy seeing you here, Eira."
Eira didn’t flinch, didn’t hesitate.
She turned fully to face her, raising an eyebrow.
"Mita. I didn’t know they started treating delusions in hospitals."
Mita smirked, her arms crossed instantly.
"Clever. But I could say the same to you. What brings you here? Finally realizing there’s no cure for bitterness?"
Eira took a step forward. "You seem to have all the time in the world to follow me, Mita. I’d almost think you’re obsessed."
"Hardly," Mita replied with a laugh. She tilted her head.
"Though I can’t help but notice you look even paler than usual. Are we choosing to die after all?"
Eira smiled faintly, refusing to rise to the bait. "Interesting you’d bring that up. Visiting the doctors because of Callian’s alleged abuse, are we?"
Mita’s smile tightened, her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Yes. It’s exhausting, having to explain to strangers how dangerous your husband is." She stepped closer, lowering her voice as if sharing a secret.
"But you already know that, don’t you?"
Eira met her glare without blinking.
"I know you’re running out of stories to tell. And judging by the smudge of your lipstick, they’re starting to catch on."
Mita’s expression switched a little, her facial muscles moved, but she recovered quickly, her smirk returned immediately.
"Ah, Eira. So young, so naive. You really think you’ve won, don’t you? Just because you’ve got him by your side now."
Eira’s smile widened slightly. "Let me guess. You’re going to tell me how much Callian loves you deep down, that he’s just waiting for the right moment to come running back to you?"
"Hah!" Mita laughed.
"It’s not about running back. He never left. Men like Callian don’t belong to anyone, sweetheart. They take what they want, and when they’re done..."
She paused, letting the words hang. "Well, let’s just say you won’t like the ending."
Eira’s smile didn’t disappear.
She stepped closer, her voice lowered to a calm but cutting tone.
"It must kill you, doesn’t it? Knowing that after everything you’ve done—every lie, every scheme—he still chose me."
Mita’s jaw tightened, her smirk vanished for just a moment.
"He chose convenience. You’re the shiny new thing he can parade around. But when the novelty wears off, and it always does, you’ll see."
"Funny," Eira said, lifting her chin thoughtfully. "You sound like someone who already knows what it feels like to be discarded."
The color rose in Mita’s cheeks, but she kept her composure.
"Careful, Eira. You’re playing a very dangerous game. Callian has layers you couldn’t possibly understand. But I do."
Eira chuckled softly. "Oh, I’m sure you understand him perfectly. After all, it takes one manipulative liar to recognise another." freёnovelkiss-com
Mita took another step forward.
They were now just a few inches away from each other.
"You can call me anything you like. But at the end of the day, I know what Callian wants, what he needs. And when he realises it too, where do you think that leaves you?"
Eira leaned in slightly.
"It leaves me exactly where I’ve always been. At the center of his world. And you? Well, you’ll still be chasing shadows."
Mita’s hand twitched, as if she wanted to lash out, but she stopped herself.
Instead, she straightened, brushing an invisible speck of dust off her coat.
"You’re confident," she said. "I’ll give you that. But confidence only gets you nowhere. Let’s see how long you can keep this little act up."
Eira smiled again and stepped back. "Oh, don’t worry about me, Mita. Worry about yourself. Because the only act in this room is yours, and it’s starting to get old... like you..."
"I’m only twenty-five, you idiot."
"Twenty-five hundred years old, yes."
"You hate me because I’m the same age as Callian?" Mita raised a brow.
"No. You look at least forty."
Mita’s lips pressed together, but she said nothing more.
She turned on her heel, walking away with her usual grace, though her posture was just a touch too close to falling.
Eira watched her go, her chest felt tight, but not with fear.
"She’s slipping," Eira muttered to herself, her lips curved into a small smile once again.
She adjusted her coat again, clutching the folder in her hand.
Whatever game Mita thought she was playing, Eira wasn’t going to lose.
Never.
She turned and walked toward the exit, smiling and laughing to herself as if she was possessed by an evil ghost.
Because while Mita talked,
Eira acted. And actions always spoke louder than words.
"Callian is mine," she stated. "I would always choose him, and I know for a fact, he will choose me."

There was a message from Sana: -Hey, do you want to go out tonight?-
"Hhhhmm... I’ve never actually gone out... I wonder what it would be like?"
She typed back: - Sure. What time?-
