New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 624: The first husband’s assurance [2]
"He didn’t say he likes me." Coco defended herself, her hand twitching in Zaque’s.
She wanted to pull away from him, to protect herself from being prodded with the truth, but the mediator’s hand merely tightened around hers.
"I’m pretty sure that he did say he likes you." Zaque rebutted, humming.
"He didn’t." Coco insisted, her eyes squinting as she got dragged into the side when a carriage galloped by. "He also didn’t show any sign that he likes me, so how was I supposed to know?"
"He did." Zaque also insisted, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "You’re just dense."
"I’m not." Coco denied, her lips forming a straight as she averted her gaze away from the mediator who raised an eyebrow and stared at her.
"Really?" Zaque tilted his head and tugged her closer to him. "Then, did you know that I was the first to like you? Did you know that I liked you longer than Alhai did?"
He did? Coco thought, beads of sweat forming in her forehead.
She fought hard to make her face as neutral and normal looking as possible, but one look in Zaque’s face made her realize that he already knows the truth.
"It’s fine." Zaque mumbled, stopping in his tracks for a moment and leaned down. "It’s one of the reasons why I love you. You’re dense, but awfully true to yourself, so who am I to complain? You’re you and that’s enough."
Coco’s heart fluttered in her chest, her breath caught in her throat when Zaque suddenly leaned closer.
The mediator didn’t think twice to press his lips against hers, soft and steady, pouring the love he has been feeling since he first laid his eyes on her at the bakery.
Zaque pulled away after a moment, but he didn’t lean away too far and let his lips brush against hers.
"We’re fine with Kairo becoming one of us." He assured Coco for the nth time. "Of course, it’s still up to you if you’re going to accept him or not."
The fact that Coco was scared of hurting him and her other mediators were enough to tell him that she loves them more than she let on, and the fact that she would rather keep Kairo at bay if they weren’t sure about letting him in also spoke volumes.
It makes him want to give her another mediator, all because he knows that Coco wouldn’t neglect him and play favorites.
"What about the others?" Coco asked, her eyes welling up with tears. "What if they are not okay with it and just going with the flow? What if they were smiling even though they’re hurting?"
The thought of loving more than one person was difficult.
Coco came from a world where a monogamous relationship is a must and is normal, so this whole polygamous relationship thing with the mediators is driving her crazy.
She knew that there was some culture that allows one man to have several wives, but that was the only case for men, right?
I’m not educated enough for this. Coco sniffled, her tears rolling down her cheeks.
Zaque was quick to reach out, struggling a little bit because he’s carrying the paper bag, and wiped her tears with the back of his finger. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
He doesn’t like seeing her cry, especially when her husbands is the reason.
"Coco.." Zaque murmured, his eyes softening at the sight of her tears. "Are we putting too much pressure on you? I’m sorry. We only wanted the best for you.."
I know. Coco wanted to say, but her tears stopped her from doing so.
Zaque could only pull Coco aside and wrap his arm around her, pressing her face into his chest and letting her cry into him.
He would like to bring her home and surround her with blankets to comfort her, but with his friends and her mother being at the house— surely waiting for them, he knows that it would be impossible to do so.
"Cry it out." Zaque mumbled, tightening his arm around her and leaning down to press a kiss on the crown of her head. "I’m sorry. I’m really sorry."
Zaque doesn’t know what could be difficult about deciding on letting Kairo become a family, but he knows that Coco came from a different world than theirs.. So that must be one of the reasons why she’s having difficulty, right?
Zaque stared at Coco’s trembling form for a moment before frowning and shifting his gaze up in the sky.
The afternoon sky is already starting to become dark with a mix of pink, yellow, and orange.
It’s getting late. Zaque knew it, but he didn’t want to pick up Jacques’ and Renaldo from their home with Coco feeling down like this.
Even if they were her friends, it’s not something they should be probing their noses into.
"If you’re not okay with Kairo becoming your husband, then I understand." Zaque mumbled, keeping his voice low and quiet so no passerby would be able to hear him.
He made sure that it was only Coco who could hear his voice, whispering right next to her ear.
"The others will understand, too." Zaque quickly added because he knows Coco’s tendency to overthink things that she shouldn’t be overthinking. "They won’t be upset or disappointed, or whatever you think they might feel."
Coco let out a sniffle, the sound tugging at his heart strings.
"They will understand as well." The mediator said, turning his head to the side to press his lips on the side of her head. "So don’t worry too much, Coco."
If she doesn’t want another, then that’s fine. They will just have to explain the situation to Kairo and apologize for making his hopes up, knowing full well that Kairo will move out.
A sudden movement from Coco made Zaque snap out of his thoughts and he looked down, his eyes catching sight of Coco wiping her tears by rubbing her face into his clothes.
Zaque blinked, finding her action adorable.
