Chapter 41: Upon A Moon

’’Once upon a moon,’’ Everyone clapped when the stage darkens and only the slender figure of the man could be visible. Small boys in funny suspenders, caked all over their faces with a clown-like makeup began to move in-between the crowd to hand out refreshments.

It was wolfs breath and a funny-looking snack stacked on a long stick and dripping with oil and sugar.

She received the other and politely declined the disgusting drink. Evangeline took a small bite and nodded at the similarity of the taste to a jam donut in her world. It was eatable but a bit salty.

’’The moon goddess, in all her beauty and understanding, walked the void and formed a beautiful crystal-shaped ball and hung it in the sky, naming it the moon.’’

Everyone was captivated by the story, and she tried to also pay attention to it.

’’Beautiful jewels that twinkled brightly like beaming dots were its companions in the dark heavens, and she formed the solid ground to be the heavens’ foundation.’’

For dramatic effects, the narrator sprinkled into the air what looked like pixie dust? And everyone stared dreamily at the stage.

’’As the time went by, the moon goddess stared down at her creation and noticed it wasn’t perfect yet. Something was still amis. So, she created the plants and tress, the beautiful snow that rained non-stop on us. She formed giants that could crush boulders in the palm of their hands, creatures with tiny little wings that could dominate the sky along with the birds. The undead that dominate the far east and of course, the once great witches of the west!’’

’’But something was still amiss to make her world a perfect place.’’

’’Until,’’ She watched as people held their breaths at what he was going to say next. ’’People with the ability to howl to the moon and praise its greatness, shape shifters who stormed the earth and are blessed with one partner for life. Immortal beings with primordial energy and has contributed greatly to this wonderful world of the moon goddess...only then did the moon goddess saw everything and said it was good!’’

The thunderous roar and cheers that erupted after that was deafening.

What a way to make yourself feel better than everyone.

Evangeline stared boredly at the narrator while she munched on her snack, ignoring how Layla was jumping on her feet with the rest of the crowd.

’’Everything was good and peaceful until...’’

That seemed to build up the suspense and tension a bit.

’’...the devil god, the prince of darkness and King of demons emerged from the abyss—the darkest and dirtiest part of Hell. The weaver of nightmares and bringer of doom and destruction. He came and made more than half of the children of the moon rebelled against her, turning them to demons and monsters of the dungeons.’’

The surrounding air seemed colder and the temperature dropped significantly. Evangeline couldn’t tell if it was part of the special effects of the story.

’’They feed on children and kill the old. They burn and trample upon whatever comes to their path and draw out blood from the faint-hearted. They wiped out the entire generation of the fae kingdom and the coven of witches found in the west. They drained the mermaids of their water and ripped out the wings from the pixies. They murdered the orcs and beheaded our giants.’’

Everyone had a solemn expression on their faces. Tears streaming down Layla’s face as they all looked into the narrator for hope.

This demon prince really sounded like an awful person. Evangeline thought as she took a last bite out of her snack.

’’And now,’’ the narrator began after a long moment of silence. ’’He comes for the wolves!’’

The ugliest dummy of what was supposed to represent a hideous beast, that spawned from the pits of Hell was wheeled to the stage before everyone. Evangeline saw how they cursed and threw whatever their hands could land on at the ugly dummy. She smiled when Layla bent down to pick up snow and flung it angrily at the beast.

’’But there is hope as the moon goddess has gifted us a savior who would cause the end of the wicked reign of the demon prince and make her world a perfect place like it was before his birth!’’

’’Yeah!!!!’’ Everyone cheered.

’’She would one day rise to be the Alpha King of Astoria and lead her strong mighty pack of wolves to bring justice upon the monsters of the dungeons for the sake of the fae kingdom!’’

’’Yeah!’’

’’The Great witches of the west!’’

’’Yeah!’’

’’The mermaids, pixies, giants, and the orcs!’’

’’Yeah!’’

