Chapter 146: I Love You. 146

Enzo caught the flicker of disappointment in her eyes even though she tried to hide it. "Hey," he said, reaching down to brush a stray strand of hair away from her face. "Don’t worry, alright? I’ll be back before you know it. Thirty minutes, tops."

Adeline sighed before giving him a small nod. "Alright."

With that, Enzo leaned in again—this time, placing a soft kiss on her lips. But unlike the simple peck she expected, this kiss was different. His hand slipped along her jaw and into her hair as he tilted his head, deepening it.

His thumb stroked gently against her cheek, his lips coaxing a breathy sound from her throat. Her eyes fluttered shut, and her hands gripped the blanket tightly.

For a second, she nearly lost herself in it, almost forgetting he was supposed to be leaving. But even as her body melted into his, she caught herself, pressing her palms against his chest with a giggle and gently pushing him back.

"Go, silly," she whispered between soft laughs.

Enzo pulled back with a chuckle, his eyes still half-lidded and his lips parted as though he hadn’t quite gotten his fill. "I almost got carried away."

He stepped backward slowly, not turning yet, keeping his eyes locked on her as if he couldn’t bear to look away. His back hit the door, and only then did he glance over his shoulder, open it, and slip outside.

Adeline lay back with a sigh, letting herself sink into the bed, her eyes lifting to the ceiling as boredom began to creep in. He was only gone for a second, and she had already started missing him. The room felt quieter without his presence, the stillness echoing a little louder than she liked.

But just when she thought she was alone, the door cracked open again. Her gaze flicked to the side and found Enzo’s head poking back in through the gap. He shot her a flirtatious wink, his voice dropping into a low murmur as he said, "I love you."

Before she could respond, he disappeared again, the door closing behind him. Rolling her eyes, she giggled and whispered under her breath, "I love you too."

— Two hours later —

Enzo stood in front of the full-length mirror with his arms slightly outstretched, a questioning look on his face as Adeline adjusted his clothes with thoughtful fingers.

He wore dark, rugged blue jeans, white sneakers, a crisp white T-shirt, and a jacket that matched the tone of his pants. His long brown hair, as always, was pulled back into a rough bun. He looked...normal.

Adeline stepped back a little with her hands on her hips, surveying her work like a stylist overseeing her model before a runway show.

She, too, wore rugged jeans, a white crop top that left a hint of her stomach visible, and white sneakers that matched his. Her blonde hair was tied into a bun as well, though hers was neater, with not a single strand out of place.

Enzo stared down at himself in the mirror, lifting one brow. "Do I really have to wear this?" he asked, tugging slightly at the collar of the jacket. "Can’t I just wear a suit instead?"

Adeline let out a soft, disapproving click of her tongue and stepped forward to gently pat his chest. "No can do. You’ve worn suits so much they’ve become basic to me now. You look good in this. It’s about time you changed it up a little. And besides, who goes to an amusement park wearing a suit, anyways?"

Enzo tilted his head and hummed thoughtfully, his expression somewhere between reluctant and amused. Then he gave her a slow nod. "Very well, then. If this is what you want me to wear... then this is what I shall wear."

Without a word, Adeline lifted herself up on her tiptoes. She didn’t even need to say anything—Enzo saw the motion and immediately leaned down, tilting his head to present his cheek.

She pressed a soft kiss there, her lips lingering just a second longer than necessary. When she pulled back, her hands slid down his chest, smoothing out a wrinkle in his shirt as she gave him one last once-over.

"You look perfect," she said, meeting his eyes with a smile full of affection.

Enzo reached for her hand, lifting it to his lips and kissing her knuckles with a bow of his head.

——

Adeline and Enzo stepped out of the elevator and entered the long, tiled hallway of the estate’s first floor. Walking side by side, Enzo’s hand brushed briefly against hers, his fingers grazing along her knuckles before he subtly laced them together.

Upon reaching the grand foyer, Enzo subtly increased his pace, stepping ahead to reach the towering front doors first. He grasped one of the handles and pulled it open, then turned slightly to the side, gesturing for her to go ahead with a small smile. He followed immediately after, the door swinging closed behind him.

They’d barely made it a few steps across the wide front steps, headed toward the path leading to the garage when Adeline’s eyes caught a flicker of movement to the side. She turned her head slightly and spotted Svetlana emerging from the path that led to the estate’s garden.

Svetlana wore a simple cream-colored apron, smudged with dirt and leaf stains, suggesting she’d been tending to the garden. What was she doing gardening at night? Nobody knew.

When Adeline lifted her hand and gave a polite wave along with a faint smile, Svetlana fought the instinct to frown. She masked it, instead composing her features into a neutral, almost pleasant expression as she approached.

"We’ll be out for a while, Auntie," Adeline said gently. "Could you please look after the estate while we’re gone?"

The request was simple, but coming from Adeline made it feel heavier somehow. Svetlana’s jaw tightened, though she kept her lips curled in something resembling agreement. She didn’t want to do anything for Adeline, but there wasn’t much choice anymore. Her husband was in jail now. His brothers too.

In a few weeks, Adeline would be getting her inheritance, so everything now basically belonged to her.
