Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Background Check

Vera Xavier’s gaze met Master Nathan’s smiling eyes. When she remembered how close she had just been to Nathaniel Nathan, her face instantly flushed red to the tips of her ears.

She couldn’t believe her luck. The first time she got a little close to Nathaniel Nathan, and his grandfather had to catch them in the act. ’This is mortifying!’

Master Nathan shot Nathaniel Nathan a glare. "I’m the patient here. Can’t you two show a little more concern for me?"

In truth, he had been awake when Nathaniel Nathan held Vera Xavier. He was just curious to see what they would do, so he pretended to sleep.

He had always thought Nathaniel Nathan was a block of wood, incapable of expressing his feelings. He never expected his grandson, who was usually as dense as a log, to have so many moves when it came to charming a young woman.

He didn’t really mind them being so close, but as an old man, seeing them like that made him worry that his incredibly audacious grandson might do something inappropriate. That was why he had cleared his throat.

Vera Xavier said, a little embarrassed, "You two chat. I should be going."

Nathaniel Nathan grabbed her hand. "I’ll take you home later. Grandpa has been wanting to meet you, and since you’re here today, you might as well come say hello."

Vera Xavier was a little stunned. ’Uh, is this a meet-the-parents situation?’

Although she had mentally prepared for this before coming to find him, she never expected to meet his grandfather under such circumstances.

Her eyes darted around. Realizing she couldn’t get out of it, she smiled and greeted him, "Hello, Grandpa."

Master Nathan smiled, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Young lady, what’s your name?"

"My name is Vera Xavier," Vera replied obediently.

Master Nathan nodded. "Vera... The one and only. A fine name indeed!"

Vera didn’t actually think her name was anything special, so she just smiled and said, "My mom picked it."

Master Nathan then asked, "How old are you?"

"Eighteen. I’m graduating from high school this year," Vera answered.

Master Nathan was about to ask another question, but Nathaniel Nathan cut in. "Her name is Vera Xavier. She’s eighteen, a student at No. 1 High, and she’s taking her college entrance exams in June. Both of her parents are alive and well, and she has an older brother and a younger sister. If there’s anything else you want to know, I’ll give you the full report another day. Don’t grill her in person. You’re making her nervous."

Master Nathan paused, stunned for a moment, before chiding him with a laugh. "You little brat, already getting protective, are you? A kind-faced old man like me isn’t scary. Right, Vera?"

Vera just smiled. It was a difficult question to answer. It wasn’t that she was afraid of Master Nathan, but it really was her first time meeting his family, and she was genuinely a little nervous.

Nathaniel Nathan looked at his grandfather and said, "Grandpa, you just had a heart attack. The doctor said you need to rest. I suggest you lie down and save your strength."

Master Nathan glared at him. "I just want to have a little chat with your girlfriend. Why are you being so stingy?"

"I’m doing this for your own good." Nathaniel Nathan tucked the blanket around his grandfather.

Just then, Lana Cheney walked in with the food she had bought. Nathaniel Nathan said to her, "Take good care of Grandpa. I’ll be right back."

Lana Cheney asked, "Aren’t you going to eat?"

Nathaniel Nathan replied, "We’ll eat out."

With that, he pulled Vera Xavier toward the door. Feeling it was a bit rude to leave so abruptly, she turned back and waved to Master Nathan. He smiled and waved back, his grin full of meaning.