’’And finally for our brave soldiers, mother, and daughters we have lost to the aging battle against the demon prince.’’

’’Yeah!’’

’’So, who is brave enough to come up here...’’ One of those young boys putting on suspenders hurried towards the narrator and handed him a burning torch. ’’AND SET THE DEMON PRINCE ON FIRE!’’

Almost everyone raised their hands to do the honors.

’’Why don’t the princess herself, Evangeline of the house of Crimson Ridge Pack, demonstrate?’’

Her jaw dropped when Layla suggested on top of her voice, and everywhere grew silent as they finally noticed her presence. The shift in focus from the narrator to her was sudden. Probably not expecting the one they were all rooting for to kill the evil demon prince to be right in their midst.

’’Oh, how hopeful? Come on stage, Princess Evangeline and lit the fire to the path of your destiny.’’

If not that they were standing at the front and all eyes were on her, she could have slipped out of the crowd and ran.

’’Come on, Eva,’’ Layla gave her a slight push when she hesitated. Evangeline gulped before moving her feet towards the stage, and she was guided by one of the young boys towards the platform and told to stand before the narrator. He lowered his head a bit in acknowledgement before handing her the giant torch and told to light the dummy that was meant to represent the Demon Prince on fire.

’’Come on, people. Give your princess some encouragement!’’

The echo of their cheers and clapping could not bury the sound of her beating heart as she neared the dummy that was twice her height, holding the torch near it. This being from what she had gathered from the story so far was terrible and does not deserve any pity.

But why was she hesitating?

She would hate to disappoint her admirers and those who had hopes for a future without the demon prince lingering with promises of destruction. She turned to Layla who was only grinning at her with pride and nodding, even demonstrating how she should burn down the dummy of the evil demon prince.

Evangeline turned and brought the fire close to the dummy. And upon contact, the lower part of the dummy roared in flames and everyone jubilated and began to hug each other with tears streaming down their cheeks. The narrator came to her with a smile and carefully collected the torch from her hands and have her facing the crowd once again. Presenting her like she was some sort of WWE champion.

It was one when they cheered her on endlessly. The smile drained from her face at the figure watching her behind the crowd.

Time seemed to slow on them the moment their eyes met, and she was sucked into those ethereal blue-red eyes hiding behind that hellish mask.

The noise from the crowd and the words from the narrator slowly faded as nothing but background noise as she focused on him. He stood there, and it felt like the snow were careful on touching him, or they would be engulfed by the darkness that surrounds him.

He looked too familiar as he stood, eyes fixed on her and the burning dummy falling apart behind her and the narrator.

One look at the burning dummy and then at her was all he did before taking a step back.

A chill poured down her spine like cold water when his eyes darkened on her possessively. Blending perfectly with the rage burning deeply in him and at the people cheering her on.

The way his eyes softened on her, tilting his head a bit to the side when she kept staring at him like a horrified statute that has just seen something she wasn’t supposed to see.

His gloved hands were still buried in his pockets as he observed her in many ways.

It all ended with a cruel smile on his lips, raising his left hand towards her. Her heart stopped in fear, thinking he was coming to take her even though it was impossible judging from the distance between them and the crowd dancing in their line of sight. They were nothing but disfigured shadows in the background. It was difficult to take her eyes from him. He wasn’t only dark but beautiful.

A being you could easily be obsessed with at just a glance.

His lips then began to move, and she found herself drawn to it as she read the meaning of his words.

I will burn you, just like you did me.

His lips curved into amusement.

You belong to Hell with me...

The noise returned and were clearer the moment he finished with a word. She blinked, and he was out of her sight—like he wasn’t just there.

What he said last kept repeating in her head over and over again. She no longer looked interested in whatever was happening around her, but she just wanted to find her friends and leave. The world around her began to spin, and she started feeling too claustrophobic and disturbed.

You belong to Hell with me, Charlotte.

How wasn’t that entity not deceived like the rest of the people I had met?

How did he guess my name right?!

Or was I wrong?
