Chapter 73: The Brother-In-Law of the Doll

The sight of his brother Freiheit standing at his door stunned Evan to his core.

It had been a couple of weeks—almost a month—since they last saw each other. Things didn’t go exactly well between the two of them. In fact, it went rather awry.

But could you blame him?

Freiheit was dating their sister—well, at least Freiheit’s adopted sister and Evan’s full-blooded sister—like they were some characters in Game of Thrones!

Maybe it would’ve been acceptable if they lived in a fictional world, but they didn’t!

This was reality!

"Evan," Freiheit spread his arms wide, going in for a bear hug. "I haven’t seen you since—"

Evan slammed the door on his face.

"Evan!" Freiheit yelled out as he pounded on the door repeatedly. "Come on, Evan! At least hear me out!"

Evan pretended to not hear him and was about to go back to the living room when the knocking was now accompanied by Freiheit smashing the doorbell.

It was such a headache-inducing commotion that Evan went back to the door, but he didn’t open it.

"If you keep making a scene and won’t leave right this instance, I might call the police on you," Evan threatened.

The ringing and knocking finally stopped. Evan’s tense shoulder finally relaxed, and he was about to head inside when he heard Freiheit scoff from behind the door.

"You wouldn’t."

Evan cocked an eyebrow. This bastard had the audacity to challenge him? "Oh, I will, Freiheit. I—"

"We both know that you wouldn’t want the old man to find me in a police station. And you definitely won’t want him to know it was you who got me there."

By old man, Freiheit referred to their father, Evan’s adoptive father, the founder and former CEO of Blue Royal, Blau Royall.

Evan fell silent, considering his words.

Freiheit had always been Mister Royall’s problem child.

The last time Evan visited him in his countryside mansion, Mister Royall was complaining about Freiheit’s lack of concrete and feasible plans for the future.

Evan didn’t want to give him more headaches, and things wouldn’t look good on Freiheit and Evan’s side if Mister Royall found out that Evan sent Freiheit to prison for public disturbance!

Evan finally relented, opening the door.

As soon as he opened it, he saw Freiheit grinning with his pearly white teeth as if he had just won the lottery.

Not like a jackpot in a lottery was something remotely close to Freiheit’s supposed beer empire if he didn’t become the black sheep of the family.

"You should be grateful that I am greatly indebted to Mr. Royall." Evan huffed.

"Yes." Freiheit animatedly dabbed his non-existent tears with a handkerchief. "I’m very grateful that you have a very strong sense of gratitude."

"A trait you don’t have." Evan pointed this out.

Freiheit could only laugh. "True."

"So, what do you want?" He demanded, leaning on the doorframe.

Freiheit blinked blankly. "What do I want?

Evan wasn’t sure if he was faking it or if he was genuinely clueless.

"You couldn’t have just gone here for no reason, could you?" Evan said, almost sounding accusing.

Freiheit raised his eyebrows, wrinkling his forehead. "Can’t I just visit my brother and ask for his forgiveness?"

"You’re in a relationship with our sister," Evan reminded him, as if he didn’t know this already. "How could I forgive you?"

"Evan, please," Freiheit pleaded.

Just as Evan was about to argue more, probably insulting him twice or thrice, Eternity appeared in the hallway.

"Who’s our visitor--" She stopped mid-speech upon realizing who it was. "Freiheit!"

Eternity excitedly ran towards the doorstep, just like a kid who had candy dangling on her face.

"Eternity, hey—" Before Freiheit could finish his sentence, she wrapped her arms around him.

"I have missed you!" Eternity exclaimed, pressing her face against his chest.

"I’ve missed you, too," Freiheit said back gently, returning her embrace.

He looked at Evan, who was now crossing his arms, and had a disapproving expression on his face.

"You should be grateful that Eternity likes you," he mumbled as he turned around and motioned for him. "Come inside."

"And grateful I shall be," Freiheit chuckled, patting Eternity’s head like she were some adorable animal. "I promise to return the favor someday, Eternity."

"You’re welcome?" Eternity smiled at him, though her eyes were wide with confusion. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Once inside, the three of them went to the living room, where Freiheit sat on the sofa while the other two remained standing.

"Why am I the only one sitting?" Freiheit asked wearily.

"Oh, sorry!" Eternity exclaimed. "I was planning to get you some drinks, so there’s no need for me to sit down already."

Meanwhile, Evan was too angry and too proud to sit beside him.

"Is there any particular drink that you prefer, Freiheit?" She continued.

Evan wasn’t sure if Eternity was completely oblivious or was intentionally ignoring his foul mood.

"Beer," Freiheit said, laughing at his own irony. "Although I don’t think it’s socially appropriate to drink beer in the early hours of the morning,"

"We don’t mind," Eternity assured. "Although I don’t think we have any beer inside our fridge."

Freiheit raised an eyebrow in disbelief.

"The CEO of a beer company doesn’t have a stock of his own beer in his fridge?"

"That’d make me look vain," Evan argued.

"What about other brands?" He asked pointedly.

Evan rolled his eyes, as if this were supposed to be obvious.

"Then I would be supporting my competitors."

Freiheit burst out laughing. "You’re ever so earnest, Evanescence Holz."

Knowing this wasn’t meant to be a compliment, and also adding to the fact that he used his full name, Evan opened his mouth to tell him off. But before he could, Freiheit shifted his gaze to Eternity to answer her question.

"Soda will be fine."

"I don’t think it’s socially appropriate to drink soda at this time of the day, either," Evan pointed out.

"But we don’t mind," Eternity assured him again. "Plus, we have that in stock. I’ll be right back."

Eternity made her way to the kitchen, and Evan and Freiheit were left alone together.

"Well?" Evan asked impatiently. "What can you say about yourself?"
