Chapter 29: Only for a while

Kain Locke

"What in the hell is going on? What are these?" Mateo screamed as he backed away, his eyes not leaving the sight in front of us.

"Damned snakes!" The other two screamed out of the awareness that just dawned on them.

The moment Mateo reached the door he tried opening earlier, he pushed at it with even greater strength but it refused to bulge.

So there’s basically no way out of here unless it was through the front door, which definitely must be a bad idea right now due to the fact that the beast must be everywhere outside to prevent any escape.

And when Mateo was backed against the locked door with nowhere to go, he turned, cocking his gun, ready to shoot.

But he can’t do that because that was also among the mistakes we made back then, so, "Stop! You can’t kill them with that!" I shouted in warning, but he didn’t listen as he pulled the fire.

The gun fired. The bullet flew and hit one of them within seconds, and suddenly, flames burst to life, not the kind of flames that burns, but the snake beast that should drop down on the firing of the gun not only did not, but the sound of the gun seemed to enrage them more. Followed by the room exploding into chaos as the snakes hissed and lunged even faster toward us.

I was blindly reaching for the daggers I tucked in my thighs belt given that, gun is incapable of killing these beasts, you can only land a fatal blow up close which could be more fatal for the attacker.

So I was already planning on how to go about it, but before they could reach us, a bright green light flicked on suddenly from every corner of the room and the ceiling. Making it feels like deep green gas was released into the air.

Surprisingly the snakes who were just a few meters away from us stopped in their tracks. Their bodies trembled, their eyes twisting in agony.

Then, the earlier locked door burst open. And a voice rang out from the other side.

"Hurry! The light won’t hold them for long! Get in here before they break free!"

I didn’t waste a moment as I rushed towards the door and entered, followed by Mateo and the rest.

The door slammed shut the moment we were in and she pressed some numbers on the password button, the lock slammed into place and then she heaved a breath, her back bending and hands falling in her laps.

"Bella?" I called unsure, looking at the lady in front of us who has her hair tied into a bun and has a scarf wrapped around her head. She was also wearing glasses, and her white lab coat could sweep the floor at how long they were.

She lifted her face at the hearing of that name, it’s really her. It’s Bella.

"What the actual fuck is going on in here! I clearly shot that motherfucker... Why didn’t it die? Why was it still alive after being shot?" Mateo screamed with frustration, kicking at the door angrily.

"That’s because it will only make them angry! Tell me who the heck throws flames at a snake mutated beast and expect them to die? What are you? A kid! Or a fool!?" Bella burst out with annoyance.

Mateo’s face turned ashen after hearing Bella say that, he growled and lunged, his hand shooting out to grab Bella’s undershirt.

However, before he could touch her, she caught his wrist mid-air. Her eyes burned as she twisted his arm and slammed him against the wall. He let out a sharp grunt, his face twisting in pain at the impact.

"You don’t attack me! Try that again," she said coldly, pressing harder, "and I won’t hesitate to open that door and throw you to them."

Damn. She was fast. She always has quick reflexes anyway.

"Bitch!" He spat the moment she let go of him.

"Call me that one more time or I’ll fucking kick your ass."

This matter is escalating quickly, and with the rate it was, they would be ripping each other’s throat in no time.

Bella is allergic to insults and arrogant people, while Mateo has plenty of such qualities, so I had to do something.

I jumped between them, holding both hands out, "Stop this at once, Bella, Mateo, this isn’t the right time to be at each other’s throat like kids, out there were snakes that were so ready to fill their belly with us and tear us apart, yet, instead of worrying about how to get out of here, you’re doing this? Really?" 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Tell him!" She growled, and scoffed right after, removing the glasses, crushing it and throwing it away.

I sighed exasperatedly and pushed them into separation, I guess my words reminded them of the real danger as the room fell into silence, they retreated to the opposites corners, Bella pressing her back against the wall for a while, before peering through the little transparent hole on the door, "They recovered already." She announced.

"I thought the light could restrain them..." the beta who drove the car here trailed off with widening eyes.

"Only for a while." She answered simply.

"Then how do we get out of here?" My attention was on Bella as I asked desperately.

She slid down the door, "I don’t know, the door is locked, they stopped working except this one... I’m stuck— we’re stuck here." She corrected, "Why are you guys here anyway?" Her gaze snapped up again.

"On a mission. And... weren’t you also supposed to be on a mission as well?" I asked, confused, considering Audrey had told me she was sent on a mission. Thinking about it, she shouldn’t be alone right? "Where are the rest? I mean your teammates?" I questioned.

Her eyes dimmed as she sighed, looking up at me with red eyes. "They died. They all died... and there’s no assurance that we’ll also be getting out of here alive."
