Chapter 39: Fun

Kain Locke

My eyes locked with Alec’s. The same quietness surrounded him, just like the first time I saw him in the hall during my homecoming. Back then, I hadn’t suspected anything, although I noticed how people instinctively avoided the space beside him. And now, seeing it happen again, I realized that this definitely must not be the first time and by the look of things, he must be used to it.

He looked slightly different from the last time I saw him.

I tore my gaze away, breaking the trance. My skin still crawled at the memory of that day, his frenzied expression, those wild, possessed-looking eyes. I don’t want to think about it.

"Listen up!" one of the instructors called out, bringing my attention back to him. I almost forgot we’re called here for a reason.

"Move closer, you’re not here to chatter idly, so come on, closer."

People grumbled, but nevertheless moved closer to where they were standing,

The Beta Instructor’s eyes scanned the crowd for a little while then he cleared his throat and began to say, "Information is just reaching us today. Like you all know, our current location is not fixed due to the different occurrences, causing the shift, from the island to the hotel, and now here, a temporary residence which was meant to be our hideout, therefore staying here has always been for a while. Thus, we’re moving back to the old base. Repairs are already done to fix the nightbeasts wreckage and other places on the island."

A few people muttered and groaned, but none of them dared to voice out their concern or anger, but despite that, some still appeared to be relieved, some were indifferent.

And in all sincerity, I wasn’t sure how to feel about it myself. The old base was familiar, but familiar didn’t always mean safe like the rest of it, be it a permanent or a temporary one.

"To celebrate," the instructor continued, "you’re all going on a nice little jog up the hill. And here’s the fun part of it. Treasure hunting."

He stopped talking and swept his eyes around us for a very short while and continued, "They say, there are treasures up there, shining like black diamonds when dusk hits. If you can climb higher than anyone ever has, you just might find one."

The already dead murmuring started again as people muttered their displeasure.

Someone scoffed. "Treasure on the hill? Seriously?"

Another Omega groaned, "This is just another excuse to wear us out."

"How the heck are we supposed to find something that might just be a rumor." Another person added while a few others muttered curses under their breath.

The instructor grinned, like he was enjoying our reactions. "Just a heads up, be back before 8 PM because you don’t know what might just be hiding under those hill stones, and be sure you don’t come back empty-handed." he emphasized on the last sentence making a lot of people, me included, uneasy.

"But it’s not safe out here at night," someone protested.

"It’s not safe anywhere." he said with a little grin

And then, like he hadn’t just said something vaguely threatening, he clapped his hands together. "Alright, enough standing around. Get to it already, the day is running out fast. Oh, and one more thing if anything happens to you out there, that’s on you. You fall, get lost, get hurt? Tough luck. No one’s coming to save you." he concluded with a smiling face and my hands tightened into a fist by my side, but what can I do? It’s not as though I can storm out there and punch his face, no matter what, Instructors are still superior, meaning they have the authority to decide and judge.

And we were meant to listen.

A few people shifted uneasily, side-eyeing each other. We all knew he wasn’t joking.

I exhaled sharply, rolling my shoulders. Anyways, better get to it now like he said, no one would want to risk the day turning dark before venturing up the hill to avoid fatal accidents or beasts that hide so well in the dark.

I glanced to the side Alec had been standing just a few moments ago to see he was nowhere in sight.

I frowned. How does he do that? I didn’t even notice him move, I mean he was just there as far as I could remember.

Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. Alec was... different, given that I had no idea that he was still in this base, then how does he manage to hide? Or was he instinctively avoiding me?

Well that explains a lot because although I wished him no ill, but the experience of that day is not something exactly pleasant to recall.

I turned back as the instructors started barking out orders as they gave out the touches they had strapped to the side of our belt.

I knew not to bother looking for teammates when Bella is out sick, I don’t have any friend here other than her, so convincing anyone to team with me is just the same thing as wasting the little minutes given to us.

Therefore, I didn’t even try doing so. I was the first to take the unfamiliar routes,

Unlike on the island which was surrounded by woods, this place has no such a thing, but a high mountain and smaller hills like a maze, a very vast area of land someone can easily get lost in.

The sky was turning dark. The moon was not out yet,

I let out a frustrated breath, my hands on my hips as I stopped to rest for a while. Damn it. I should’ve found something by now, that’s if one ’existed’ because all I had were sore legs and a touch light I would be putting into use if it grew darker than this.

I looked around, trying to figure out the best way up. The hill was steep, but if I took a slow, careful path, I could make it back before 8pm.

But going back without any crystals will be a really big problem, despite the facts that the instructor was smiling earlier, but if anyone were to return without what he requested, I knew enough how such acts is punished, and maybe i won’t be escaping it tonight, because this will be the last hill I’m going to climb today.

I took a deep breath and began to move again, however the ground beneath my foot suddenly gave way.

"Shit!" I cried as I lost my balance. My body tilted backward, and before I could react, I was rolling down. Rocks scraping against my arms and legs.

Then I crashed on my side with a loud thud, the impact so hard it rattled my bones. Causing a sharp sting to shoot through my arm, and I hissed through clenched teeth.

God’s! That hurts! I heaved a breath staring up at the dark sky for a while before I slowly pushed myself up, wincing as I moved. Although my right arm burned, and when I raised up the sleeve of the sweatshirt I wore and looked down, I saw raw, scraped skin. Blood welled up in some spots and some had gotten on my clothes, but I had to get up in spite of the pain knowing fully well that no one was coming to get me, and I can’t possibly leave myself here for greater harm, that is a beast that won’t hesitate to maul me.

My hands were shaking slightly as I staggered, left hand holding my right one as I slowly began to climb it again.

However, I was forced to halt in my steps when I heard something that sounded more like a groan.

Was someone... in pain?

I turned my head toward the higher hill, who else is out here? Did someone fall too? Or were they in danger?

Wiping my bleeding arm on my pants, I moved toward the noise, stepping carefully over rocks. But I noticed that the closer I got, the clearer it became, a shaky breathing, a muffled whimper like someone was in pain.

I got there in no time, but when I finally saw what was happening, I stopped in my tracks because it wasn’t a person. Put two people.

The Alpha sat on a big rock, he still had his shirt on, looking completely relaxed with his legs spread. And between his legs kneeled an omega, completely naked, his face buried in the crotch of the other man.

I just stood there, frozen, now I’m the one interrupting, why hadn’t I thought of this possibility... Now I embarrassingly stumbled into a scene like this. And why were they getting it on right here? Why not an enclosed place but here? Shouldn’t something like this be done privately?

Wait... There shouldn’t be an Alpha here. Not in a base meant for Betas and Omegas. Unless.

The Alpha chose that moment to look up at me.

However, even though it was dark, I could never mistake those eyes, piercingly cold and dark like an abyssal ground, mocking, cocky and everything but good.

A slow smirk crossed his face like he wasn’t surprised to see me. Like he wanted me to see this.

My stomach twisted. Shit.

I turned to leave immediately, but I underestimated the audacity of that man as I heard a rush of movement from behind me. I shouldn’t have looked, I didn’t want to but something made me do so.

The omega was now on the ground, his eyes widening unbelievably, and Kael just sighs , "You made me push so hard." He mused, flicking his eyes to the stunned Omega on the ground, then to me in the following seconds, "Didn’t anyone teach you it’s rude to leave before the fun even starts?"
