Chapter 43: Repossession of property

Mr. Smith had been refusing to go out or even visit Ashley. To him, they were all a bunch of useless people who had failed him at every turn. He felt as though everything he had carefully planned over the years was slipping out of his control, crumbling piece by piece right before his eyes.

"I need to make a better plan," he muttered to himself, pacing the living room with restless steps.

"One even Raymond cannot interfere with."

He had been at home all day, sunk deep in thought, contemplating what his next move should be, when a sudden knock sounded on the door.

Mr. Smith froze. He chose to ignore it at first, hoping whoever it was would get tired and leave. But the knocking persisted, growing louder and more deliberate, as though the person outside was determined not to be ignored.

Annoyance flared. With a scowl, he stormed toward the door and yanked it open.

Mr. Smith’s voice boomed the moment the door swung wide.

"You better have a good explanation for knocking on my door nonstop," he snapped angrily.

Standing right outside were two men dressed in black suits, both wearing dark sunglasses despite the lack of sunlight. Their expressions were unreadable, their posture stiff and professional.

Mr. Smith narrowed his eyes at them suspiciously, his instincts screaming danger.

"My name is Jamie Roberts," one of the men said

calmly. "I work with Mr. Black. My colleague and I represent the Robertson Law Firm."

"From Vegas City, I presume?" Mr. Smith asked sharply.

"Yes, you are correct," Jamie replied.

Mr. Smith raised his brow in surprise, a slow feeling of dread beginning to gnaw at his chest. His fingers tightened around the edge of the door.

"Are you the occupant of this property?" Jamie

asked, his tone neutral but firm.

"Yes, I am," Mr. Smith answered defensively. "Why are you here, and what does Mr. Black want with me?"

"Mr. Black contacted us to represent a friend by the name Lena Smith," Jamie explained.

"According to her complaint and the information we gathered, there is an illegal occupant residing in her property. Based on the ownership documents, she has the legal right to remove anyone from it. Since there is no binding legal agreement or verbal permission granting you residence here, she is entitled to revoke your occupancy." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Mr. Smith’s eyes widened.

"The court has already verified the documents provided by our client and found them to be original and legitimate," Jamie continued. "A case has been filed to have the illegal occupant ejected from the property before the end of the week. If, by then, the occupant, which happens to be you, fails to comply, we will be forced to use other legal means to enforce the eviction."

"What?" Mr. Smith exclaimed, his voice rising in shock.

"I’m Lena’s father!" he shouted. "I’ve lived here since she was born. How dare she try to eject me? Her mother would be turning in her grave at how unfilial she has become."

His voice cracked as emotions surged.

"You tell that bitch to come face me directly," he continued angrily. "I’m not leaving this place. Not after my wife and I suffered to build this company and this house, only for her to throw me out immediately after my wife died."

Tears formed in his eyes, though rage burned hotter than his grief.

"She even refused me entrance after my wife’s death," he went on bitterly. "She claimed it was her mother’s last wish that I should never step foot in the company again. I bet she bribed that lawyer to add that lie to the will."

Jamie looked at him with open disgust. If not for Raymond’s direct involvement, he wouldn’t have bothered coming all the way from Vegas City to deal with such a petty case. Still, orders were orders.

"I don’t care about your relationship with my client," Jamie said coldly. "Any grievances or emotional appeals should be addressed to her through proper legal channels. Any attempt at force, harassment, or intimidation will land you in court. And trust me, you won’t leave without jail time."

He paused briefly before adding, "If I were you, I would quietly move my belongings out before the weekend."

"I don’t have anywhere to go," Mr. Smith blurted out, agitation clear in his voice.

At that moment, he realized the lawyers weren’t playing. He stopped whining and complaining, understanding that the men before him were emotionless and cared only about the law. With the number of illegal things he had done in the past, things that could earn him a death sentence, he couldn’t afford unnecessary attention.

"That is not our concern," Jamie replied flatly. "We are only here to pass information from our client. What you do afterward has nothing to do with us."

He pulled out a document. "Here is the eviction letter from the court. The reason our client chose to repossess the house is clearly stated."

