Chapter 35: Furious

Ignoring the throbbing pain in her wrists, she stepped out of her room the second she was done changing out of her rumpled clothes, with her bag in her hand as she headed back upstairs to her new living quarters.

She was still livid about what Rane had done. The thought of his tongue against her skin made her want to go back and beat him to a pulp, but regardless, the first thing she wanted to do was take a bath—a long one.

Walking quickly, she headed straight to Cain’s floor, up the stairs and past the many guards that lined the hallways. The one thing they had in common, apart from the black uniforms they wore, was their light brown eyes and their huge statures, which made her look small even as she walked past them.

Still, they were the least of her concerns, even though she noticed how they seemed to have doubled, but she didn’t think too much about it as she headed into Cain’s room and straight past her door.

Tossing the bag she had with her on the ground and about to jump into the bathroom, she suddenly heard the huge doors of the room open and slam shut. Glad that she was yet to remove her clothes, she hurriedly stepped out to meet Cain, the only person she could think of who would boldly enter without so much as knocking.

"Lord Cain! Welcome back!" she said the second she stepped out, moving closer to him. Glad that she hadn’t dawdled, else she might not have made it back in time.

Violet was still waiting for him to speak when she felt him fix an intense gaze on her, his nose twitching even as his expression slowly darkened as he moved closer to her.

Violet was completely taken aback. One moment all was well, and the next, she watched his entire demeanor change as he openly glared at her.

Moving closer to stand with only a foot between them, he spoke, "You reek!" he said with a sneer, his eyes blazing with anger that seemed directed at her.

Instantly, Violet lowered her head. "I was just about to take my bath before you came. I can do that now!" she said, hoping to appease him, but it was almost like she set a fuse on whatever was eating him up.

A deeper frown appeared on his face as he continued to stare intensely at her, his eyes roving all over her, almost like he was looking for something, even though she had no idea what it could possibly be.

"I could—" she began to speak again, only to hear him interrupt in an icy tone she had never heard him use before.

"Follow me!" he ordered, moving towards his own bathroom even as he began walking, fully expecting Violet to obey—which she did.

Her heart thumped in fear at the anger she had seen brewing in his eyes. In any other situation, she would have cared that she was alone with him in the bathroom, but with the subtle trace of disgust she had seen in his eyes...the fact that she had been brought there terrified her.

It only got worse when he didn’t speak and instead took his coat off and hung it before settling by the side of the huge tub and slowly switching on the heater as she waited by the door.

"At least now I know why you had such a drab tone when I asked what kind of woman you like!" he said when he finally spoke, his words only confusing her more as she had no idea what he was talking about.

He didn’t expound on his words, and Violet was too scared to ask, as she watched him continue to sit there. His expression was blank as usual, but never had she seen him angrier—not even when she had seen him kill people.

’The fact is, I did something wrong! I just don’t know what I did!’ Violet thought, her heart thumping as a weird sort of silence suddenly settled between them. Violet watched him fix his gaze on the water heater, wondering what she had done wrong and, most importantly, what his new obsession with the water heater was.

She didn’t have to wait long to find out, as a few minutes later, he turned on the hot water tap and began to slowly fill up the tub. Her heart raced in her chest as she watched searing hot water accompanied by steam pour out.

’He wouldn’t!’ was the first thought that popped into her head as different forms of punishment began to flash across her mind. The only one that seemed to slowly dawn on her had to do with the hot water that kept pouring into the tub—especially when it became clear that he had no intention of adding any cold water.

Violet slowly found it hard to breathe as she opened her mouth to speak, stuttering a bit as she struggled to find the words.

"My-my lord! I have no idea what I-I’ve done, but I assure you—"

"You left the room, didn’t you?" he said, continuing without waiting for her to respond.

"There was no sign that you continued your assignment too. It appears that I’ve been too lenient on you, haven’t I?" His voice was soft, but he might as well have been holding a dagger to her throat.

The urge to drop to her knees was great, but she knew better than to make his anger worse. Tears filled her eyes, but again, she knew better than to let them fall.

"I took a break! I was tired and slept off for the first few hours before I went back to the servant quarters to grab the rest of my things!" she said, but Cain didn’t even look at her. His gaze remained fixed on the roaring hot tub of water, his hands gliding across the steam that hovered over it.
