Chapter 79: Warmth 79

"I guess it’s fine," he said with a sigh. "She already knew most of it anyway. And if she were to betray us tomorrow..." He paused, lifting a hand before Adeline could interrupt. "Not saying she will. But if she did, it wouldn’t really matter whether or not she knew about the herbs or our trip to Vegas. She wouldn’t need them to sell us out." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"All she has to do is tell your uncles that we’re pretending to be engaged and that I’m helping you to bring them to justice."

Adeline bit her lip, nodding slowly. She understood his concerns, but she still believed Evelyn would never do something like that.

"Well, I’m going to go get ready now," she said, gesturing towards the bathroom.

Enzo hummed in acknowledgment, watching as she turned and walked off.

Adeline and Enzo stood outside the hotel, the warm city air brushing against them as they waited for their ride. Enzo had his backpack slung over one shoulder while his other hand gripped the handle of Adeline’s rolling suitcase. His phone was pressed against his ear, his tone low and businesslike.

Adeline, meanwhile, stood a few steps away from him, her arms folded as she watched the steady flow of cars passing by, eyes narrowing each time one slowed down.

Enzo ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket before turning to her. His expression immediately flattened into a deadpan stare as he realized how far she had drifted from him. With a sigh, he dragged the suitcase along with him, closing the gap between them until he was standing right beside her. He didn’t say anything. Just stood there, waiting.

Adeline glanced up at him from the corner of her eye, noting his bored expression. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other before taking a small step to the side, subtly putting more space between them.

But Enzo, either oblivious or deliberately messing with her, did the same—moving in sync with her every step.

Her brow twitched. She stepped further away, but Enzo mirrored her movements, closing the distance once more.

He reached out, wrapping his arm around hers and pulling her against his side, his grip firm, yet nonchalant.

The sudden closeness sent an involuntary shiver up her spine. Her heart skipped—once, twice—before pounding wildly in her chest. Her free hand flew up, gripping the front of her shirt as if trying to steady herself.

A warm flush tinted her cheeks, but she collected herself, inhaling slowly and exhaling calmly to calm her racing heart.

They stood there in silence, side by side, waiting for their ride.

Minutes passed before a black SUV pulled up in front of them. The driver stepped out, giving them a polite nod before taking their luggage from Enzo and placing it in the trunk.

Adeline chuckled under her breath, her amusement slipping out before she could stop it. It wasn’t the car she was expecting.

His ears immediately picked up on the sound, and he turned his head to face her. "What’s funny?"

"I just thought it would be a Rolls-Royce, that’s all," she said, shaking her head, looking up at him with a playful smile.

Enzo let out a short, unimpressed hmph. "So did I," he admitted, folding his arms. "Clearly, Andrei hasn’t been paying attention."

She entered the car first, shifting closer to the edge to make space for Enzo, and once he settled in beside her, the driver pulled out onto the road, merging into traffic.

She leaned against the window, watching the city pass by. For the first time since that damn kiss, her mind felt clear. That one moment had left her flustered all morning. Every time she so much as glanced at Enzo, a strange heat would rise to her cheeks, and she hated it. She hated how easily he could throw her off balance.

But here, in the quiet hum of the moving car, she finally felt like she could breathe. She was no longer overthinking or hyper-aware of every little look Enzo threw her way.

It was... peaceful. But it didn’t last long.

At a red light, Enzo leaned forward, reaching past the front passenger seat. His fingers pressed against the button of the car’s radio, switching through different radio stations for a brief moment before stopping at his favorite one. The soft hum of classical music filled the space, the gentle notes of a piano drifting through the speakers.

Adeline’s head turned slowly toward him, watching as he buckled his seatbelt again, completely unbothered. His fingers tapped lazily against his thigh, following the rhythm while humming along.

She couldn’t help it—she stared. A smirk tugged at the corner of her lips as she shook her head, finding his old-fashioned taste in music amusing.

For what felt like the tenth time that morning, Enzo’s phone buzzed in his pocket. With an irritated sigh, he pulled it out and answered the call, bringing the device to his ear. His gaze drifted to the passing buildings outside as he listened.

His free hand shifted from his lap, moving absentmindedly toward the space between them, intending to rest against the leather seat.

The moment his palm landed, he felt something warm and soft beneath it. Adeline’s skin.

Enzo didn’t think much of it. His hand simply rested atop hers, fingers draped over the back of her palm. He had held her hand too many times to count, whether it was for show in front of her family, to tease her, or for no reason at all. It was nothing new. Nothing worth reacting to.

But for Adeline, the simple touch sent a jolt through her entire body.

Her pupils darted around, unsure where to look, but she refused to glance down at their hands. Her breathing grew shallow as she tried desperately not to freak out or let it bother her, reminding herself over and over that this was just a casual touch. It had happened before. It didn’t mean anything.

But it didn’t feel the same anymore. Everything had changed after that damn kiss. Now, even the warmth of his hand against hers felt different. Intimate.
