Chapter 127: The Doll Adapting in Her Environment

"How’s your first two weeks at Royal Blue so far?" J asked, taking a bite of his mashed potatoes.

Eternity shrugged, taking a sip of her orange juice. "The old ladies in my division are still pestering me about how I got hired, but most people are leaving me alone now."

She maintained an elegant composure, even though she knew that once they exited the cafeteria, she’d head to the restroom to vomit everything she had just eaten.

"How about you, J?" She asked, removing her lips from the straw, sensing he wanted to share his own experiences. "How’s RBAB treating you?"

"Fabulous," he said with gusto, crossing his legs and launching into his story. "They’ve been treating me well. No discrimination so far, though that might be because no one here has noticed I’m gay."

He set his utensils down with a soft clank and shifted his gaze to Eternity, giving her a look she couldn’t quite decipher.

"Except you, of course," he added in a low voice, ensuring no one else could hear. "I’m still curious how you found out in less than an hour."

Eternity set aside her now empty glass, the half-melted ice cubes clinking softly. "I’m just built different."

J seemed to be torn between amusement and annoyance. "I’m worried that it might’ve not been a good decision to teach you slang," he said, shaking his head with a small smile. "You learn too fast."

"Hey!" Eternity pouted playfully. "I already knew that slang before I met you!"

J’s small smile turned into a full-blown grin, and soon enough, Eternity was smiling widely too. They erupted into laughter, causing other cafeteria patrons to glare at their loudness.

"How’re you and Esteban?" Eternity asked teasingly once their laughter had subsided.

There was a twinkle in J’s eyes, as if he’d been waiting for this question. "You would not believe how much of a gentleman Esteban is!"

Eternity listened intently as J droned on about his love life. She couldn’t help but giggle, both at J’s enthusiastic recounting and because she was genuinely content with where she was in her life.

To say that things were going well for Eternity Doll at RBAB was an understatement.

She was 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨.

She quickly mastered her secretarial duties and was told by Evan that she was the most efficient secretary he’d had in years. Though, given that he hadn’t had a secretary in years, it wasn’t quite the compliment he intended.

She also made friends along the way, specifically J and Jakob. Despite this, something in her gut told her not to get too friendly with colleagues, and she wasn’t sure if it was instinct or her analytical skills warning her.

Either way, she wasn’t foolish enough to ignore this feeling.

"Oh, look at the time!" J exclaimed suddenly, glancing at his watch. "It’s almost past lunch break! I guess we’ll be seeing each other during lunch again?"

"You already know the answer to that, J." Eternity laughed, stacking her utensils neatly.

J shrugged, mimicking her actions. "Just making sure."

Eternity emerged from the women’s restroom, dabbing a tissue on her lips, her mouth still tingling from the aftertaste of the mouthwash. She had, after all, just emptied her stomach of the undigested food she’d forced down during lunch.

"You okay, Miss Doll?" Jakob’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Startled, she turned to see him standing nearby, his face etched with concern.

"I could hear you retching from outside," he said, frowning deeply.

Her cheeks turned red in embarrassment.

"No, it’s fine," he assured her, his tone gentle. "Ever since you started working here, I’ve noticed you purging yourself after lunch. I’m just worried you might have an eating disorder."

Eternity laughed wearily, shaking her head. "I don’t have an eating disorder. Don’t worry about me, Jakob."

"If you say so," he shrugged. "Still, though, if this keeps up, I might call the company doctor for him to check your condition."

"Please no," Eternity begged.

Eternity had been "alive" for nearly five months, yet she’d never seen a doctor in all that time. Not that there was a need—she wasn’t human, and it was practically impossible for her to get sick. Still, she couldn’t help but be curious about how her body worked.

She had come to realize there must be a reason why Manika Island wasn’t on any map and why the concept of Eternity Women wasn’t common knowledge.

Their existence was likely a closely guarded secret.

Jakob continued to look at her with hesitation, his brows furrowed in worry. Finally, he sighed in resignation.

"If you say so, Miss Doll."

"Thank you for your concern, Jakob," she said, offering an appreciative smile.

"That’s what colleagues are for!" he replied with a cheerful grin.

’I doubt that,’ she thought, but kept her silence, appreciating his kindness even if she couldn’t fully trust it.

"So I’ve heard Eternity has been working hard as your 𝘴𝘦𝘹𝘺𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺," Freiheit teased, propping his feet on top of the sofa’s armrest.

"Sit properly, Freiheit," Evan reprimanded without looking up from his files. "You’re too old to be scolded about how to sit like a civilized person."

Freiheit pouted but relented within seconds, finally sitting upright on the sofa.

"But to answer your question," Evan continued, shifting his attention from the documents to his brother. "Yes, she’s been doing an excellent job as my secretary."

"Where is she anyway?" Freiheit asked, glancing around the room as if expecting her to pop out from behind a curtain or under a desk.

"It’s lunch break, brother," Evan pointed out. "She’s out eating with her colleagues. Well, more of 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 with them than eat."

Freiheit raised an eyebrow. "I thought she couldn’t digest food?"

Evan nodded. "She can’t."

"Then how...?"

"She told me she vomits everything up before afternoon office hours resume. If she doesn’t, her stomach hurts."

Freiheit’s forehead wrinkled in alarm. "Man, that’s too much effort just to blend in."

"It is," Evan agreed, sighing as he leaned back in his chair. "But anyway, what’s the reason for your visit?"

"You’re not even going to ask how my latest trip went?" Freiheit laughed heartily. "I went to Italy, you know!"

"I don’t really care, Freiheit," Evan admitted bluntly. "So? What brought you here?"

The smile on Freiheit’s face vanished, replaced by an uncharacteristically stern expression.

"I’m going to Manika today."
