Chapter 58: Real But Not Real

The world he wanted to show her was not like any other or what she had in mind it will be. The portal they came in through disappeared behind them the moment they stepped into this world. Everywhere was crystalline and pure white. The ground they stepped on was in the fashion of a glass that was in-built with a thousand blue stones. Their reflections visible wherever they stood and the grey clouds above them stretched on to infinity in this realm.

Evangeline’s eyes widened at the unique beauty this world held. It didn’t snow and everywhere was so peaceful and quiet that you didn’t need to be that calm to hear your heartbeats. She turned to face the Elf prince who was grinning happily at her reaction to this place. It was like they had gone to a whole new dimension. A place reserved for the purest in heart, and even the most holy saint would feel so unworthy of this place.

It was beautiful in its own way, and they were the only ones in here.

’’Where...have you taken me to?’’

The Elf Prince looked a bit surprised that she could not guess where she was at the moment. He was still a young prince, obsessing over the famous warrior princess of the wolf kingdom—blessed by the moon goddess with great strength. The main reason he came down to settle among the wolves and enroll in this school to see her in person and confirm if she was indeed who they all said she was.

’’Your Highness, I have just taken you to where you’ve always dreamed to be.’’

Maybe that would make her be more impressed than she was now.

Evangeline’s face fell confused.

The world she’s always longed to be in?

She looked at such world. It looked nothing like Earth. What should she call this place?

Only Evangeline would know and she was not her. She turned to the prince who was looking at her expectedly for a reaction.

’’Uh...’’

’’Your Highness,’’ He placed one of his hands on her forearm, turning her around until her back was pressed against him. His face over her shoulder. She tried not to do as much as to take a single breath at their closeness, her cheeks flushing as he said softly behind her ears with a smile. ’’I once read in one of the many stories about you that you’ve always wanted to know if this world existed and one day pay it a visit and see what it is about. Although, no one was bold enough to tell you it doesn’t exist.’’

Evangeline stared not knowing what to say. Her eyes observing the world before her eyes, wondering whether it was real or not.

’’But since I have found you the most interesting person before I laid my eyes on you... I have always wanted to bring you here. The world of mirrors.’’

’’But you said it doesn’t exist...’’

’’Oh, yes, it doesn’t exist, your highness,’’ His arms around her loosened to wrap around her waist, bringing her closer to him as he rested his head on her shoulders. His touch should have been repulsive or made her angry like she had always imagined she would be if any other touch her apart from Ree-ree.

Instead of repulsion and anger, she found herself leaning towards him knowing she shouldn’t be allowing this.

Ree-ree would be so hurt if he finds out.

There would be no difference between her and her mother.

’’I sharpened my magical abilities for days without rest. I cultivated tirelessly beside the bounding river, and even withstood the realm of knives and fire so I could impress you with this. My magic became strong enough to create this lowest version of what we imagine the world of mirrors would look like. While none of what you see around you is necessarily real, the gift this world brings to its visitors can be received if you’d like to.’’

Evangeline turned her neck to stare at him in shock. His handsome face so close, she thought he would lean close to plant a small kiss on her lips. Her eyes then wondered to his perfect pink lips before locking with his forest green eyes again.

’’You...went through all that just to...’’

He cocked one of his perfectly shaped eyebrows at her in slight amusement when she couldn’t complete her words.

The feeling of being able to impress her was satisfying and the adorable look on her face was pleasing to watch. He could stare at it all day and night.

’’Do you like it?’’

She turned away, once again, feeling tongue-tied and did not know how to feel about this. Or how to pretend to be as excited as Evangeline would to see this place. The thought of him doing this for Evangeline and not her pulled her away from his hold.

Ree-ree has put her on radio silence for a long time now, and she is only doing her best to keep it sane within her. There is a high chance he might not be in-love with her as she is now, and that is a truth she hoped wouldn’t be her reality one day. Now that this Elf prince has singled her out to be romantic with her. Which was obvious that it wasn’t for her, but for the person they still think was in-charge of this physical form.

It hurt her the most that this sudden transmigration of hers was soon going to do more harm than good.

If she could be bold enough to cry, she would have without hesitating. She moved away from the prince, who still had his eyes fixed on her.

Evangeline had to be destroyed at soul-level for her to have a physical body, and now she had to throw away the memories of her past life and self to live for Evangeline. They each had to die and live for each other, but why was it feeling like she had so much to lose than Evangeline did?

Or maybe because she wasn’t yet shown the life this body endured before she took over. She turned to give the Elf Prince a false smile. All those things do not matter now.

’’So...what are the gifts I get to receive in this world?’’

The small smile he gave her resembled a smirk. It was sufficient to win many hearts, but not hers that easily. She tried her best to play along like she was expected to.

’’Don’t tell me you can’t guess that as well?’’

’’Well, you made this world real on my behalf with your amazing cultivation skills. I was hoping the gifts wouldn’t be the same as those in books about this place?’’ 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

It was his turn to smile as he moved close to her.

’’It isn’t. In fact, I don’t know what they are myself.’’

She raised her eyebrows at this.

’’I want this little creation of mine to surprise us both while we wait for its gifts.’’

She saw him lower himself to sit on the ground and decided to do the same as well, sitting so close until their shoulders brushed against each other. The Elf prince couldn’t stop feeling amused by her act, so he made sure there was no space left beside them.

The cool breeze of this fantasy world he had just created was inviting. It was indeed beautiful to be its God and have a beautiful goddess beside you to stare at it together. He would look at her every second to see if she was indeed happy about this. Though the fixed smile on her face was starting to feel more forced and unnatural, but he would rather not think she was doing this to please him.

Then he laid back on the floor, with his arms folded behind his head, as he let his eyes fall close. Feeling her do the same thing he did brought another satisfied smile on his face.

’’Will laying like this prepare us to receive the gifts?’’ She asked beside him after staying in this position for a while.

’’No, but it gives me a beautiful view of you,’’ he said. She turned in surprise to see him laying on his side as his eyes fell dreamily on her. The slight blush that occupied her cheeks told him she was probably feeling the same way to. He has been attracted to her from the first time he heard her name. He had always wondered how she looked like, and he wouldn’t lie to be so disappointed in himself for not putting more efforts to imagine her better.

She was definitely and outstandingly beautiful. More beautiful than the female Elf he was used to, and he does not mind them ruling both their worlds together as one.

Evangeline looked away when she noticed she was once again getting sucked in by his charms. After some time, she felt the muscles in her arms relaxing until the point of not being able to move them. Even the ones by her legs were slowly giving in to this force weighing her down. Her eyes falling close in response.

’’I feel sleepy,’’ she said quickly as fatigue took over her senses one by one.

’’Me too.’’

He said surprisingly. She wanted to turn to see him and ask more questions about this. Whether it was safe to give in or this was just the most comfortable way of dying.

’’But don’t worry, it’s alright. I am here. No harm would befall us. Stay calm and welcome its gift to you.’’

What...?

Gift...?

How was this...

Her eyes closed completely and the first thing that welcomed her in that deep dream state was lightning and the angry rumble of thunder. Her vision darkening before slowly revealing the blurriest version of a place.

’’Now, it is time for Death to play God.’’

His knees were soaked in what looked like water. His head hung low in shame and in regret. A tear slid down from his face, slipped from his jaw to fall as a drop of blood in the muddy water.

He looked so familiar and hurt.
