My Demon Wife In The Apocalypse: I Can Control Minds!-Chapter 76 - 75- Scrutiny
Chapter 75- Scrutiny
"We don’t want to stay here! We are all going to die!!"
"Just let us in! Why are we trapped outside?!"
"You are trying to kill us! Murderers!"
The panic was of a level unseen since the start of the catastrophe. Everyone was angry and afraid, a mix that was a perfect recipe for disaster. Even with Luna keeping them under control with her strong presence and ability to lead, the situation was far from stable, and she could tell that.
The group is one small spark away from losing all reasoning, and when that happens, she can’t really talk them into staying calm. It was simply impossible to keep them from boiling and spilling everywhere.
’Where are you, Jack?’ She clenched her teeth as she stared into the distance.
"People aren’t going to accept this for long, Luna. They don’t want to stay outside at all." Evan approached her and said calmly in secret.
"I know. But getting them inside would only make the situation worse. There could be more hosts for those insects still hidden within the masses. We can only try our best to confirm before letting them all in." She replied as she sighed. "Either way, we won’t be able to fully stop this. It seems these things have already made their way into this base. They can be all around us for all we know."
Those Larvae were extremely small and hard to notice, so they could be everywhere waiting for a host to catch onto. Nobody here possessed the ability to scan the entire base in search of these things.
"... Do you think we would have to leave this place?" Evan asked.
"... I don’t know yet. We will have to wait for Jack and assess the situation."
If there is one person who can do something about it, it’s Jack. He is simply the strongest and possibly the most knowledgeable, so he can somehow find a solution, as he always does.
Almost 20 minutes passed in that boiling state, with the group trying their best to calm things down. Luna started worrying about her beloved as he was very late.
However, before she can start thinking about going to look for him, the boy emerges again in the base.
"Jack! Are you ok?" Luna was the first to rush to him upon seeing him. Her eyes immediately started inspecting his body, and then she sighed in relief when she saw no clear injuries. "What happ-"
Then, her eyes moved to his face, and she froze in a shocked state.
"Hm?" Jack noticed the odd change in her expression. "Is everything ok?"
"..."
"Luna? What’s wrong?" He asked again as he snapped his finger next to her ear.
"You... Ehem, you look a bit... different, Jack." She said as she looked away. "You look very different, actually."
"Different?" He raised an eyebrow as he instinctively stared at his own body. He didn’t notice any major changes in his physique as far as he can see. Perhaps he increased in height and his muscles became more defined, but that is something that is extremely hard to notice and wouldn’t give such a reaction.
"Different... I don’t think I changed much..."
"No, it’s not your body... It’s your face."
"Jack!"
At that moment, the rest of the group finally approached him.
"You’re fine! I’m glad you came ba-"
As they reached him, they all stopped and froze, all having the same comical reaction. At this point, Jack was completely confused. There was something wrong with him and it was clear.
"What is with you all and your reactions? Do I have something on my face?" He asked, a bit irritated.
"... W-What happened to you, Jack? You look completely different. It’s like a new person."
"Whoa! So handsome!" Emi exclaimed with a completely amazed look on her face.
"Handsome?"
"Your face, idiot. What happened to your face? You didn’t look like this 20 minutes ago." Evan said with a sigh as he facepalmed.
The boy blinked before he quickly pulled out his phone and opened the front camera. Almost immediately, he was met with a completely new face he wasn’t familiar with. Or, he was indeed familiar with it, but it just changed so much that for a second, he seemed like a different person.
Jack was an average-looking boy his entire life. He wasn’t ugly, nor ridiculously beautiful; he was rather pleasant to the eye, and that is the best compliment he could give himself. He never really cared about that, as looks for him were merely a facade.
Now, however, it was like he transformed. He was an incredibly handsome young man. His jawline was sharp and straight, his lips were full and perfect. His eyes became sharper and more seductive with longer eyelashes. His hair was now glistening and smooth like silk. His skin was now smooth and shiny, lacking any imperfections.
If he was an average boy before, then he was now an incredibly attractive young man. Someone you would see on television and in advertisements as a model or an actor.
"What the hell...?" Jack exhaled as he muttered to himself. His hand ran around his face, inspecting it. ’Wait... Is this because of evolution? Did my face change because of it?’
Remembering that black smudge that left his body, the idea suddenly clicked in his head. That weird substance must’ve been some sort of mechanism that rid his body of impurities or imperfections, and that could’ve caused his looks to improve greatly in such a fast manner.
However, even then, staring at his own reflection, it felt so odd. Like he was in a body that wasn’t his. He felt rather confused, but also a bit interested and curious.
’If this is what can change in me? How am I going to look when I reach the level of Liliana and other higher beings?’ He asked himself.
The answer was naturally, to have an otherworldly beauty. Just like the demoness whose beauty was enough to eclipse the sun itself. She had something no being on earth can ever possess... That was why Jack needed to become an otherworldly being himself to possess those qualities.
"Yeah, this could be because I just leveled up quite a bit. I have killed the queen." Jack said. "That thing turned out to be extremely strong. It gave me thousands of experience points and many stat points." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
"What?! Thousands?!" Alex blurted out. "The highest we killed was a few dozen exp at most!"
"Yeah, those things are possibly connected to the queen, and killing her either meant that they died or... That it was carrying something we don’t understand yet."
That was Jack’s only logical explanation for that. It didn’t seem to him that the Divine Records measured the queen’s importance based on her strength and rather... on her importance.
If something can be important to many, and they’re dependent on that thing, then killing it would naturally be equal to killing all of them. So, the weight of that kill equals the weight of killing an extremely strong enemy.
’At least that’s the best explanation I can come up with.’
"Jack?"
"Hm? What?"
"Did you kill those things too?" Luna asked.
"No. When I killed the queen, they all quickly turned around and ran away... They possibly went back to the nest, I don’t know." He replied. "But, I’m certain this isn’t the end. Something is going to happen very, very soon."
"We have to get ready then. We can’t sit idly and wait."
"Yes, I agree with Alex. We can’t just wait for them to come and kill us. We can fight."
"Sigh... Foolishly jumping into a fight we would inevitably lose is not a wise idea. We need to understand how we can effectively eradicate them without dying ourselves."
"Do you have any idea how we can do that?"
"I... need to think about it a bit longer." Jack hesitated for a moment before he looked up. "What is the situation in the base?"
"... It’s, not good."
"We are barely able to contain the people."
"Hm, really?"
Saying that, the boy walked past his group and headed into the open field. Upon appearing there, everyone stared at him for a second.
"It’s him!"
"There you are, bastard!"
"Explain yourself! Why did you kill that old lady?!"
"My son! Where did my son go?!"
"We need an explanation."
The entire place erupted in yells and complaints. People were angry, extremely so. They didn’t understand what happened, and the only person who seemingly figured it all out was Jack. Yet, he refused to explain, and on top of that, he killed innocent people before their eyes.
There, for the first time, Jack saw the kinds of looks he was getting. Anger, and even hatred. Even though it seemed like something bound to happen, he was still a bit surprised.
This was truly the first time in his life when he was rejected by others. Someone who was so ordinary that he never made enemies... Was faced with the eyes of scrutiny.
