Super Soldier in the City-Chapter 2065 - 2128: Surrounded
Li Yifei naturally didn’t mean to scare her. Seeing Xu Shanshan frightened, he reached out and pulled her into his arms. After Xu Shanshan calmed down a bit, he said, "This island is very strange, probably more sinister than the things in Vietnam’s formation method, so we have to be careful from now on. Look at the many bizarre things I’ve encountered in just half a day. If we go deeper, I’m afraid we’ll encounter even more."
Xu Shanshan nodded vigorously, her mouth moved as if she wanted to suggest they go back, but she didn’t say it. Instead, she changed to: "Husband, I will be more careful and won’t act recklessly."
"Silly girl, do you regret coming with me?" Li Yifei asked with a smile.
"What’s there to regret? As long as I can be with you, heaven or earth, I’ll go anywhere. Besides, in our line of work, isn’t it about experiencing more, seeing more, encountering more, and gaining knowledge, so we can better protect ourselves and our family and friends?" Xu Shanshan raised her eyebrows and said somewhat proudly.
What a character, Li Yifei couldn’t help but grin as he listened to Xu Shanshan’s obedient words.
But after this chat and laugh, Xu Shanshan wasn’t as scared anymore. She leaned on Li Yifei’s shoulder and said, "This place is indeed bizarre. Just the giant lizard I encountered mimicked human speech. It seems like whatever sounds they hear, they try to imitate. The giant lizard I killed earlier pretended to be a man’s voice. I even thought it was you, so I went over to check, only to find out it was such a creature, and at that time, it was still talking non-stop."
"What did it say?" Li Yifei instinctively asked.
"It said... hurry up, hurry up! And some other words I couldn’t make out. It felt like it was saying to hurry or it would be too late!"
Li Yifei frowned, pondering this sentence. The person who said this couldn’t be him or Xu Shanshan but must be someone who landed on the island before them. What were they doing? Why would they say it’s too late?
Unfortunately, Li Yifei didn’t hear this sentence himself; otherwise, he might have determined whether it was Seventh Brother or Ninth Brother’s voice. Of course, if it was one of the other squad members, Li Yifei wouldn’t be able to distinguish it.
It could also be that it’s not Seventh Brother’s team, and it might not even be the first squad.
The two suddenly fell silent. Li Yifei fell into thought. He’s not a conspiracy theorist, but in such a bizarre place, he had to think more. Quickly, he even considered whether Wang Yong and the others had hidden something and lured him here. What if they were plotting against him?
Thinking this way made Li Yifei’s breath tighten. In such a place, even if he realized it late, it would be tricky to handle. If those people were targeting his family... well, with Su Mengxin and Su Lio’s grandfather present, as long as it wasn’t a sudden event, they should manage. However, if a few top experts like him suddenly appeared, that would be dangerous. But if they were ordinary experts, with Jiang Ningxiang, Sophia, and the family’s security, they should be able to cope.
And if they were plotting against him, wanting to kill him here, relying on these monsters would be almost impossible. Of course, it’s almost certain that there are stronger monsters inside.
Even dealing with the ones on the outskirts is difficult enough for Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan. If it were ordinary experts, they’d probably struggle. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Soon, Li Yifei shook his head, exhaling deeply. He suddenly thought, recently he’s been relatively peaceful, not provoking anyone. There’s no reason for anyone to go to such lengths to plot against him, especially since he saw with his own eyes the several members of the first squad dead on the beach. So, it shouldn’t be a conspiracy. Otherwise, that would be too costly, given that the members of the first squad are all elites, trained by the state for years. Losing even one is a huge loss.
"Husband, what’s wrong?" Xu Shanshan noticed Li Yifei’s odd demeanor and turned to ask.
Li Yifei shook his head and said, "It’s nothing, just thinking about something."
"Get some sleep. I’ll keep watch for the monsters you mentioned!" Xu Shanshan said softly.
Li Yifei said, "You sleep first. I’m not tired yet."
"No, you sleep first. You’ve traveled so far to find me; your exhaustion must be greater than mine. You restore your energy first. I’ve only killed a few lizards, not much of a depletion at all." Xu Shanshan insisted.
Li Yifei didn’t argue with her but sat cross-legged to meditate and recover his energy.
The place where they were, the Spirit Qi wasn’t particularly dense, just average, which was somewhat abnormal.
In the latter half of the night, Li Yifei woke up and told Xu Shanshan to rest; he would watch over them for the rest of the night.
Xu Shanshan had been holding onto her sword vigilantly throughout the half-night, so she was somewhat exhausted. Seeing Li Yifei recovered, she leaned over to plant a kiss on his lips and said, "Husband, I’m going to sleep now. Remember to wake me for a switch."
