Chapter 335: Mother

"Drink this!"

But instead of obediently drinking it like she was supposed to, Violet simply stared at the vial with a look of deep scepticism on her face.

"I already swallowed the first one!" she pointed out, even as she recalled Uva’s warning not to trust the witch in front of her. It was something Uva herself had found difficult—especially since it was obvious, from how much they looked alike, that the woman was most definitely her real mother.

"That was to temporarily cut off the bond you had with each other. This one will completely erase it!" Lady June explained.

Her words made Violet outwardly gasp, shocked that she would so casually ask her to drink such a thing without telling her first.

"...You didn’t think to ask me first? Why would I want to sever the bond?" Violet demanded.

"Isn’t it obvious? You’re a witch and he’s a werewolf. In what universe do you think werewolves would ever accept you?" Lady June asked plainly, her tone firm as they stood in the grand hotel room she had lodged them in.

"Most importantly, isn’t it better to erase any probability of him finding you? Things would only get messy if he somehow traces you to the witches’ coven!" she reminded Violet, her voice cold but practical.

"By himself... other witches like me would not hesitate to kill a werewolf like him!"

"I thought we weren’t heading to the coven anytime soon!" Violet countered quickly.

"Yes, but—"

"I’m not erasing the bond!" Violet cut in sharply, her face set with an unyielding look that showed nothing Lady June could say would ever change her mind.

I’m also not swallowing any potion! she thought firmly, realizing that she could not trust the woman beside her not to act in her own interests and force her hand.

The room was huge—clearly a presidential villa with more than enough space to accommodate two people. Violet instantly got up with the intention of moving to the other room, only to hear Lady June’s voice stop her in her tracks.

"You’re not going to ask me?" she asked softly.

Without having to think twice, Violet knew exactly what question Lady June was trying to coax out of her.

But the very thought of it only pissed her off even more—especially since she was the one who deserved an explanation, if Lady June truly was her mother.

"Ask you what?" Violet turned around sharply, staring at the purple eyes of the woman who clearly had to be related to her in some way.

"If it’s about learning magic and—" she began, ready to steer the conversation elsewhere, only to hear Lady June interrupt her.

This time, her eyes glistened with unshed tears, her voice trembling as though the words were being dragged out of her soul.

"I’m... I’m your mother! I’m your biological mother. I gave birth to you, Violet!"

Her confession filled the air like a thunderclap. Violet found it a little difficult to breathe, even though Lady June had merely stated a fact she already knew deep down.

Compared to the calm and controlled expression that had always been on Lady June’s face, she now looked broken—wretched—as she raised her head and seemed lost in memory. Slowly, haltingly, she began to speak.

"It was at the time when witches were hunted intensely in this region. I was pregnant and weak. I had just given birth when someone reported that they had seen someone with purple eyes... and that was all it took for me to realize I had to run!"

Her voice carried the heavy weight of memory, trembling as she told her story.

Although Violet kept her expression indifferent, she couldn’t help but listen closely to how she had ended up in the family she was raised by.

"You were a newborn... and I was aware that if I took you with me you wouldn’t survive. Worse, we would both be found and killed. So, I did the best thing I could..."

"You abandoned me without care for whether or not I could survive!" Violet cut in, finishing the sentence for her before she could. Her hardened gaze made it clear she had little sympathy to give.

"You make it sound like you had no choice, but in your place I would have never made the same choice. Don’t paint it heroic, when we both know you just couldn’t risk having a crying baby with you while you were on the run!

To save your life, you had to abandon mine! Moreover, I doubt whoever my father was endeared you to me in any way!" Violet’s voice was sharp and filled with bitter truth.

She didn’t really know Lady June yet, but from the little she had seen, it was already clear the woman cared deeply about power. It was impossible for someone like that not to also be immensely selfish.

And selfishness was something Violet understood.

Moreover, she wasn’t looking for another mother. She was looking for power.

"You did what you had to do, and I don’t blame you. But... did you ever search for me?" Violet asked, unable to hold back the one question that haunted her. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

With her unique eye colour, it would have been easy to recognize her if Lady June had truly tried.

"I—I thought you were dead!" Lady June whispered, tears welling up as she spoke.

At that moment, Violet was done talking. She saw no reason to continue such a back-and-forth conversation.

"I’ll learn magic from you. And in one year, I’m leaving. Nothing more!" Violet declared firmly, her voice lowering as she continued.

"...Don’t expect anything more from me!"

With that, she turned and walked away without waiting for a response, heading into the next room. She shut the door firmly behind her, the sound echoing her displeasure—a lid placed over emotions she refused to let spill.

Lady June, on the other hand, seemed to be on the verge of breaking. Tears filled her purple eyes as she stared silently at the path Violet had taken and the door she had slammed.

A long, quiet moment passed.

She raised her hand to her face, wiping the edges of her eyelids damp with tears. A wry smile slowly curved her lips.

"A pity..." she whispered in a low voice, one that could be vaguely heard in the silence.

"...A year is more than long enough to change your mind. More importantly... I can change it for you, dear child!"
