Mated To The Demon Prince-Chapter 42: Not Yourself
That night was the creepiest night ever.
She climbed down the stage and found Layla amidst the cheering. She dragged her away from the crowd and was conscious of the Being resurfacing.
’’Let’s just go home!’’ Evangeline argued back as all the hair at the back of her neck remained stiff and straight—probably catching the vibes of that dark enigma still around and waiting for the moment to strike and set her ablaze like he promised!
How he knew her real name didn’t bother her anymore. Their safety mattered the most.
’’It’s not safe here, I am telling you!’’ She snapped back when Layla tried to say something against them leaving.
Layla gazed at her friend’s paranoia with wide eyes. She nodded her head and agreed to return home like she wanted.
’’Okay, okay, fine. We would leave. Give me a moment to get my sister.’’
Layla left her side with a hurt look and Evangeline felt bad for snapping at her like that. It wasn’t their fault she was such a joy killer.
She watched Layla pull a drunk Sisi from Gaius’ tent before waving the man goodbye and returning to her side with Sisi slung over her shoulders.
’’Would you hold our bags while I carry her on my back as we head home?’’ Layla suggested in the smallest tone, careful not to say anything that might trigger her rising frustration about everything.
Evangeline paused to take in deep breaths and nodded. She collected their bags from Layla and watched with her mind still alert for any sexy dark beings wanting to burn and hurt her friends. She didn’t want to think about how it was only her who noticed him standing there and observing all of them with malice. It was only her who seemed to be spared with the smallest amount of love in his gaze.
And it felt...
Evangeline couldn’t describe it.
It felt like that little affection in his eyes was for her and not to the person she was currently trapped inside her skin. It was weird being stared at like that judging from the first time she remembered meeting him.
He rescued her from her merciless mate and promised to find a way to bring her to him.
How did she get so distracted not to bother about the truth of being hunted by a mysterious being that had a beauty and aura no one could compare to?
Not even the Elf Prince could compare to him!
A cold breath left her lips in horror. At their first meeting, he didn’t look all that scary and dangerous. But he looked gravely displeased by what she did to that dummy.
She wasn’t really interested in doing it or was deeply involved in their quest to get rid of their devil. She was just born in this world like...six days ago?
A feeling she slowly welcomed, accompanied by a faint memory from the last moments of her past life told her she had also encountered this entity in her world!
Did it follow her here to haunt her even in the afterlife?!
She would definitely be in great need of therapy should she ever return to her world!
’’Let’s go,’’ Layla whispered the moment Sisi was comfortably on her back. She stared at both of them in silence before taking off her heavy winter coats from her shoulders. Both sisters were small and looked shorter compared to her height. As the snow picked up a harsher pace on them, she draped her coat over a peacefully sleeping Sisi being carried by her sister on her back. They both look so similar with only a few differences to tell them apart.
The coat was also big enough to cover a part of Layla as well. Though they were all strangely immune to these insane levels of coldness and were putting on their winter coats which were not as big or warm as hers. She felt like doing it. Maybe out of guilt for ruining all the fun.
’’But...but...but...’’ Layla just stared at her confused. Not being able to compose the thoughts of her mind into words.
Evangeline turned away with their bags in her hands and began to head down the path they came from, listening to the gentle crunch of snow behind her to ensure they were also coming. Soon, Layla was able to catch up and they both walked side by side on the lonely path with the moon high in the sky and shining its dull light on them.
’’So...’’ Evangeline decided to end the long silence between them. She could see that Layla wasn’t mad at her like she expected. ’’...when will it stop snowing because I can’t take seeing this fall around me every day?’’
Layla seemed to frown as if confused. She paused to meet Evangeline’s gaze. Sisi snoring softly on her back.
’’When has it ever stopped falling on us, Evangeline?’’
The hush sound of the surrounding wind wasn’t strong enough to break the awkward silence that occurred after her response. They stared at each other. Layla looked even more confused than she has ever been.
The snow does not stop?
It is...forever winter over here?
But why is that?
Not only will she not be able to talk to Ree-ree again, but she will never get to see summer, spring, or even autumn.
She didn’t know how to respond to this. The God of this world never thought of bringing in a bit of warmth to her dedicated fans?
Though, it is not that they are greatly affected by it—more like their body sees it every day and has found a way to adapt to it.
How do they love a God that leaves them in the hands of a demonic tyrant that drives a whole race into extinction and forces them to love and accept a partner she pairs them up with?
How does that even work?
Apart from the love and admiration she has been receiving from her family and everyone...nothing else in this world has made any sense.
’’O-of course,’’ she said nervously. ’’I don’t know why I said it. It was just a wish. Forget I ever said that.’’
Layla’s eyes seemed to soften on her before letting it go and urging them to continue their walk home.
’’You’ve been acting strange since you came back to us. You are not acting yourself.’’
Evangeline tensed up at the thought of her not really being the best actor she hoped she could be in her situation.
’’Mom said you are still traumatized by the idea of rejecting your mate and wanting to be away from him. But we as your closest friends...we know our Evangeline would never hesitate to burn down the demon prince or not be interested in the story she is destined to finish one day.’’
She did not say anything but kept her gaze hard on the road as they walked. If she tried to explain to them, they might probably never understand her or even be frightened. And that was not one of the things she wanted to deal with while figuring her way in this world.
’’Evangeline,’’
She turned her neck slowly to Layla moving beside her. She wondered how she hadn’t collapsed with Sisi’s weight on her back. Could it be because she is a werewolf? They can endure what most of her kind in her world can’t.
’’We love you and love you so much. I just can’t describe how much we all cherish you.’’
She found herself staring at Layla instead of saying something in response to that confession. It held so much sincerity she never thought existed or could be shown towards her.
’’The Demon Prince has done so many bad things to your people and the inhabitants of our world. We even lost...’’
’’The point is for this story to end well. It is only going to end well for us if you fulfill all the hopes and dreams many people have on you. We only burn a dummy at the beginning of every year to remind us that we still have a chance against those heartless monsters. Call us delusional, but we believe all things must come to an end.’’
’’Evangeline,’’
Now she found herself standing in the middle of the path being held by Layla’s deep green eyes.
’’We believe in you and in the day you would drag that monster down our streets, present him before us and burn him until he takes his last breaths. ’’
All she could do was to gulp down hard at their high expectations despite their love and affection shown to her.
How the fuck did you become the only hope of this world, Evangeline?