"Hmm, let’s sleep." Li Yifei laughed softly.
The nighttime forest had an indescribable eeriness. It wasn’t necessarily very dangerous, but there was an unsettling atmosphere in the darkness. The forest was too quiet; no sounds of birds or beasts, no buzzing insects, just silence—a breeding ground for strangeness.
In such a place, Li Yifei wouldn’t relax his vigilance. After resting for a few hours, he recovered well. He maximized his perception because his vision was weaker in this darkness. Instead, it was better to close his eyes and focus fully on sensing the surroundings.
Beside him was Xu Shanshan’s gentle snoring. This girl had earlier spoken casually about easily killing several giant lizards, but when first encountered, she was probably scared beyond words; she just hadn’t said it.
After a little over an hour, Li Yifei’s eyebrow suddenly twitched. He sensed a giant lizard had broken in about seventy or eighty meters to their left. When it walked, it made thumping sounds, which were audible even from such a distance, and it seemed to be heading towards them.
As it got closer, Xu Shanshan was also awakened. Upon waking, she saw Li Yifei gesture for silence. A few seconds later, she understood, and looking down, she indeed saw a massive giant lizard about twenty meters away. It seemed to have caught their scent and was moving towards them, despite the distance.
The giant lizard appeared rather annoyed upon seeing food in the tree. After raising its head and observing for a while, it hit the tree with its long horn a few times, realizing the tree wouldn’t budge. It wouldn’t give up, though, circling the tree a few times. Then, suddenly, its front claws grabbed the trunk, and it started climbing slowly.
"Let me handle it!" Xu Shanshan gripped the Blue Glow, sounding somewhat displeased.
"Okay." Li Yifei nodded. His sword wasn’t as sharp as Xu Shanshan’s, so when the giant lizard climbed to seven or eight meters, Xu Shanshan wielded her sword, slashing a blue Sword Aura that knocked the creature down. But it wouldn’t give up, and after falling, it still struggled to climb back up.
"Listen." Xu Shanshan’s expression changed suddenly, pointing at the giant lizard below and speaking to Li Yifei.
Li Yifei had also noted that the giant lizard was making muttering sounds, seemingly saying, "Hurry, go inside."
Go inside? Li Yifei instinctively looked towards the center of the island. Trees blocked the view, making it impossible to see. Even during the daytime, it wasn’t visible, always shrouded in white fog, obscuring the inside.
The giant lizard kept repeating the words, like a chatterbox. Seeing it still trying to climb, Xu Shanshan prepared to jump down with her sword to finish it off.
Li Yifei nodded, ready to join Xu Shanshan in going down.
Just as he was about to jump first, he suddenly stopped, pulling Xu Shanshan back, a vigilant expression on his face, saying, "Wait a moment, Shanshan."
Xu Shanshan’s guard was relatively weaker. Seeing Li Yifei’s off expression, she instinctively extended her perception, her face quickly changing as well.
Both felt a sudden oppressive sensation, distinctly as if someone was watching them.
It was a peculiar feeling, like a pair of eyes in the dark observing them. Those eyes were black, the same color as the night. Thus, even with Li Yifei amplifying his perception, he couldn’t pinpoint their exact location; yet he and Xu Shanshan both sensed being watched.
What was hidden in the night? With such a feeling, Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan weren’t in a hurry to deal with the giant lizard, despite the possibility of it attracting other lizards or creatures.
The island was full of eeriness everywhere. Li Yifei held Xu Shanshan’s hand for reassurance, then said, "Put your backpack on; let’s move somewhere else."
"Alright." Xu Shanshan nodded immediately. While speaking, a shadow suddenly darted from afar. Instinctively, she let out a scream. Li Yifei raised his sword to block it, hearing a whoosh as the shadow swiftly bypassed both the duo and Li Yifei’s sword, flying past them, carrying a fishy breeze.
The shadow vanished as quickly as it appeared, in a blink.
"Careful!" Li Yifei gripped his sword. Compared to this shadow, the threat from the giant lizard below was much less. This sudden shadow was more terrifying than the bat-like monster Li Yifei had encountered before. That bat monster could at most put someone into a trance, whereas this shadow—just the wind it stirred during its attack left their faces stinging.
The night, the sudden attack intensified the tension. Li Yifei and Xu Shanshan exchanged a look, simultaneously turning and standing back-to-back, swords ready for defense. From afar, a few more unicorn lizards crawled out, seemingly drawn by the noise. Seeing the tree-bound food, their mouths emitted various sounds, some were original roars, others were mimicking what they had heard.
