My Unrestrained Lives-Chapter 39: Poison
Walking around this shabby... no, eerie palace to inspect it, with the accompaniment of Brunna, the other maid who came with her, Grenda was still trying to forget the earlier experience she had gone through.
Her mind was absent, her face blank, but Brunna, seemingly not noticing that, suddenly expressed her worry and said, "Are we really going to kill the prince?"
"Even though he’s this small?"
She seemed to falter in her decision, as she suddenly felt sorry for the prince, who was still just a child.
On the other hand, Grenda, who came back to her senses when she heard her, immediately glared at her and said, "What do you mean, killing? We’re just here to execute the orders we were given... nothing more, nothing less."
"No matter what happens to him, it doesn’t have anything to do with us."
Brunna, pursing her lips at what she heard, said, "But we’re the ones poisoning him. With our own hands."
Grenda, trying not to snap at her companion, especially now, when she was already on edge, patiently said, "Again, what do you mean by poison? We’re just giving him medicine!"
Brunna seemed intent on saying more... She, who had actually come here eagerly, even knowing what kind of task awaited her, suddenly started to pity the prince. She seemed to find a passion from somewhere. And noticing that, Grenda finally snapped. In a loud voice, she said... no, pleaded:
"Please. What do you want me to do then?"
"We can’t change anything, even if we go back now!"
"And in the first place, is it our fault that he’s being targeted?"
"No, it’s not!"
"It’s his mother, who didn’t know her place and started meddling in things above her!"
"It’s him, who, rather than living quietly, started hanging around with the Royal Knight Commander, seemingly wanting to become a knight... when he should have known his position."
Grenda hesitated at that last part.
She pondered whether he really didn’t understand the kind of position he was in.
But, in the end, she knew that it wasn’t something someone like her had the right to judge... not after she met him.
So, she just continued.
"So, please... just don’t say anything more."
"Let’s spend this one month peacefully, and then go back."
Grenda, at this moment, really didn’t plan to do anything more than administer poison in the prince’s food.
Her plans to harass and bully him... to do many more things in hopes of earning extra points from the head maid, had all vanished.
At this moment, all she wanted was to go back... safely.
And seeing that... how Grenda, famous for her nasty personality, was at the edge right now, Brunna stayed silent.
But while she didn’t say anything back this time, she still had other thoughts.
She thought that someone who had volunteered for this role, and was going to be rewarded later, couldn’t possibly have no other choice.
’But... if he’s going to die anyway... maybe it really is better that I get some benefit, right?’
And so, while each was lost in her own thoughts, they silently continued walking.
...
Still in his room, Ellis, who had just finished hearing the full story from Silas, along with the conversation that had taken place between the two maids, couldn’t help but sigh.
His mother, whom he had met just once when arriving in this world, seemed intent on bringing him trouble.
He had no doubt that she was the reason he was in this situation, after all.
Him, trying to become a knight, according to the maids?
That wasn’t something worth making a fuss about.
If anything, it would lower his value instead of raising it.
So, if this assassination attempt had any deeper cause, then the actions of his mother were likely at the root of it.
But what did she do? What did she meddle in?
... Was it related to those balls she had been attending so frequently?
He wondered, as even he had heard the rumors of her recent lifestyle.
Had she made connections there? And through them... did something?
... Could it be that she interfered in the struggle for the crown prince’s seat? Perhaps by supporting another prince?
He still couldn’t be sure.
But at this moment, Ellis couldn’t help but wonder whether she was even safe, because if they had sent someone after him, then wasn’t it likely they had already sent someone after her too?
... But who was he worrying about, really?
His current situation, even if it didn’t reach the worst possible outcome, was already something he couldn’t easily slip away from.
And if he also tried to help his mother?
Then he was sure, things would only spiral further worst.
Most of all, he didn’t feel close enough to her to justify risking his own safety.
And he still wasn’t even sure her situation was truly bad, maybe she had the help of some strong prince, after all.
So, no... it really wasn’t worth it to try reaching out to her and drawing more attention to himself.
But, despite every reason Ellis tried to convince himself with, he still couldn’t feel comfortable.
He wondered why he always ended up in situations like this.
And he couldn’t help but feel dejected.
As he continued thinking about his mother, unable to shake the feeling that, despite everything, she had still given birth to him, Ellis suddenly remembered Galen, the Royal Knight Commander.
Should he try asking him for help?
He was the only one who might have the power to support him in his current situation... and maybe, even ensure his mother’s safety.
But... would he really interfere?
As Ellis recalled the time he had spent with him, he couldn’t help but feel doubt.
Despite his seemingly affable attitude, Galen hadn’t assigned even one knight to guard him.
He had also apologized when Ellis asked about how to heal Silas’s injury.
His excuse was that he didn’t know how her injury could be healed...
But was that really true?
