Chapter 67: The Doll’s Doppelgänger was Almost a Queen

When Edelweiss returned to the group, she had a very distressed expression.

"What’s wrong?" Evan inquired, raising an eyebrow.

He half-expected her to give a teasing reply and make a reference to his pathetic display a while ago, completely disregarding his question. But instead, she actually answered him seriously.

"Some issues with the production team," she sighed heavily, shaking her head. "I might need to leave Berlin earlier than expected to check how much damage the contamination has done to the latest batches."

"That’s awfully hands-on of you," Evan commented, sounding genuinely impressed.

Edelweiss mockingly flipped her hair, chuckling.

"Though I don’t want to worry about that now," she said dismissively. "Let’s continue with our day."

Evan and Eternity nodded, and they continued their merry way around the amusement park like they were a group of high school students instead of CEOs of the most affluent breweries in the world, except for Eternity, who was a sex doll that was probably made out of magic.

"Phew!" Edelweiss let out an exhale, wiping the sweat off her forehead. "Evan, since we’re already in the food court, could you be a dear and buy us some refreshments?"

Evan raised an eyebrow, leaning on the backrest of the metal chair.

"Are you seriously ordering me around, me, Evan Holz, to buy you some drinks?"

"Hey, it’s not like it’s just for me!" Edelweiss pointed this out. "It’s also for Eternity! Look, she’s probably thirsty already."

Eternity blinked, who was silently sitting on her own chair right next to Evan, and was surprised that she was suddenly added to the conversation.

"Oh no, I’m fine!" She exclaimed. "I’m not thirsty at all."

"A-are you sure?" Edelweiss persisted.

Eternity nodded, smiling brightly.

To be honest, she looked like her regular, perfect self, not even breaking a sweat even though they’d been exploring and enjoying different amusement rides for more than 3 hours already.

’Was she even capable of sweating?’ Evan thought to himself. ’And anyway, Eternity doesn’t eat or drink so Edelweiss obviously just wanted a reason to order him around.’

Realizing that using Eternity as her trump card was a futile effort, Edelweiss added it as a consolation.

"You can also buy yourself some food if you’d like...?"

As if the odds were against him, Evan’s stomach loudly grumbled. He felt his cheeks flaring up as his eyes darted from his stomach to Edelweiss, who was now making finger guns at him.

"Fine!" he finally conceded. "But know that I’m doing this for me and not for you!"

"Yeah, yeah!" Edelweiss said dismissively as she made a motion for him to go already.

Evan rolled his eyes at her before heading to the food stalls, where there were a significant number of people in the queue.

"Just my luck," he said through gritted teeth, cursing himself for not having maids or butlers he could order around to do menial tasks like this.

"Edelweiss," Eternity began as they waited for Evan to return with food and drinks. "I’ve been meaning to ask, but why do you call Evan your ’little brother?’"

"Oh!" Edelweiss exclaimed. "I was expecting you to ask sooner or later!"

She uncrossed her legs, leaning forward to the table and closer to Eternity as if she were about to tell a secret. Involuntarily, Eternity leaned in as well.

"He was the younger brother of my high school classmate, Freiheit." She said. "Though you already know that since that’s what Evan said when he introduced me, right?"

Eternity nodded, perfectly remembering this information.

"I wasn’t particularly close to Freiheit," she said, her tone not particularly oozing with fondness. "since he had the reputation of being a flirt and a player back then."

"I think it still applies until now." Eternity spoke, a small smile forming on her lips as she remembered her interaction with the man.

"Really now?" Edelweiss looked at her with an unreadable expression. "Though I’m not surprised, to be honest. Anyway," she shook her head, returning to the subject at hand. "Evan, who was 2 years my junior, was ironically closer to me than his brother. Maybe it’s because Evan and I were in the student council back then, so I had more opportunities to interact with him than Freiheit."

Eternity had no idea what a student council was but pretended that she did and urged Edelweiss to continue.

"I was the student council president while he was my trusty secretary, so he was always by my side back then. Even though Evan was a bit reserved around girls, which I thought was because he was just young, he didn’t seem to mind me. In fact, he told me that I was the only girl he felt comfortable with. In hindsight, that day before my graduation, Evan was probably planning to confess to me. But I blocked off any advances from him and told him what I truly felt about him..."

"That you only think of him as a younger brother." Eternity ended for her.

Edelweiss nodded.

"I remember Evan’s disheartened face that day and how he promised me that I’d change my opinion toward him soon. Though that never happened,. Maybe it’s because I lost all contact with everyone from school after graduation, so he never got to make me change my mind, or maybe I have a strong familial fondness for him. That’s why."

Eternity hummed, analyzing what Edelweiss had just shared. "May I ask something, Edelweiss?"

"Sure, what is it?"

"This might be unrelated to Evan, but how did you lose contact with everyone from school?"

Eternity paused, seeing Edelweiss’s face morph into an unreadable expression and her body turn rigid.

"But if it’s something you’re not comfortable talking about," she tried to add.

"Oh no, it’s fine!" But Edelweiss interjected and assured her. "It’s just one of the saddest periods of my life, that’s all."

"What happened?" Eternity asked, and her tone was filled with a combination of concern and curiosity.

"As soon as I graduated from high school, I got shipped out to another country to get into an arranged marriage with some prince, that’s all."

Eternity’s eyebrows furrowed, taking in this information that Edelweiss had just shared nonchalantly.

"So you’re literally a princess?"

"You could say that." Edelweiss laughed mirthlessly, looking away from her. "But he’s the king now, so I could’ve been the queen if he wanted to, but he divorced me the moment I turned 30."

Edelweiss’s expression scrunched up in pure hatred.

"Imagine that," she whispered, though it seemed like she was telling this more to herself than to Eternity. "I gave my youth to him, but he threw me away the moment I got old and wrinkly."

Eternity wanted to tell her that she was still young and that her former husband was an idiot.

But Edelweiss changed the topic before she could even speak.

"How about you, Eternity?" Edelweiss smiled cheekily, not wanting their mood to go sour. "Can I ask a few things about you and Evan?"

Eternity blinked, surprised at the sudden shift in the trajectory of the conversation. Hesitantly, she nodded.

"So, how did you two meet?" Edelweiss smiled widely, as if she had been meaning to ask this the moment she laid her eyes on Eternity.

Eternity swallowed the imaginary lump forming in her throat, and a trail of sweat dripped down the side of her face.

’Here it goes again...’ she thought.
