Chapter 74: Reconciliation Attempt with the Brother-In-Law

Freiheit’s normally light-hearted demeanor took on a grave tone as he intertwined his fingers together and rested his elbows on his knees.

"I just want to reconcile with you, Evan."

"Again, Freiheit," Evan said, emphasizing his words. "How can we ever reconcile knowing the fact that you’re dating my sister?"

"Our sister," Freiheit corrected before he realized the mistake he made and how he was proving Evan’s point. "Fuck--"

"See!" Evan scoffed, using his hands for emphasis. "You see her as a sister, yet you’re dating her! Don’t you have any sense of morality?!"

"Evan," he said with an unusually vulnerable tone in his voice. "I know it might be too much for you and it might be something you might never understand, but I love Cynthia and she loves me, too. I hope this doesn’t ruin our relationship—"

"Do you hear yourself?!" Evan shouted, walking in front of the coffee table just to slam his hands on it. "How could this NOT ruin our relationship when you’re doing something immoral right in front of me?"

Freiheit was never the type to lose his cool, but it seemed like even Evan had reached his final straw because Freiheit angrily spat out.

"Who are you to talk about morals when you have done a lot worse things than I did?" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Evan opened his mouth, then closed it. He opened it again, before shutting it yet again. This repeated itself a few more times before he resigned himself by looking away from Freiheit and walking away to the corner of the room.

"I did things because I needed to do them, not because I wanted to do them," Evan said through gritted teeth. Though his words sounded more like he was convincing himself than Freiheit.

It only dawned on Freiheit that he lost his temper with Evan after seeing hearing his words.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean what I just said," Freiheit admitted with an air of sincere remorse.

Evan didn’t say anything in return. He just continued to stare at the carpeted floor of the living room, looking evidently pained.

"Let’s... Let’s just agree to disagree on this, Evan." He suggested, but it seemed as though he did not really believe what he was trying to propose.

"This isn’t one of those simple matters that can be simple ’agree to disagree’ on," Evan argued.

In reaction, Freiheit’s mouth curled into a narrow line.

"I figured you would say that." He laughed cruelly.

Freiheit’s mocking laughter echoed in the room, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. Evan finally looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of frustration and exhaustion.

"What’s so amusing?" Evan snapped, his tone sharp.

Freiheit’s smirk faded as he sighed. He ran a hand through his hair, a rare display of vulnerability.

"I let my frustration get the better of me, and I’m sorry, okay? But hear me out Evan when I say that even if we don’t see eye to eye on this matter, we’re still brothers. We can’t let this ruin--"

Evan sneered. "It’s because we’re brothers that’s why--"

Eternity returned with a tray of an assortment of sodas and some Franz buns, causing Evan to stop mid-shout.

"Sorry for the delay!" She said in a sing-song voice, completely oblivious this time, Evan was sure, of the tension in the air. "I don’t know what soda you liked, so I brought one of everything available."

She raised the tray to show the four different brands of soda for emphasis.

"Oh, and have you eaten breakfast, Freiheit?" She queried, though not really waiting for an answer. "Because if you haven’t, here’s some leftover Franz buns from breakfast."

As Eternity set the soda cans and plate of Franz buns on the table, Freiheit watched her with a look as if he were utterly impressed with her.

"My, you’re such a good host!"

Eternity giggled. "Thank you, Freiheit. That’s quite nice of you."

"You’re turning out to be quite some wife material, Eternity!" Freiheit commented. "I said it before but I’ll say it again: I should’ve bought you for myself!"

He even had the guts to joke around.

The fucking bastard.

"See!" Evan shouted. "You dare flirt with Eternity even if you’re dating Cynthia?!"

Freiheit looked at him quizzically.

"Are you angry because I’m flirting with Eternity in front of you, or are you angry because I’m flirting with Eternity even if I’m dating Cynthia?"

Evan spluttered incredulously before pausing as if contemplating the question himself.

"B-Both!" He finally decided.

"Oh." Eternity exclaimed and her eyes darted from Evan to Freiheit, finally noticing what was going on between them.

Even though this should’ve been obvious from the start.

"I will step out for the time being and give you two lads some space to resolve your issues," she stated before awkwardly stepping out of the room.

Now, the two were once again left alone together. Freiheit reached for an orange soda can on the coffee table, letting out a dry laugh.

"Because if it’s any consolation, I’m no longer dating Cynthia."

A slight gasp slipped out of Evan’s mouth as his blue eyes widened. "What?"

Wasn’t this what Evan wanted all along? So why did this surprise him so much?

"Yeah," Freiheit nodded, pulling the tab on his drink.

Upon opening, the carbonated beverage produced a fizzing noise.

"But weren’t you just..." Evan trailed off, seemingly confused. "You said you loved Cynthia, and..."

"I do," Freiheit said, sipping on his soda can. "I love her with all my heart, and I know she loves me, too."

He paused, casting an envious glance toward Evan.

"But her love for me isn’t as strong as her love for you."

Evan was at a loss for words. Freiheit gave him a bitter smile as he went on.

"She broke up with me after we left your apartment. She said she could never live with the fact that you hated her."

"Did Cynthia really...?" Evan froze mid-sentence, as if taken aback.

Freiheit bobbed his head as he settled the can down.

"She did."
