Chapter 65: Restless

Kain Locke

Kael’s kiss deepened, his lips warm and demanding as they moved against mine. My chest tightened, heat coiling low in my stomach as his tongue teased mine, coaxing me into responding. And I did, god, I did. My fingers tightened in the sheets before sliding up, hesitant, then bolder, until they found his shoulders.

A shiver ran through me when he shifted, adjusting himself as he easily entered between my legs, pressing me deeper into the mattress. His weight, the way his body aligned against mine, sent a pulse of something dangerous and thrilling through my veins. His hands traced my sides, fingers ghosting over my ribs, sending a shudder through me. My breath hitched again, and a quiet, reluctant sound escaped me when his lips left mine, trailing down my jaw, all the way to my throat then lower..

I should’ve stopped this. But I didn’t.

Instead, my fingers curled into his hair, my body betraying every ounce of self-control I thought I had. A soft chuckle vibrated against my skin as he nipped on my glands before his lips returned to mine, slower now, teasing, savoring. He took his time, drawing out every sensation until my pulse was nothing but a frantic drumbeat in my ears.

Then, just as suddenly as he’d started, he pulled back.

His breathing was uneven, his lips slightly swollen, but his eyes held something unreadable as he stared down at me.

I barely had a second to process before he rolled off me, but instead of pulling away completely, his arm curled around my waist, tugging me against him. His warmth seeped into me, grounding me in a way I hadn’t expected.

Then he pressed a kiss to my forehead, his voice low, quiet. "When I say stop saying something, you stop, alright? Or next time, I’ll dare do more than that."

I should have pushed him away.

Before, I would have.

But now? Now, I just let him hold me. And before I even realized it, my eyes slipped shut, my body relaxing into his warmth. Sleep took me before I could think too hard about what any of this meant.

The next morning started quiet. Just the sound of birds chirping and the clinking of dishes as Irene and I ate breakfast,

The visitors from last night had also left, I didn’t see them when I woke up this morning, they always left so early.

Irene had gone to invite Kael for breakfast earlier but he said he’ll be joining later,

Talking about him, my face flushed red recollecting the kiss from last night, the feel of his lips on mine and how I had loved every moment of it.

I quickly brush the thought off my mind and focus on the meal I’m having a hard time focusing on.

However a sound suddenly came from outside of the house, it was like a deep, rumbling force that shook the walls.

I dropped the fork and jumped to my feet almost immediately running to the door, followed by Irene who was right behind me as we rushed outside, just in time to see the trees whipping wildly, leaves and dust swirling in the air. The ground trembled beneath my feet as a massive black chopper descended into the clearing.

The wind from the blades was so strong I had to shield my face. Irene stepped forward, squinting against the dust. "Who..."

Before she could complete the statement, Kael, who I have no idea, also comes out, shoots his hand out, and grips her arm. "Don’t move any forward, and shield your eyes from the dust!"

It wasn’t until the chopper landed successfully that the door opened and a tall man stepped out of the chopper. He wore dark sunglasses, and the wind tousled his hair in a wild dance. With a casual flick, he removed his suit jacket and handed it off to someone waiting behind him. A half-smile played on his lips as he said coolly, "You’ve spent enough time here," he said, "It’s time to go home."

Home?

Confused, I turned to Kael for an explanation given that I haven’t seen this man before. And Kael doesn’t look surprised or confused like I was, which made me wonder if this was his plan to return to the base, but it was supposed to be tomorrow! So why was he now changing plans when he was the one who asked to say goodbye to these people today!

His eyes met mine briefly, and he made a subtle signal with his hand, a motion that said, Get on board.

My stomach twisted. Even though I want to do everything but obey him right now, he had that look that usually made me do things against my will.

I turned to Irene, wanting to say goodbye properly, at least if I’m getting on that chopper they deserved a proper goodbye, but before I could take a step, Kael’s hand slid into mine. His grip was warm, firm, and unyielding. Then he leaned in, his breath brushing against my ear. "You can come back later," he whispered. "Not getting on that chopper in the next second is going to get all of them killed."

My blood ran cold at the hearing of that, then I glanced briefly at his face, "Are they with you?" I whispered back.

"No, but they’re not going to hurt you, I can assure you of that, so get on. And no matter what, everything that happened right after we left the party stays between us. Also." He went silent, forcing me to glance at the tall man impatiently waiting at the chopper,

And before I knew it, he already slipped something into my hand. "Keep this safe." He added and I swallowed wanting to ask what it was, and how he got it while being here? After all it was just us here.

I hesitated. Just for a second.

Then I nodded.

Without another word, he went to climb into the chopper, I followed, my gaze locking onto the villagers one last time.

Ryan stood beside Karen, and Irene just stood there and watched as the chopper lifted off and their figures grew smaller and smaller. Then, they were gone.

****

I sat near the window, watching the endless stretch of sky, trying to make sense of everything. I had managed to slip the tiny material into my trousers pocket, obviously, he was trying to hide it from these people? Who are they anyway?

