Chapter 81: Chapter 81: So Annoying

Nathaniel Nathan trailed off, loosening his hold on her slightly. His deep eyes gazed steadily into hers as he said softly, "I grew up with my grandfather. He’s incredibly important to me, so, Vera... you were amazing today."

Vera Xavier knew he had an awkward personality. He was obviously trying to thank her but had a strange way of putting it. She said softly, "I didn’t really do anything."

Nathaniel Nathan reached out and gently stroked her head. "But I will remember this kindness. For a favor this great, I feel the only way I can repay you is by giving myself to you."

Vera Xavier was so taken aback by his words that she nearly choked, breaking into a fit of coughs. ’The Nathaniel Nathan I’ve met since my rebirth has to be a fake!’ she thought.

’Oh god, give me back the cold, aloof Nathaniel from my past life!’

Nathaniel Nathan then asked, "Did you come to my house today looking for me?"

Vera had, in fact, gone there looking for him, but his direct question made her feel that admitting it would be a little too forward. She cleared her throat and said, "Like I said before, I was just passing by."

His gaze deepened, and a smile played on his lips. "Is that so? Well, in that case, you should ’pass by’ my house more often when you’re free. I’ll do my best to be home, so we can have a ’chance encounter.’"

Hearing this, Vera felt as if a feather had gently tickled her heart. An indescribable sensation spread through her entire body. She cleared her throat and stammered, "I... I wasn’t trying to have a chance encounter with you..."

"Then what were you doing at my house?" Nathaniel pressed, not ready to let it go.

Vera could only stubbornly make up a story. "Er, I suddenly remembered that a flatbread shop near your house makes really good ones, so I thought I’d go buy a few."

Nathaniel glanced at her dress, which clearly had no pockets, then at her empty hands. He raised an eyebrow. "Were you planning to buy flatbread by performing the legendary feat of getting something for nothing?"

’His personality is just the worst,’ Vera thought, annoyed. ’He already figured it out, why does he have to force me to say it out loud!’

She huffed. "Fine! You just want me to admit that I went to your house looking for you today. I admit it! Now you’re not allowed to laugh at me!"

At her words, the smile on Nathaniel’s lips widened. He said gently, "Why would I laugh at you? I’m happy you came looking for me."

In this life or her last, Vera had never heard him speak so tenderly. His voice was so soft and pleasant it made her heart flutter.

She couldn’t help but look up at him. The icy mask was gone from his face, and his entire demeanor seemed so much warmer. The handsome lines around his eyes seemed even more striking than before, and she suddenly realized he wasn’t as cold as she’d always perceived him to be.

Since he was holding her, they were incredibly close, their breaths mingling in the small space between them. That, combined with his focused gaze, made her heart skip a beat, and a blush crept up her cheeks.

His gaze was fixed on her. Her soft, warm body was in his arms, and his eyes fell on her delicate pink lips. They seemed to have a faint sheen under the light, making them look even more alluring.

Nathaniel Nathan was never one to deny himself. He lowered his head, about to kiss her lips, when a cough sounded from nearby. He whipped his head around to see Master Nathan, now awake, watching them with eyes that glinted with amusement.
