Chapter 62: Dead Trees

After school, she was beyond excited to leave with her friends because that would mean not being followed around by him. Evangeline looked uninterested at the talk ongoing between Sisi and Layla about some wolves in her class and how annoying they were.

When they paused walking, she turned to see why they stopped.

’’Oh, Eva. We have a message to deliver to Grandmother Supreme from our mother. And we are not sure if you would be interested in coming along with us to visit her again.’’ 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Of course, I won’t.

Not after she made it clear the last time she hates me for something I don’t have control over. And not to think of the pending task...

She gave them both an understanding smile and nodded that she would be alright walking back home from here alone.

’’Are...are you sure? We honestly don’t mind if you come along with us...’’

’’Oh, it’s fine. Honestly. I would visit her some other time. I think I need to go home and rest for tomorrow. ’’

Both Layla and Sisi felt strangely guilty of no reason. Their face moving to look for ways to convince her to come with them so it wouldn’t look like she was being excluded or left out.

’’Well, Grandmother Supreme has been—’’

She moved close to push the both of them down the path that led to Grandmother’s supreme’s house. She knew what they wanted to say next was a lie. Grandmother Supreme would never be interested in seeing her again. She was probably somewhere in her house thinking of when to have her do that task.

’’Both of you should visit her and deliver the message for now. I would be fine finding my way from here. I am sure I could see her another time...’’

’’But...’’

Sisi immediately wrapped her hands around her sister’s arms and began to pull Layla down the path just before waving her goodbye. Layla would turn around to look at her in guilt. She was not at peace with herself to leave her going home all by herself. But she waved at them and assured her ghost-like companion that she would be alright.

The path back home was eerily quiet and that was then she realized it was so because Layla and Sisi were not with her to engage her with their endless talks about many things. The snow was constantly picking up and lowering its pace in which it fell on her, and she hated how her winter boots would be completely buried in large sheets of snow on the path as she struggled to make it back to the castle.

Between the dead trees by her sides, she did not fail to notice the four hooded figures that were following her. They didn’t try to hide themselves or be discreet about their pursuit. It made her more nervous than ever before. And it was beginning to look so much like those dreaded kidnapping scenes you see in movies.

Only this time she walked faster than wasting time wondering who these people were and what they wanted to do with her.

She moved at a speed, and it got to the stage where she didn’t mind slipping on ice multiple times and almost breaking her nose. She kept moving and grew fearful when they mimicked her movements by pursuing her faster.

Her heart sank at the gang of mystery hooded figures blocking her way from a distance. They were ten and they did not have a welcoming vibe to the aura they gave.

She cursed loudly at the thought of getting kidnapped so easily like this. She turned her heels and hoped to run the other way she was coming from but paused when those hooded figures that have been following her blocked that path as well in a semicircular way.

Evangeline looked around her to find out that she was instantly cornered by more hooded figures and there was no escaping this. The worst of it all was that she had nothing in her to defend herself. This world had no emergency line she could call like the famous 911 or a pepper spray she could use to teach these creepy bastards a lesson.

She turned around again when one of the hooded figures began to approach her, his large feet making massive footprints behind him. He paused after there was a satisfactory distance between them. Evangeline gasped in horror when the figure pulled out a sharp long knife she was certain could slice through a stone in one go. He pulled out another and adrenaline overwhelmed her at the thought of these people following her all the way to this point to have her cornered and killed.

Out here in the bloody snow. Where no one would find her body or remains.

She took two small steps back in response and stiffened at the warning growl that came from this figure. The sharp knife moving in-between his fingers threateningly and she had this strong urge of passing out at the thoughts of what that could do to her should the owner decides to use it.

The figure approached her by a step, and she found herself stumbling back and falling helplessly on her backside. The figures closing on her to make her feel trapped.

She saw the faintest smirk under the large hooded cap of this figure threatening her with a knife. Her fear and helplessness seemed to please him a lot as he ate up the remaining distance between them.

She pushed herself far away from him as much as possible. Her body messed up badly by not being able to force a loud scream of help. Maybe because it sees it was hopeless trying to call out for help in the middle of nowhere.

When the figure was just inches away from her, towering over her like a beast, she watched with terror as he slowly began to pull down his hooded cap. Her eyes widening in disbelief at who wanted to take her life in such a crooked way.

’’Now, you can see why I promised you it wasn’t over between us.’’

Fuck.
