Chapter 75: Reconciliation with the Brother-In-Law

The news that Cynthia had broken up with Freiheit was something he should’ve been glad to hear, yet for some reason, Evan’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.

"I..." Evan tried to speak, but no words would come out.

"Don’t tell me you feel bad for me now, brother." Freiheit laughed, though there was no hint of joy in his eyes.

"I don’t," Evan admitted, to the contrary. "I’m just surprised, that’s all."

"Ouch!" Freiheit grabbed his chest as if he were having a heart attack, his signature reaction to Evan’s quips. "Maximum emotional damage!"

Evan found himself laughing at Freiheit’s consistent antics, only to look away embarrassedly when he realized what he had just done. When he finally returned his gaze to Freiheit, he was looking at Evan with wide blue eyes.

"You finally laughed."

Evan furrowed his eyebrows, looking at Freiheit with a hint of confusion. "What do you mean?"

"You have been scowling since the minute I got inside your apartment." Freiheit pointed out.

There it was again. The scowl returned to Evan’s face.

"You’re just doing it on purpose now.

"This is my signature look." Evan adamantly stated.

Freiheit sprang into fits of laughter, clutching his stomach for dear life. Evan shook his head, attempting to conceal the curve that was forming on the corner of his mouth as a result of his brother’s contagious cackles.

As Freiheit’s laughter subsided, his usually carefree expression shifted into one of rare seriousness, a feat that was borderline impossible for him.

"Evan," Freiheit said solemnly. "I beg of you. I beg that you’ll have it in your heart to forgive me."

Evan pressed his lips together as if gathering his thoughts.

"I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive you, Freiheit," Evan admitted.

A hint of sadness crept into Freiheit’s face, his head dropping slightly.

"But I don’t want our bond as brothers to be destroyed either." Evan continued, his tone softening.

Freiheit slowly looked up, and his blue eyes lit up with hope.

Evan opened his arms invitingly. Freiheit rose from his seat, walked towards him, and returned the hug.

"Thank you, brother." Freiheit’s voice trembled as he clutched the back of Evan’s shirt tightly. "Thank you so much."

Evan patted Freiheit’s back harshly in response, causing Freiheit to cough at each blow. They broke away from one another and started laughing uncontrollably.

Meanwhile, Eternity was watching them from the doorstep of the living room. Her face was scrunched up as she tried to make sense of the scene she had just witnessed. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Is brotherhood supposed to be like this...?"

"These taste amazing, Eternity!" Freiheit exclaimed, leaning on the sofa as he munched on the Franz buns.

"Aren’t you spoiling me with praise today?" While Eternity, who sat in the armchair beside the sofa, teased.

But judging from her expression, she was utterly pleased with her ego being stroked.

"I only give credit where it’s due." Freiheit bowed as if he were a performer in a play.

Playing along, Eternity clapped her hands enthusiastically.

Evan, who was now sitting next to Freiheit, was also devouring some buns, as if he hadn’t already had a taste earlier this morning or simply hadn’t had enough of his fill.

"And credit Eternity deserves," Evan nodded in agreement. "I don’t know why I didn’t let her cook sooner."

"Because you thought I would burn the whole apartment complex down!" Eternity reminded him.

"There’s a possibility you could’ve," he insisted.

"But I didn’t," Eternity argued.

Seeing that he had no way to win this argument, Evan shifted his attention back to Freiheit and was about to retort to his initial statement when he noticed Freiheit was staring at them in amusement.

"I just wish I got you Eternity sooner," Freiheit smiled, though his eyes had a hint of sadness in them. "I’ve never seen you this happy talking to a woman since Edelweiss back when we were in high school."

"Speaking of Edelweiss," Evan cleared his throat, noticing that Eternity froze. She probably didn’t want to hear about how head over heels he was for Edelweiss back then. "I heard you gave her my address."

"Oh, she told you?" He gasped, as if surprised by this revelation.

"Why wouldn’t she?" Evan asked in puzzlement.

"Because I told her not to."

"Hnn!" Evan made an incomprehensible sound, placing the half-bitten bun back on the plate. "Which reminds me, you told Edelweiss something I told you not to!"

Freiheit arched an eyebrow. "Which is?"

"You said that I haven’t moved on from her!"

Eternity’s expression noticeably darkened.

"... Which is not true," Evan added, just for safety measures.

Her expression finally relaxed.

Freiheit’s eyes darted from Evan to Eternity. "Did I get you into trouble?"

"Yes," Evan said. "Yes, you did."

"I said it as a joke." Freiheit laughed nervously as he saw Eternity glowering at him. "Did she take it seriously?"

"She didn’t," Evan reassured him "But she made fun of me for it like a kindergartener."

"As expected from Edelweiss," Freiheit chuckled. "I hope she’ll never change."

Evan nodded in agreement.

"Well?" Freiheit asked, shaking his can to check if it had any contents left. Judging from the sound it made, it only had a few left. "Did something interesting happen during her visit?"

"... Because of Eternity’s little field trip in the amusement park, she became more interested in learning about the outside world," Evan explained.

Eternity frowned at his choice of wording but didn’t say anything.

"Oh?" Freiheit exclaimed. "And what did you do to remedy that?"

"The same as what I’ve been doing for the past few weeks: I give her access to all sorts of books, music, movies—things like that."

Freiheit gave a knowing nod.

"But it isn’t enough," Eternity pouted helplessly. "I want hands-on experience in the outside world! I don’t want to be trapped in this apartment like some sort of fish trap in its bowl!"

Freiheit hummed as if giving her sentiments some consideration.

"I agree with Eternity," he remarked. "You’re wasting her potential by locking her up inside your apartment when she could go learn a lot more things that’ll make her enjoy what it means to be human."

This made Eternity do a little happy dance on her seat while Evan let out a defeated sigh.

"What can you recommend?" Evan inquired.

Freiheit adjusted his position on his seat as he answered.

"Why not send her to school?"
