Chapter 46: No big deal

Kain Locke

An arm locked around me from behind, strong and unrelenting. Before I could even suck in a breath, a hand clamped over my nose and mouth, stealing the air from my lungs.

Panic hit me like a punch to the gut immediately. My body tensed, instincts kicking in as I struggled to break free. My hands shot up, fingers clawing at the grip over my face, but it didn’t budge.

"Shhh..." A quiet voice, low and familiar, whispered right against my ear.

I froze. Although my heartbeat still pounded, something in that voice made me hesitate.

I twisted my head slightly, breath coming fast through my nose, my pulse hammering against my skin as my eyes darted back and I saw dark hair first followed by sharp and prominent features, then that lazy, unreadable gaze.

I exhaled sharply through my nose, my body loosening just a little, but the tension still clung to my bones. My fingers twitched, ready to shove him off, but he was already letting go, his arm unhooking from around me.

I turned fully now, whispering, "The hell is wrong with you? You almost gave me a heart attack."

He dramatically rolled his eyes and pointed at his front, "Just watch." He said quietly.

That’s right, we’re currently in a tight situation, so even if I want to scream and yell my lungs out at him right now I couldn’t, because there’s a much bothersome company just a few meters away.

I turned my head back to the door, making sure I wouldn’t be seen by the dark hooded person as I watched him.

The person swiped the card at the lock but it beeped red twice and made an alerting sound repeatedly before going quiet.

The figure didn’t make the second attempt.

Obviously, the passkey is just for a test, whether it was going to work or not, and it doesn’t.

So they brought out something tiny from their hoodie pocket and attached it somewhere at the upper side of the door, adjusted it as quickly then they glanced back, the figure’s eyes suddenly went to where we were, but due to the cover, they didn’t see us.

After that, they dusted their palms and walked through the long hallway,

"Are you just going to let them go?" I couldn’t help myself from asking that, noticing they’d disappeared into the next corner where the stairs that lead to the upper floor are. But if Kael still wants them caught, it can still be possible since they took stairs, not elevators.

Kael only shrugged. "What does not letting them go matter?" He gestured lazily toward the door and started walking toward it,

I narrowed my eyes. "Then would you just let them go?"

"What am I supposed to do, give them a chase?" He let out a short chuckle, reaching for his pocket and brought out a card, similar to the one held by the intruder, then he swiped it and the door clicked once, green light beeping continuously then stopped. He was just about to pull at the door knob,

However , my stomach twisted. "Don’t! They did something there, they put something at the door." I warned him,

That person had clearly attached something to the door, didn’t he see them do it? Considering the facts that we are both here. What if the thing at the door was something like a human reactive explosion that is going to explode at the slightest moment.

"So?"

"So? What if it’s dangerous?" I clenched my fists. "You didn’t even check before deciding it’s no big deal!"

He didn’t even look at me as I heard him sighed like I was making a fuss over nothing, "Dangerous? If something like that could actually kill me, then I would’ve died a long time ago." he said nonchalantly.

Before I could argue, he reached out barehanded and plucked it from the doorframe. I barely caught a glimpse of it before his fingers curled around the small device with an amused smile on his face.

"What is that?" I asked, moving closer despite myself.

He rolled it between his fingers, "Monitoring device. Something that records everything." he said without looking up, his face now gathering a cloud of frown.

"They were watching?" I whispered as I stared at the mini device blinking a faint red light. It wouldn’t have been noticed if we didn’t see the person there because it was the color of the door.

Meaning this was beyond messed up. Someone wants to... might even have been recording everything happening in this room? And having someone watch every movement of you, every step, every action is not just creepy but frightening at the same time.

Kael just laughed, pressing his thumb on the chip before tossing it to the ground and stepping on it, twisting his leg, "Obviously, a lot of people want me dead. So this kind of thing isn’t exactly new."

I stared at him, a sick feeling curling up my gut. "And you’re just okay with that?"

He just let out a short humourless laugh, "Not really. But it’s not surprising." His eyes flicked back to me, amusement dancing in them before he bent down and picked up the chip which was no longer blinking faint red light, "And what’s with all this concern anyway? Could it be... you don’t want me dead?"

I clicked my tongue. "Geez, even now, you’re still a dickhead. I don’t even blame the people who want you dead."

He didn’t argue with me, just opened the door, stepped inside like he was waiting for something instead of closing it, and when his eyes eventually flicked back to me. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

"I know you want me dead too," he said casually with a broad smile, "But you can always do it later, right?"

"Maniac." I scowled, shaking my head.

He just bobbed his head up and down, "I know. Now come on in, will you?" he said, stepping aside, creating space wide enough for someone to pass through.

Was he actually inviting me into his room?
