Chapter 40: They’ve Gone Inside 40

The black van carrying Evelyn slowed down, turning onto a narrow, secluded path that seemed more like an abandoned road. It led to an abandoned building surrounded by a tall iron fence.

At the gate stood three men. Two of them held wooden bats, while the third carried a handgun. As the van approached, the man with the gun pressed a button on a control panel and the gate creaked open, revealing the building within.

The van drove through, parking in the courtyard before the gate shut again. Hidden among the trees nearby, Andrei crouched on a branch, watching every single movement. He had parked his car at a nearby lot and pursued the van on foot, so as to remain undetected.

Gripping the branch tightly, he leaped down, landing directly in front of the three men.

The thud of his boots against the ground startled them. "What the hell?" the man with the gun barked, immediately raising his weapon and aiming it at Andrei.

The other two men stepped forward, gripping their bats tightly.

"Who the hell are you?" the gunman demanded. "Get out of here, now, if you value your life."

Andrei’s expression remained calm, almost bored. He emitted a soft sigh and brushed some dirt off his jacket before speaking. "Let’s just get this over with."

One of the men with a bat, a broad-shouldered thug who nearly matched Andrei’s height, stepped forward. "You think we’re messing around, dumbass–"

Before the man could finish his sentence, Andrei moved and in less than a second, he was in front of the him. With a single punch to the face, he sent the man flying backward and crashing into the fence. His body crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

The other two guards hesitated for a moment, their eyes wide with disbelief.

"What the hell is he?!" the remaining bat-wielder shouted, gripping his weapon tightly.

The man with the gun snapped out of his shock and aimed at Andrei, pulling the trigger. Andrei darted to the side in a blur, dodging the bullet by a hair’s breadth. In the blink of an eye, he was in front of the gunman.

"What the—" the gunman stammered.

His hand shot out and grabbed the man’s wrist with a crushing grip, forcing him to drop the weapon. The gun clattered to the ground as the man let out a pained scream.

Andrei silenced him with a sharp kick to the stomach, causing him to spurt out blood that splattered on his suit and some even on his face. He proceeded to headbutt the man, twisting his arm before throwing him over his shoulder. The gunman’s body slammed down onto the ground, and he instantly lost consciousness.

The last remaining guard with the bat screamed and charged at Andrei in desperation. He swung his weapon wildly, but Andrei sidestepped the attack. Grabbing the bat mid-swing, he yanked it out of the man’s hands and snapped it in half like it was a twig.

The guard scrambled backward, fear clouding his features, as Andrei stepped closer and firmly grasped him by the collar. "Why was the girl brought here?"

The guard stammered, shaking his head frantically. "I—I don’t know, man!"

"Don’t lie to me." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"No! I swear! I’m just a lookout!"

Suddenly, Andrei drove his knee into the thug’s stomach, and he doubled over, gasping for air. Tightening his grip on the man’s collar, he slammed him face-first against the iron gate.

As the man’s head lolled to the side, unconscious, Andrei tossed him aside like he was just a piece of trash. He straightened, brushing his hands off as he looked at the three bodies sprawled around him. "Pathetic," he muttered before stepping over the unconscious man.

—------

Enzo swayed his head gently to the rhythm of the classical music playing in the car, humming every few seconds to it. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, completely unbothered.

Adeline, on the other hand, sat tense in her seat, nervously gnawing her fingernail as her eyes darted out the window. Unable to hold it in anymore, she turned to Enzo and asked, "Why isn’t he calling yet? It’s been almost an hour. What if something happened?"

Enzo didn’t even glance at her, his eyes on the road as he continued humming. "Calm down, Adeline. He’ll call--"

Just then, his phone buzzed. He smirked, pulling it from his pocket and glancing at the screen before turning it to Adeline to show her the caller ID. "Speak of the devil."

Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Andrei’s name on the screen.

Enzo glided a finger across the screen and answered the call. "Where are you?"

Andrei’s calm voice came through the line, relaying the location. "602 Pine Street, Boss."

Enzo nodded, muttering a quick "Got it," before ending the call. He slipped his phone into the holder on the dashboard and turned to Adeline.

"He’s given me the address," he said, starting the car.

Adeline clutched her chest, exhaling a heavy breath of relief. "Thank God."

Enzo leaned over, grabbing the seatbelt and dragging it over her. She blinked in surprise as he buckled her in, before gently patting her head. "Safety first," he said with a wink.

Sitting back in his seat, he gripped the wheel. "Now, hang on tight."

Before she could respond, he pressed down on the gas and the car surged forward.

---

About half an hour elapsed before finally reaching their destination. Enzo stepped out first, striding over to Adeline’s side and opening the door for her.

As they drew nearer to the gate, her eyes widened. There, lying in front of the entrance, were the bloodied, unconscious bodies of three men.

Her stomach churned at the sight and her hand instinctively reached out, gripping Enzo’s arm tightly. "What the hell happened here?"

Just then, Andrei emerged from behind the gate. His normally perfect suit was a bit disheveled and his hair was messy. Blood spattered across his collar, cuffs and face, but his expression was as calm and blank as always.

Reaching them, he bowed slightly, his eyes flickering to Enzo before pointing toward the abandoned building in the distance. "They’ve gone inside."
