Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 120: The Bewildering Embrace
At noon, Shane finished making lunch and went upstairs to wake her up: "Feeling better?"
Audrey Sutton rubbed her eyes, waking up to see him in front of her, still feeling a bit unreal about the scene.
"Come down and eat before you go back to sleep."
"Oh." She obediently responded, yawned, and sat up from the bed.
Shane glanced at her spaghetti strap nightdress. The nightdress was quite loose; the strap on her left shoulder had slipped down as she slept without her noticing, revealing her slender shoulder and a large expanse of fair skin on her chest.
"Ahem—" Shane cleared his throat softly, stood up, and said, "Get yourself together and come down quickly."
After speaking, when he turned around, he couldn’t help but sneak another quick glance before leaving the room.
The October autumn wasn’t too cold yet, so she just put on a coat and went downstairs.
Shane made rib soup; the other dishes were also very light.
Normally, if she saw food without chili, she’d probably pout in disdain, but today she hadn’t eaten breakfast and was definitely hungry. She took the chopsticks from Shane’s hand, picked up a bowl of rice, and immediately put a piece of rib into her mouth.
Shane, unhurriedly, poured her a bowl of soup and handed it to her: "Drink some hot soup, you’ll feel better."
Audrey looked at him with a smile in her eyes, feeling so happy at that moment.
Whether it was related to love or not, he really knew how to take care of people, and she enjoyed being looked after by him.
"I have to go to the office; I’ll probably be back around three. Once you finish eating, go back to bed and rest well."
Audrey bit her chopsticks, looked at him, and nodded obediently.
He put down his chopsticks, wiped his mouth, and said, "I’ll clear the table when I get back. Don’t touch the cold water."
Audrey nodded again, watching him take the coat from the chair. She asked, "Aren’t you going to eat?"
"No need, just leave the food unfinished. You finish the soup."
Audrey looked at the large bowl of soup, pursed her lips, but didn’t nod this time.
Shane put on his coat, changed shoes at the door, opened the door, and said to her, "If there’s anything you want to eat, send me a message on WhatsApp; I’ll buy it for you later."
Before Audrey could reply, he had already closed the door.
After Audrey was full, she thought about it and decided to pour out the soup she couldn’t finish down the drain.
Though she felt it was a bit wasteful, if she left it there, Shane would definitely nag her when he saw it.
She just put the bowl in the sink, wiped the table briefly, and went upstairs.
As soon as she opened the door, she heard her phone ringing, "Hello? Mr. Forrest? What’s up?"
"I’ve called you several times; where have you been? Nobody was answering."
Audrey smiled and explained, "I was eating downstairs, didn’t hear it."
"Do you have time today? I’m near your school now. Could you come out if it’s convenient? The poster still needs some adjustments."
"Sure, let’s meet at the Afternoon Time Café next to The Heritage Manor, how about 1:30?"
"Okay, I’m almost there, I’ll wait for you inside."
Audrey hurriedly took a shower, applied some makeup, changed into a burgundy knit dress, paired with short black boots, and rushed out.
Just past three, Shane returned after a meeting. As soon as he reached the entrance, he saw several fire trucks driving in.
The road was blocked, so his car couldn’t go forward. He found a parking spot nearby and walked over, only to discover a crowd gathered beneath their building with several fire trucks parked below.
Following the gaze of the onlookers, he saw thick smoke billowing out from a residence in the upper-middle part of the high-rise.
Shane estimated the floor and immediately had a bad premonition. He quickly searched around the crowd but couldn’t find Audrey’s figure.
Counting down from the top, the fire was in the apartment below theirs, but the wind had fanned the flames upward, and the fire was spreading.
The smoke was so thick that he couldn’t even see the balcony on his floor.
The fire was directly facing the balcony, and she might still be asleep in the bedroom or already fainted from the smoke.
This thought made Shane’s heart tighten. He quickly headed towards the building but was stopped by a firefighter evacuating residents at the entrance: "Sir, the fire hasn’t been controlled yet, you can’t go up now."
Shane anxiously said, "My wife is still upstairs; she might still be asleep because she wasn’t feeling well today!"
"Which floor does your wife live on?" 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
"The 21st floor, Room 2, just above the apartment on fire." No one had probably ever seen Shane so flustered and anxious.
Upon hearing this, the firefighter immediately informed his colleagues inside the building of the situation using a walkie-talkie.
"Sir, please wait in a safe place; we’ll do our best to ensure the safety of every resident."
Shane helplessly moved outside and stared at the growing fire, which seemed to have reached the 21st floor.
He waited anxiously, watching people come out of the building one after another, but he didn’t see Audrey for a long time. His unease grew, and he wished he could go up to check the situation himself.
His mind was in utter confusion, and only then did he belatedly take out his phone to call Audrey.
Just as he dialed her number, someone tapped on his shoulder, "What are you doing here? What’s going on?"
When Shane turned and saw her, without even thinking, he reached out and pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly.
His hold was so strong that Audrey felt a bit breathless.
She was stunned for quite some time, not understanding his unusual behavior.
Of course, she was reluctant to push him away, so she just let him hold her like that, inexplicably.
The call he’d made didn’t disconnect, and Audrey’s phone in her bag started ringing: "The person blown away by the wind says their love wasn’t deep, the person drenched by the rain says they won’t feel cold~"
It coincidentally provided a background music to the embrace.
"...What happened?" Audrey finally asked after a long while.
Shane released her, although grateful she was alright in front of him, he asked with a stern face, "Where did you run off to?"
Audrey, feeling guilty, glanced at him. Remembering the lesson from being in the newspapers last time, she didn’t dare lie to him and truthfully said, "Spencer Forrest asked me out to discuss the poster."
He looked at her without saying anything, his stare making Audrey nervous. She mumbled and added, "The details were finalized today, just one last modification. The movie releases next week, and I won’t be meeting up anymore!"
Shane took a deep breath but still didn’t say anything.
Audrey then sheepishly changed the topic: "Which house is on fire?"
After speaking, she pointed at the building, tilting her head back and counting the floors.
"Is our apartment on fire?!" she exclaimed, growing anxious: "General and Pea are still inside!"
Just as she spoke, a firefighter emerged from the building with a cat in his arms. As soon as General saw Shane, he ran over to them.
