Chapter 73: 73. A Group Trifle

73. A Group Trifle

Unknown to Garult and Elise the two others in their party had been planning to kill them and take the loot all to themselves. From the onset they were not fools to party up with others for no reason, they chose to join the nameless head party because of the fact that it had only one fighter in the group.

They could kill the healer with ease and then focus on the only fighter. No matter how they saw it two contenders in which one was an archer and wind mage and the other an earth mage who focused on attacks against a meager swordsman, it was just too good an offer to pass off. They would even get the party name as a bonus. This was the world of adventurers where betrayers lurked at every turn.

Garult was surprised as Larius attacked his healer at the same time his hands and legs were incased in locks of earth that acted as bindings. He did not flinch in this situation and instead gritted his teeth and looked at Deet. "You really can’t trust folks these days, can you?"

Deet pulled apart a clump of earth from the ground and moulded it at an astonishing rate. "Likewise."

Garult smirked, he had anticipated this earlier. He noticed it during the fight after he had been knocked back. Aside from the fact that they used their magic to an even greater degree than they initially let on there was one mistake they had done. While facing off the beast they attacked from both sides in a synchronized manner that was too perfect for a couple of first timers. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

He had been cautious since then.

"Do you know how hard it will be to find a good healer now, and I wanted her to be my plaything before I killed her. Pity, pity." Garult smiled as he sprang forward and broke all of his confines, in one swift motion he reached for his sword and deflected the stone spike aimed at him.

Deet sensed the danger immediately, swordsnen were like crazy bullets that zipped around wildly during battle. He raised his hand to form an earth wall and wait for Larius return only to see a flash of light severing half his palm off his right hand. Pain shot like a geyser in Deet’s head as he drew back. It all happened so crazily fast, in that moment he knew Garult was holding back. He thought if he had also planned on killing them, if not why else was he holding back?

Deet knew that this was not the right time to ask questions. He kicked the ground causing it to explode and propel him backwards by a few meters.

Garult stood there with a crazed smile on his face as he brought the blade to his face and licked the portion of blood on it with ecstacy. "I missed, damn I wonder if I’m getting rusty."

Their entire exchange had happend in no less than five seconds and Deet was not fooled by such ploys, he felt like he had just angered a true beast and master of the hunt. Whatever that was going to progress further was halted by the scream of Elise. Both their eyes shot up with confusion, they had clearly seen the blood earlier and if Elise was alive then she was not the one who bled. And since they both knew that she never partook in fights so she clearly did not hurt Larius. So what was happening.

They both looked to see Elise on her back on the grass, her apparel covered in stains of blood standing over her was Larius with the blade still in his hand but he was headless. Deet and Garult were both terrified of what had happened in short a short moment in time.

Earlier as Larius brought down his blade for her face she felt helpless and defneseless, it was a feeling she had grown accustomed to. All her life she wished for someone who could protect her when she needed protection, was that not why she had joined the adventures guild. But this was the end, the final curtain to a poorly lived life.

What she thought was her life flashing before her eyes was actually the shine of a blade line that went through Larius head, it happened so fast that she never saw it. Did that mean someone had saved her? Had the divine goddess heard her prayer and sent her champion of fire and songs to save her?

A second later the head of Larius slid off her body and plopped down on her lap covering her in more blood. Staring at the revolting sight she kicked the head away and jump back just as a loud shriek escaped her mouth.

It was at this moment that Deet and Garult looked at her. Not long after there was a scuffle in the bushes as the one who was responsible for Larius great departure stepped out of the bushes to be revealed to be a figure covered in black apparel and having an orange scarf around the neck.

The two of them did not need to be told what this was, the words escaped their lips. "Shit, it’s a beast kin."

Earlier Eryndor who had been having a quiet nap on the top of the hill was awakened by the loud roar of a wild beast at first he ignored it and wanted to rest further but shortly after it persisted. He mistook this for a dying beast and, he jumped up in glee.

"Yay, food." He said happily as he darted off down the hill in the direction of the forest. He had no idea where the noise came from but he had his trusty eyes in the sky and King’s nose to find it eventually. Driven my his lust for meat Eryndor was oblivious to the fact of what had transpired in the forest. Neither did he know how dangerous the forest truly was or that it was the territory of the beast people and they did not take well to visitors.