Jamie took out a stapler and firmly attached the notice to the wall beside the door before turning away.

"Is there nothing I can do?" Mr. Smith asked desperately. "I’m her father."

Jamie didn’t even bother to respond. He simply walked away with his companion.

If Raymond hadn’t warned him about how terrible this man was, Jamie might have felt a shred of pity. Then again, it wouldn’t have mattered. He was a lawyer, after all. They got into their car and drove off without looking back.

Mr. Smith stood frozen, struggling to process what had just happened. Then his anger exploded.

"That bitch is growing wings by the day since she met Mr. Black," he snarled. "I should have killed her back then. Was it not enough that she cut off my debit cards? Now she wants me to leave this house too," he burst out laughing darkly. "Dream on"

Consumed by fury, he began destroying everything in sight. Chairs toppled, vases shattered, and picture frames smashed against the floor until the house became scattered and uninhabitable.

"How did this happen?" he screamed at the top of his lungs. "The company is mine! This house is mine! I cannot give my all and lose everything in return."

Eventually, exhaustion forced him to calm down. It was then he realized Selena was unaware of the recent developments. Deciding to see Ashley instead, luckily he has some hidden cash at hand and some in a secret account. So he took some of the cash he had stashed away and left for the hospital.

With help from the receptionist, he located Ashley’s room. He bought a get-well card, fruits, and flowers on the way. As he looked at how much he had spent to visit someone who was partly responsible for his downfall, his face twisted in resentment.

She never followed instructions properly, always dragging them deeper into problems they could barely escape.

By the time he reached the door, his face had darkened completely, his suppressed anger rising once more, ready to erupt.

He pushed the door open, and what greeted him made his steps falter. It was the most unbelievable sight he had ever seen. Ashley’s face was jagged and brutally maligned, ugly scars stretching across skin that once held nothing but youth and softness. For a brief moment, the anger burning in his chest shifted, twisting into resentment, resentment directed squarely at Lena.

Without saying a word, he walked in quietly and took a seat. The boys who had been chatting moments earlier fell silent immediately, their eyes fixed on him with cautious curiosity. The room grew tense, heavy with unspoken thoughts.

He found a place and sat down, feeling their stares but choosing to ignore them.

"I’m sorry I didn’t come to see you sooner," he said after a pause, his voice low. "I wasn’t in the right state of mind." Swallowing his pride, he directed the apology to Ashley.

Ashley blinked, clearly surprised. For a moment, she couldn’t find her words.

"It’s... okay," she finally stammered. "I’m already better now."

Mr. Smith nodded slowly, his gaze drifting back to the scars on her face. He studied them openly, then briefly sneaked a glance at Selena, who stood quietly beside the bed.

"I didn’t know the scars were this bad," he admitted, genuine shock etched across his face.

"What happened?" he asked, despite already having a faint idea. Truthfully, he was only trying to make small talk. He didn’t know how to start a real conversation with Selena after everything that had happened between them.

Ashley explained carefully, deliberately leaving out the most embarrassing details. Mr. Smith noticed, of course, but chose not to call her out. When he was certain he had said enough to console her, he promised to deal with Lena. He even handed Ashley the gift he had bought for her earlier. Her face lit up instantly, and her smile eased some of the heaviness in his chest.

Seeing her happiness, he decided it was time to talk to Selena and get it over with.

He reached out to hold Selena’s hand, but she turned her face away. Still, he noticed she had softened, and he snickered inwardly.

Ashley was still her weak point. He began apologizing tactically, choosing his words carefully so Ashley wouldn’t understand. He noticed Selena’s thick makeup, proof she didn’t want Ashley to see her own injuries, and silently agreed it was for the best.

After a few vague apologies, Selena finally relaxed. He promised to apologize properly in private later.

Ashley blushed, misunderstanding entirely. She thought they intended to take things further, unaware of what Mr. Smith truly meant.

When he noticed they were all smiling and in a good mood, he dropped the bombshell, telling them about the house and Lena’s plan to repossess the property.

"Bitch," Selena and Ashley said at the same time, shock evident on their faces