And does he actually have the chip with him all along? Could it be that was what he went for back at the party when he followed that man who referred to him as Droco?

This is all so confusing.

After almost an hour of flying, we eventually had the base island in sight and the chopper hovered for a moment before tilting slightly, preparing to descend.

We were back. The base island stretched below us,

And the moment the skids touched the ground, the door was pulled open. The rush of wind sent my hair flying, but I barely noticed as I turned to Kael, expecting him to move.

But he didn’t.

He just sat there, one arm draped over the back of his seat, he appeared a little perplexed.

I frowned. "Aren’t you getting off?"

It was only then he leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on his knees. His black eyes studied me,

Then his usual annoying smirk crept back to his lips and he blew me a kiss, muttering, "I’ll be back soon."

Before I could react, the other man behind me pushed me out and I almost crashed to the ground, weren’t for the fact that I quickly balanced myself, I turned back hurriedly to see the doors slamming shut, and just like that the chopper lifted off the ground.

"What the hell?"

I stumbled back, watching as it rose into the sky with Kael in it, the sound of the rotors growing distant until it was nothing but a black speck in the clouds.

Wait.

Why did they take him and leave me behind? Weren’t they supposed to drop both of us on the island? Then where is he fleeing off to with those men who looked everything but friendly.

This wasn’t right. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be a good idea staying here when I have no idea of what might be crawling out of the water, therefore, I turned on my heel and started walking into the woods.

I exhaled sharply, dipping my hand into my pocket and fished out a tiny, crystal-like chip, no bigger than a fingernail given earlier to me by Kael. Well... I put it back into my pocket and kept pushing my way through the trees until the base came into view.

The moment I stepped inside, I noticed something , although the base wasn’t empty, it wasn’t as full as it should be, even as I walked through, only a handful of people passed by.

I made my way to the elevator which took me to my floor, by the time I opened the door to my room, hoping to see Sam at least he could explain what has happened within the few days and where are the people here,

But the room was still, as if no one had been in it for a few days.

I hesitated before stepping inside, letting the door shut behind me.

I sat on the bed, running a hand through my hair.

Kael would come back.

He always did.

...Right?

I leaned back, staring at the ceiling before slumping on the bed, heart pounding as I pulled out my communicator, my thumb hovering over the power button. Maybe now I could finally—

A knock cut through the my thoughts,

Before I could react, the door swung open, and a blur of energy crashed into me.

"Kain, you little rat! Where the hell have you been?!"

She tackled me with a strength that definitely didn’t belong to someone who had nearly died from snakebeast poison. She squeezed me so tightly I could barely breathe before pulling back, shaking me by the shoulders. "Do you have any idea how worried I was?! Where were you anyway?"

I wasn’t the type to hide things. Lying had never been my strong suit. But Kael’s words echoed in my head. Keep everything that happened between us.

I cleared my throat. "I got caught in the middle of something... and now here I am."

Bella narrowed her eyes, clearly unconvinced. But instead of pushing, she waved it off and threw her arms around me again.

"I missed you, you idiot! Anyway, have you eaten yet? Breakfast is over... should I grab you some snacks?"

I stiffened slightly, her warmth pressing against me.

And then, like a nagging ache, I remembered Irene.

She had been nothing but kind to me. I didn’t understand it, but somehow, I was growing... attached to her. And yet, I’d left just like that, without a word. The thought made me groan as I dragged a hand down my face.

"I already ate," I muttered, before grumbling, "Now get off. You’re crushing me...ugh, how are you this heavy?!"

Bella gasped in offense but responded by squeezing me even tighter.

I let my body go limp. "You’re killing me you hag!"

She finally let go with a huff, plopping down beside me on the bed. "It’s been so boring here without you, you know."

I smirked. "I doubt it." I know I’m everything but fun!

She rolled her eyes. "Anyway, what happened while you were gone?"

I leaned back against the wall. "You tell me first."

She let out a sigh. "It’s been... intense. The night you left, Caspian showed up."

That made me sit up straighter. "Caspian? Here?"

She nodded. "Yeah. He didn’t stay long though, but that didn’t put people on a lesser edge."

I exhaled slowly. "Did he say anything?" Considering the circumstances, it was hard not to be suspicious. He came here after not showing up for such a long time, and if I remember correctly, he saw me with his son at the party... was he the one that sent the chopper or... it doesn’t make any sense.

"Nothing unexpected," Bella said, crossing her arms. "But half the base got sent on a new mission."

That explained why the place had felt so empty on my way back, Sam must’ve been among them.

We were still talking when Bella’s communicator beeped. She pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and her expression changed .

"I have to go," she said, standing abruptly. "I’ll come by later."

Bella leaving like that wasn’t unusual, but something about the way she looked at her screen felt off.

I raised a brow but didn’t ask. If it was important, she’d tell me. Probably. Thinking about it, she always seems to find me at convenience but finding her has always been impossible for me.

I let myself fall back onto the bed, sighing into the silence.

And for some damn reason, Kael flashed into my mind, and for some unknown reason I felt restless.
