Chapter 664: Coats

Coco nodded, even when confusion furrowed her brow and covered her whole sense of reasoning.

She warily stepped out of the wagon and approached the crates, her eyes lingering on them before glancing back at her mother.

"What are these for, mama?" Coco asked, tilting her head.

However, Cleora didn’t answer and instead, she flipped open one of the crate lids with practiced ease and revealed what was inside.

Coats.

Furry, thick, and meticulously stitched— clearly designed for harsh weather. High-quality, expensive material and there were a couple of them folded carefully on each crate.

Coco blinked.

"Put one on, Coco." Cleora hummed and grabbed one coat from the crate. "All of you. Wear one."

Jacques and the others shared a glance, unsure of what the older woman was planning, but she hasn’t done anything bad so far.. So, they decided to just get it done with.

It was Zaque who went out of the wagon first, then Quizen, Heiren, and Kairo followed suit.

Alhai and the others were reluctant, but once they saw Zaque was already picking a coat he would like to claim, they got off as well.

Coco pulled on the coat, immediately appreciating the way it enveloped her frame in warmth— thick, luxurious fur lining brushing against her skin.

It was oversized and was covering her from neck down to her ankles, but she found herself loving the way it hugged her frame, shielding her from the prying of other people.

Those who don’t want to be found out they’re pregnant.. The coat would be the best thing to have.

Brushing off the invisible dust from her shoulders, she eyed the way the others had scrambled out of the wagon to choose a coat of their liking and watching, she couldn’t help, but wonder why they would need a coat. It wasn’t even that cold—

Then she exhaled.

A puff of visible breath curled into the air, smoke-like, misty, dissipating into the cold air, and seeing it made her eyes wide in realization.

It’s cold.

She whipped her head around, only to truly notice the biting chill in the air— the way the black roses had a faint layer of frost clinging to their petals, the way the trees seemed to loom darker, heavier.

It was not just chilly, not just brisk, but a deep, biting cold that seeped into her bones the moment she noticed it.

*She looked around again, and this time, she looked ahead.

The road led into a snow-laden forest.

"We move in five, everyone." Cleora called, her voice echoing slightly and leaving no room for argument.

Coco swallowed hard and spun around her heels, letting her gaze linger on Cleora as she strode toward the other wagon, her steps brisk and short, as if she was in a hurry.

Midway to the wagon, a knight that was bundled in a thick, fur-lined coat had met her and wordlessly handed over another thick dark coat.

Without hesitation, Cleora tugged it on, the heavy fabric swallowing her frame instantly.

The sight of her mother casually slipping on a coat and didn’t seem like she was bothered by the cold made Coco believe that the north— like on any other stories and back on earth, are cold.

If I think about it.. I think her territory is like the countries that are often covered in snow? Coco thought as she turned away and glanced back at her own group.

Heiren was already fastening his coat, his fingers nimble despite the cold, then beside him, Quizen stood still as Alhai adjusted the collar of his coat for him, while Jacques and Jonathan helped each other secure theirs.

Zaque was at the farthest side of the bunch, his expression unreadable as he shrugged into his coat with a huff.

On the corner of her eye, she noticed that Renaldo was the first to finish dressing.

He was already standing near her and the change in his appearance was immediately noticeable— because the burly man was already terrifying in stature, but now, swathed in the thick coat.. He seemed to stand out even more.

It was almost comical with how the way a massive mountain of a man somehow became even larger with a piece of clothing.

Honestly, he looked more bear than man. Coco hummed to her as she stared at her friend.

With the way how Renaldo stood taller than her husbands, it was such a wonder how he was able to sit still inside the wagon for hours.

It must have hurt—

Renaldo glanced up, catching Coco’s gaze and she realized she might have been staring a little longer than she intended.

She fought the urge to laugh, plastering a neutral expression on her face. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Renaldo raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes when he caught sight of the twitching corner of Coco’s lips.

"You alright?" The mediator asked, his voice gruff.

Coco quickly nodded, clearing her throat and thinking of the most believable excuse she could muster to shake off Renaldo.

"Yes, sorry. Just.. Admiring the coats." she mumbled as she gestured towards the others, fighting the urge to snicker. "All of you look amazing in one."

Renaldo studied her for a moment, fondness and exasperation evident in his gaze.

He shook his head slightly, a ghost of a smile on his face, which made Coco flinch because she knew that she was already caught lying through her teeth.

"What a terrible liar." Renaldo huffed, his voice low and amused. "Can barely keep a straight face."

"Hey!" Coco protested weakly, her gaze dropping as she frowned. "I was trying my best, you know? Besides, I wasn’t lying. All of you do look good."

Renaldo merely chuckled under his breath before turning away with a dismissive wave of his hand.

"Whatever you say." He laughed, already lumbering back toward the wagon. "I’ll go back inside first."

Coco watched him and suppressed a giggle because his bulky coat made him look more like a walking fur boulder than a man.
