Chapter 109: The Owner’s Proposition

Evan looked at her expectantly. She opened her mouth to argue back, but her throat couldn’t even make a single sound.

With a defeated sigh, she placed her hands on her lap and clenched them into fists.

"You’re putting me on the spot," Eternity said through gritted teeth. "You can’t honestly expect me to fire a girl who went through all of those things you’ve mentioned..."

"Oh?" Freiheit said as he raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely surprised. "I expected you to feel repelled after what I’ve told you. Instead, you’re pitying her."

"Didn’t you feel the same way? That’s why you suggested Olivia be my tutor," Eternity pointed out.

Freiheit shrugged. "I would be lying if that wasn’t part of the reason why I did it."

"Part?" she repeated, furrowing her eyebrows together.

"He mostly did it to repay her debts to Mrs. Wilde," Evan answered for his brother, to which Freiheit responded with a gallant bow even if Evan’s words indicated he was a self-serving bastard. "He mentioned it earlier."

"Yes, I remember he did..." Eternity said glumly, continuing to stare at her clenched fists on her lap. "Still, you admit that you have the slightest care for Olivia’s welfare."

Freiheit opened his mouth to refute, but Evan raised his hand to indicate the "stop" gesture and began shaking his head. He took it as his cue to keep silent and pressed his lips into a straight line.

"You’re not an evil man, Freiheit," Eternity continued and finally looked up, her eyes meeting with Freiheit’s sapphire-colored pair. "Hence, I know you already know my answer to your question."

"I knew it," Evan said, clicking his tongue, looking away from her.

Meanwhile, Freiheit let out a deep sigh, knitting his eyebrows together.

"Piece of advice, Eternity," Freiheit began.

"Unsolicited," she pointed out, but motioned. "Do continue."

He seemed unfazed by what Eternity said, and he did as he was told.

"Sometimes, hard decisions should be made so that you can protect yourself from other people. At the end of the day, you only have yourself, so you should always, ALWAYS, make yourself your priority and not other people’s feelings."

"She’s literally just a teenager!" Eternity argued. "A teenager with a traumatic past, to make it worse!"

"Which is why," Evan said firmly. "You should act like you’re walking on eggshells when interacting with her."

He paused, his azure eyes narrowing.

"That is, if you still want to continue interacting with her."

"I do!" Eternity insisted fervently. "I want to continue having her as my tutor. She just confessed to me, guys! You’re both overreacting and making things out of proportion!"

"Confessing could lead to other things—" Evan tried to speak.

Only for Eternity to cut him off.

"But I’m sure those ’other things’ won’t include her trying to assault me. Sure, her confession would make things awkward between us, but I’m absolutely sure, with all my heart and soul," if she even had them in the first place. "that Olivia would never do something that could hurt me."

"How can you be sure of that?" Evan challenged.

"How can 𝘺𝘰𝘶 be sure that Olivia would do such a thing to me?" Eternity fired back, standing up from her seat on the sofa.

The sudden outburst surprised both Freiheit and Evan. Eternity wasn’t the type to lose her temper, and Evan didn’t order her to be programmed that way. But he noticed that Eternity was slowly becoming her own person, deviating from the ’persona’ he wanted her to have.

Eternity was slowly turning more human-like, and Evan wasn’t sure if this was a good thing or not.

But at that moment, Evan felt like it wasn’t.

"Because I know what true human nature is," he said slowly and calmly, but with much force and authority in his voice. "I know what it is to want, to lust, and to desire things to be mine."

It was a tone he often used when asserting dominance over the person he was talking to, yet he hadn’t been using it lately since Eternity entered his life.

You could guess the gravity of the situation while Evan was trying to be imposing at the moment.

Eternity wanted to argue, ’So are you saying I don’t?’ But she already knew the answer to that. All three of them knew, so it was stupid to even bother saying.

Her lips started trembling, a sign that although she strongly wanted to prove her case, she knew it was a losing battle. She would be acting like a hard-headed brat if she continued, and although Evan loved her so much, she knew that Evan was a very impatient man.

With a defeated heave, her shoulders slumped down. In a matter of seconds, tears started streaming down Eternity’s face and sobs escaped from her lips. Urgently, the two men went to her aid and tried to calm her down.

But to no avail.

They tried wiping her tears with a handkerchief, Freiheit patting her on the back, and Evan soothingly running his fingers through her hair. But there was one thing that they didn’t bother doing: They didn’t ask her the reason why she started crying in the first place.

It was because they already knew.

Eternity wasn’t weaponizing her tears against them like other women would. Instead, her tears were genuine regret and anguish.

Eternity didn’t have it in her to fire Olivia.

She was far too kind.

"What about this?" Evan suggested, speaking in a pacifying tone. "Instead of firing her, how about we just wrap up your tutoring sessions altogether?"

Eternity’s cries grew louder.

"That doesn’t make sense!" Freiheit rattled. "That’s the worst thing to say in this situation. You’re making things worse, Evan!"

"This way," Evan continued, using a tone that insisted he was hiding a good plan. "You don’t have to tell Olivia that you’re firing her. Instead, you’ll just be saying that you’re satisfied with all her teaching and that you’re finally ready to enter the real world. This is a win-win situation, for her and for you."

Eternity’s sobs slowly softened. She looked up at Evan with tear-stained cheeks and slightly crimson eyes.

"What do you mean, Evan?"

Evan smiled gently, feeling glad that his proposition caught her attention.’

"What I’m saying is, you’ll be done with your tutoring sessions and are ready to venture outside of the four walls of this apartment."

"Can you be more specific?" Freiheit probed.

"I think you should graduate from homeschool already and join me in the corporate world as my secretary."
