Chapter 110: The Doll’s Request

"So are you saying...?" Eternity trailed off, her voice trembling but for a different reason this time.

Evan smiled soothingly as he nodded.

"You’re finally ready to venture into the real world."

Her wet, emerald-green eyes grew wide as saucers, and her whole body started to tremble in disbelief.

"I... I can finally go out?" She asked breathlessly, like the news was enough to knock the air out of her.

Evan nodded again.

"But of course, you still can’t go out of the apartment unchaperoned by me," he added as a disclaimer. His voice grew harder and harsher as he spat out his next set of words. "We don’t want the Berlin field trip incident to happen again."

"Figures..." she muttered under her breath, but the joy in her eyes remained. "Still, I’ll make do with what I can get."

"What incident?" Freiheit asked, raising an eyebrow.

But the two didn’t pay him any attention. Eternity now had a wide smile on her face, her eyes still dilated at the sheer thought of finally being able to go outside of the four corners of Evan’s apartment.

Freiheit sighed, "Poor me," but he didn’t seem to mind that the two were completely ignoring him.

Upon hearing Freiheit’s words, a realization struck Eternity, and her festive mood immediately dampened.

"Wait, I know this is good news on my end, but what about my tutor’s?" Eternity asked worriedly.

"They’ll be properly compensated for their efforts," Evan said. "We won’t be terminating their contracts. Instead, we’re going to tell them that they fulfilled it quite well. That’s why your tutoring session with them will end earlier than anticipated."

"How long was Eternity’s tutoring session supposed to last?" Freiheit questioned, reminding them of his presence inside the room.

"Six months,’" Evan responded.

Freiheit hummed. "And how many months of tutoring has Eternity had so far?"

"About..." Evan paused as he was deep into contemplation. "Barely even 2 months."

"A month and three weeks, to be exact," Eternity specified meekly, wiping off the remaining tears that were wetting her cheeks.

By now, she had completely calmed down, and everything was back to normal.

Freiheit nodded in acknowledgement in her direction before shifting his eyes back to Evan.

"I presume you intend to compensate them for the four months that remain in their contract?" he pondered.

Evan’s blue eyes widened as if he hadn’t thought about this possibility before uttering his proposal. He gritted his teeth and made a face as if he were constipated. But after a few seconds of contemplation, he begrudgingly nodded.

Freiheit snorted at his reaction.

"It’s not wasted money if it’s for Eternity’s sake, right?" Freiheit joked around, but both men knew that Evan was willing to throw more money if it was all for his seductive doll. "You should really be more irresponsible with your money, Evan." He added it ironically, shaking his head in disbelief.

"That’s not an advice you should take, Evan." Eternity said sharply, glaring at her brother-in-law.

Freiheit raised both his hands, a gesture to show his surrender.

Evan merely chuckled in response. "You know I wouldn’t."

Eternity gave a tired smile. Her emotional outbursts must’ve taken a toll on her, and now she could barely muster a slight twitch of her lip.

"But even if you’ll be giving them monetary compensation," Eternity argued. "I still have the obligation to personally tell them that I won’t need their services anymore."

"I’ll spare you the heartache," Evan shook his head and said nonchalantly. "I can just order someone in my office to send them a mass email or whatever, thanking them for their service, yadda, yadda, yadda."

"That’s not right," Eternity scowled deeply, causing Evan to wrinkle his forehead at her reaction. "It’s not just about the money, Evan. It’s about the bond we made."

"You made a bonds with your tutors?" Both men spluttered incredulously.

"Yes?" Eternity replied, and their reaction made her feel unsure of her answer.

"Huh," Evan let out a huff of air, but his expression showed pure confusion at Eternity’s revelation.

Eternity sighed, feeling a sense of loneliness at their reactions. It seemed that they couldn’t understand the significance of the connections she had made with her tutors.

"Yes," she said, her voice forceful and tinged with frustration. "We’ve spent almost two months together, studying, learning, everything. They’re the closest thing to what I consider as ’friends.’ I just can’t cut them off as if they were nothing to me!"

Evan exchanged a puzzled glance with Freiheit before turning his attention back to Eternity.

"I understand your sentiment, Eternity," he said, his tone softening slightly. "But sometimes, in the business world, decisions have to be made for the greater good. For your own good."

Freiheit nodded in agreement.

"In order for you to finally open a new Chapter of your life, you have to make sacrifices."

Eternity’s heart sank at their words. Even though she understood the practicality of what they were saying, it still didn’t make it any easier to accept.

"But..." she started, her voice wavering. "What about their feelings? How will they react to being let go without any personal explanation from me?"

Evan sighed, running a hand through his hair in a gesture of frustration.

"We’ll handle it delicately," he assured her, though his tone lacked conviction. "I’ll ensure that they understand the circumstances and that their work is appreciated."

Eternity nodded slowly, though her apprehension remained. She couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt that gnawed at her conscience.

"Okay," she said quietly, resigned to Evan’s decision. "I trust you."

Evan gave her a reassuring smile, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

"Everything will work out, Eternity," he said, his voice tinged with forced optimism. "You’ll see."

"But I have a request," Eternity abruptly added.

Evan raised an eyebrow in her direction but wordlessly motioned for her to continue.

"You can email my other tutors mass-generated emails," she said, although her tone was nasal if saying these words aloud left a sour taste in her mouth. "But I’ll do the talking myself when it comes to Olivia."

Freiheit raised an eyebrow.

"Isn’t that counterproductive--"

"Please," Eternity pleaded. "Let me, Evan."

Evan wanted to agree with his brother that it truly was counterproductive. But he trusted Eternity enough to let her decide on her own.

So he nodded.
