Chapter 22: Taking on the Quest

Upon receiving the quest, Marcus left the guildmaster room and proceeded downstairs where he was met again with stares from the adventurers.

In the middle of the crowd stood Elaina who was seemingly waiting for his arrival.

"So you have been promoted, congratulations," she said.

"Yeah thanks to your recommendation, I got promoted and now I was given a quest that no one in this city seemingly can accomplish."

"The wyvern’s nest," Elaina simply said as if she knew where this was going.

"Yes."

"When are you going to leave?"

"It’s best that I leave promptly. It is an urgent matter and we can’t let yesterday’s event repeat."

Hearing that, Elaina’s cheek tightened slightly. Not fear, but tension. Her fingers brushed against the edge of her sleeve before she pulled them back to her side.

"That fast," she said. "You just got promoted."

"Doesn’t matter," he said. "They’re already active. If I wait, they spread."

Elaina nodded once.

"That’s true."

The noise in the hall slowly returned, but the eyes were still there. Some curious. Some doubtful. A few measuring him quietly.

Marcus didn’t pay them any attention.

"I’ll get the map this afternoon," he continued. "Once I have it, I head out."

Elaina looked at him for a second longer.

"You’re going alone."

"Yeah. I don’t think there’s anyone here who is capable of helping me. Since it’s all wyverns, they fight from the air and most of the adventurers’ are melee..."

"That sounds about right. This city doesn’t have much of a capable fighter. Most of them are in the capital. Which is why I’m glad that you are here."

Marcus smiled. "Your words are touching me a bit. Well, I have to get back to the inn and wait for that map."

Elaina nodded.

"I’ll have it prepared," she said. "Routes, elevation marks, and the last reported sightings. I’ll make sure it’s clear enough for you to move without wasting time."

Marcus gave a short nod.

"Good."

He shifted slightly, then turned toward the door. The crowd parted just enough to give him a path. No one spoke this time. They just watched.

He stepped out of the guild and into the street.

The city had returned to its usual rhythm, but not completely. A few damaged rooftops were still being repaired. Broken wood stacked along the sides of buildings. People talked in lower voices than usual.

Marcus walked past them without slowing.

He reached the Silver Stag a few minutes later and pushed the door open.

Inside, the inn was quieter than before. A couple of travelers sat near the window. The innkeeper looked up briefly, then gave a small nod of recognition.

Marcus went straight upstairs and then went to his room.

Inside, he planned on how he’ll kill the wyverns. The FIM-92 Stinger is an effective ground-to-air missile but he didn’t think it would be the right weapon for this mission. Why? Well in the nest, assuming if they are birds, the wyverns just casually perch along the cliff face, clustered together.

If he fired a Stinger into that, it would take one. Maybe two if they were close enough. The rest would scatter.

Then they’d be airborne and dive him all at once. He needed a weapon that was powerful enough to exterminate an entire cluster.

And there is only one arsenal he could think of, missiles. Like launched from the ground and packed a lot of punch.

He browsed for it in the shop tab from the system and found the entry.

M142 HIMARS — 60,000 MC

Of course he won’t stop there. Since he’ll have to manually operate the HIMARS, he’ll need to have another asset, an asset capable of locating the target from far away.

And he thought of a drone.

He scrolled down the list.

UAV category.

Several entries appeared. Small ones. Hand-launched. Limited range.

He skipped past them.

He needed something that could stay in the air longer. Something that could see far and stay stable.

He stopped.

RQ-7B Shadow — 12,000 MC

Endurance — up to 6 hours.

Operational range — 125 kilometers line-of-sight data link.

Cruise speed — around 70 knots.

Launch — rail-assisted, catapult system.

Recovery — arresting hook with tactical landing strip or net.

Payload — stabilized electro-optical and infrared camera turret.

Marcus read through the specifications twice.

Weight just over 170 kilograms fully loaded. Wingspan over 4 meters. Not something he could throw by hand.

But that didn’t matter.

He had the system.

He could deploy it anywhere with enough open ground.

"Okay, that should be it," Marcus said as he purchased it from the system.

And the moment he did that, the items were now in his inventory.

Now, it’s the waiting game.

Time passed.

When the shadows stretched longer across the street, he moved.

He stepped out of the room, went down the stairs, and left the inn without stopping.

Back to the guild.

The hall was busier than earlier. More adventurers had gathered near the boards. Conversations were louder now. The earlier tension had settled into something else—curiosity.

Marcus walked straight through it.

At the front desk, Elaina was already there.

She saw him before he spoke.

"You’re on time," she said.

Marcus stopped in front of the counter.

"Map ready?"

Elaina reached under the counter and pulled out a rolled parchment tied with a thin cord. The paper looked thicker than the usual quest slips.

"Prepared as requested," she said, handing it over.

Marcus took it and untied the cord.

He spread it open on the counter.

The map was hand-drawn but precise. Terrain lines marked elevation changes. The forest ridge stood out immediately—tight contour lines, steep gradients.

A red circle marked the suspected nesting area.

"Thank you, I shall get going now."

"Good luck out there, adventurer. And be careful, and come back safely," Elaina said.

"I will."
