Chapter 59: An Old Face

The snake boss had very little health left when Jax arrived next to it and struck down with his axe. The axe sunk into the snake’s blue flesh, the sharp risen scales giving way for it to reach the inside.

Jax immediately pulled back his axe, realizing that the first strike hadn’t killed the snake at all. However, if that strike didn’t kill it, the next one would.

He moved to the side, swinging his axe once again.

As he did, he saw a flash of light from his peripheral vision. He instinctively stopped and moved to the side just in time as a sword came down at where he was before.

Jax quickly spun around, ready to attack the man. He couldn’t tell how the man had gotten out of his entrapment so quickly, but now that he had, he would have to fight him.

However, even as Jax prepared himself for the upcoming fight, his entire body froze when he realized that it was not the man from before who had attacked him.

It was a different person entirely.

The man he saw before was much older than the other one, who was still trapped in his threads to the side.

The old man wore tattered clothes with holes all over, torn in many places. Through the holes, he could see wounds all around him—some cuts, some slashes. His entire body was worn out from what Jax could see.

There were three wounds that stood out on this man. One was a spiral scar along his right arm. The second was a blue bruise around his neck, and finally, a fresh wound on his left cheek, going down from his eye to his chin.

Jax remained frozen at the sight of the old man.

The old man huffed as he stood, a sword in his hand with tiny nicks all along the edges. He seemed too tired to stand, and yet he still did.

His blood-red eyes landed on Jax, and a look of pure anger surfaced on his face.

"You... you won’t get away... from me..."

Jax took a step back. The situation didn’t make sense to him at all. "How... how are you alive?" fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

The last time Jax had seen this man, he had been swallowed by the grassland outside of the Dead Woods. He was the old man he had met that day, the one who had died on his own axe, which Jax had taken away afterward.

Jax had seen this man die; he was certain of it. However, the man stood alive, although not that well off. ’How is this possible?’

"I... I will never... die," the old man said, raising his sword. "Until the day I kill you, I will... I will never die."

Without warning, the old man dashed forward, swinging horizontally at Jax.

Jax bent backward just in time to dodge the old man and kicked him in the chin before flipping and landing on the soft grass. He reached out with his left hand and used his spell.

Divine Threads!

A decent amount of threads appeared around the old man, without any element. Jax was too confused to know if he should use poison or not.

The old man was immediately trapped in the threads, constricted by them, but not for long.

He grunted just once and flexed his body so hard that he ended up tearing open all the threads.

Jax hadn’t used many loops, but the thread he had used had been of the best quality. He couldn’t imagine that his spell had been broken through so easily.

The man dashed forward, glowing slightly orange as he did.

Jax tried to use his spell again, but the man placed his sword before him. When the spell landed, the threads wrapped themselves around the sharpness of the blade, tearing away on their own.

’Shit!’

The old man swung down his sword, and Jax struck back with his axe.

Instantly, he could tell just how much stronger the old man was compared to him. Since his axe was so much stronger than a regular weapon, all the force of the attack transferred directly onto his body, making him feel as if his bones would break at any moment.

The old man pulled back his sword and swung again.

Jax stepped back in fear. He did not want to go through the same thing again. He needed to fight the old man in some other way.

To start with, he had been flabbergasted by the old man’s presence. He couldn’t yet tell how an old man that had died previously was alive once again.

The old man tried to attack again, but he quickly turned to the right and jumped as a sweeping attack came from the snake, which had used its tail to attack everyone.

Jax noticed the snake’s attack in time as well and jumped up in time, dodging it.

As he landed, he heard a scream. He quickly looked to the side and saw a sight of horror.

Blood spilled from the broken body of the female sorcerer he had constricted, who had no chance of dodging the snake’s attack at all. The warrior was wounded and had survived thanks to his stronger body, but the sorcerer had no way of defending herself at all.

Jax froze in terror as he realized that the woman had died.

Out of his threads that were torn apart by the snake’s sharp scales, the wounded man ran up to his companion, but it was too late.

It was way too late.

His eyes blanked in horror as he looked at her, trying to wake her up. When he couldn’t, he looked up, his eyes moving toward Jax, who had been the cause of this.

Jax didn’t know what to do at that moment. He didn’t know what to say. He was both speechless and frozen.

He only turned his head to the side upon hearing a small noise. When he turned, the old man had ended up dealing the killing blow on the snake.

The old man pulled out his sword from the snake’s back and turned back toward Jax, ready to kill him again.
