Chapter 142: I don’t have a choice...

"Yin Ru, do you want to personally kill the child that you have looked after for so long?"

Yin Ru gulped as she heard this question and for a second there, she panicked, not knowing what to do.

"W-Why would I be proven guilty? I did nothing wrong!" Jie Fu Lian desperately tried to defend himself as he shouted.

"Jie Ming, you are right. You did nothing wrong," Jie Yang Zan sighed as he spoke, "I am the one who was wrong."

"Eh?"

"I should have never brought you here. I should have never raised you like this."

Jie Fu Lian felt his heart ache as he heard these words. He didn’t know what he had done wrong and he couldn’t help but feel as if he was being abandoned.

"Jie Ming, please take this money and run away. Run away and don’t let them catch you. As your father, this is the only thing I can do for you right now."

Tears uncontrollably flowed down Jie Fu Lian’s cheeks and this time, he didn’t even have the courage to keep defending himself nor did he have the energy beg for his father’s forgiveness.

In the end, Jie Fu Lian wiped away his tears and straightened his back as he firmly spoke, "I’ll go..."

"Jie Ming!" Yin Ru cried out as she looked at the man in disbelief.

"Senior Martial sister, my father is not an unreasonable man. I believe him and you should too. He would only do what is best for me."

Yin Ru’s eyebrows creased together and she looked heartbroken as she heard these words.

Jie Fu Lian cupped his hands and kowtowed to Jie Yang Zan as he spoke, "Father, thank you for raising me. It seems that I have troubled you a lot. I’ll apologize for it all and I’ll follow your orders."

"Jie Ming... Don’t resent me too much. I’m not throwing you away. I also do not wish to do this but there are times when you must do things that you would never want to do."

A tear trailed down Jie Fu Lian’s cheeks as he heard these words and he immediately wiped the tear away as he nodded his head.

Even as he took the money and left the Yan Sect, he could not believe what was happening. Never could he have imagined that he would be thrown away like this...

After he had left, Yin Ru also packed up her bags and decided to follow him but was stopped by Jie Yang Zan.

"He is a half-demon."

Yin Ru looked at the sect master as if he had gone mad and scolded him, "He is your son! How can he be a half-demon?! Shizun, have you finally lost your mind?"

Jie Yang Zan sighed as he spoke, "I raised him like my own child but that doesn’t mean he magically started sharing the same blood as me. Yin Ru, you should know this better than anyone else. Jie Fu Lian isn’t my real son. He is the grandson of the demon king Shen Fang and I only looked after him under the orders of Shen Fang."

Yin Ru clenched her fist as she heard this and immediately refused to believe it as she gritted out, "Nonsense! Jie Ming is your son. He is not related to the demon king and he is not a half-demon."

"The money that I just gave him," Jie Yang Zan frowned as he asked, "Where do you think it came from?"

"Huh?"

"Do you think our sect is that rich?"

Yin Ru pursed her lips and refused to give a response to that.

"Since the beginning itself, our sect hasn’t been doing that well. We have a good reputation but not enough money. However, a sect cannot survive on reputation alone, it needs money. Yin Ru, why do you think we have held out for so long? Why do you think we’ve never worried about money?"

Yin Ru gulped as she heard this question and stumbled a step backward.

"The gold coins that Jie Fu Lian took with him today... Where do you think it all came from?"

Deep in her heart, Yin Ru knew the answer to that question but she still refused to accept it.

"Since the beginning itself, the demon king has been supporting us. He has been paying for all our expenses and the money that I gave Jie Fu Lian today also belongs to that man. You might think I’m despicable but that’s alright. You deserve to know the truth. In exchange for raising Jie Fu Lian, the demon king has been paying me for all these years."

Yin Ru gasped in shock as she heard this and her eyes almost looked as if they were ready to jump out of their sockets. Tears started uncontrollably flowing down her cheeks and her muscles tensed up.

"By the end of this investigation, he is going to be proven guilty... Not because he has committed a crime but because he was born as the demon king’s grandson." Jie Yang Zan looked down at the ground with a sigh as he spoke.

"Shizun... How could you...?" Yin Ru muttered out with her shaking voice, "How could you throw him away when you know all this?"

Yin Ru was surely shocked to learn the truth but more than that, she was heartbroken to know that Jie Yang Zan had abandoned Jie Fu Lian just because of this.

"You knew everything..." Yin Ru added as she glared at Jie Yang Zan with her teary eyes and her red cheeks, "You know he’s innocent. Jie Ming has always been a good child. He was always obedient and listened to everything you said. He loved you and looked up to you... So how could you have done this to him...? How could you abandon him like this?"

"I don’t have a choice-"

"You have a choice!" Yin Ru shouted, cutting him off, "You have the choice to support him! To stand up for him! To help prove that he is innocent!"

Jie Yang Zan lowered his head and didn’t say anything as a response. Deep in his heart, he also felt guilty about it and he knew that Yin Ru was right, but he also knew that even if he were to be given a second chance, he would make the same choice and send Jie Fu Lian away.

"He ran away today but how far do you think he would go?" Yin Ru added as she asked, "How long do you think he can keep running? He might run away today but he’ll be caught tomorrow. What do you think would happen to him then? Do you think people would believe him when he says he is innocent? Shizun, you raised him since he was an infant! How can you not feel any sympathy for him? In the first place itself, if you decided to take him in, you should’ve held out till the end! You should’ve protected him till the end!"

"Yin Ru, I am his father... but I am also the sect master of the Yan Sect. He is not the only one who needs me to look after him. If I let him stay, I’ll be putting our sect in danger. No matter how sympathetic I feel towards him, do you think I am in a position where I can put his safety above our sect...?" Jie Yang Zan looked directly into Yin Ru’s eyes as he unhesitantly continued, "You are young and with your youth, comes your impulsive nature. You do not fear the future but I do. You do not think about the safety of the entire sect but I do. At times like these, your emotions control your actions, but I cannot afford to be like you. If I let my emotions get the best of me, I’ll not only be risking my own life but I would also be putting thousands of other lives in danger."

"In the face of danger, we should all stick together... Shizun, that’s what you have always taught me," Yin Ru sniffled back her tears as she spoke, "I have lived a reckless life because I know that even if I fall, the sect has my back. I thought we were a family... But I guess I was wrong. I guess you have been lying to me all this time."

"So are you going to follow after him?"

Yin Ru clenched her fist and gritted her teeth as she heard this question.

Jie Yang Zan sighed in disappointment and suddenly, Yin Ru’s entire body went stiff and she could no longer move according to will.

"I didn’t want to go this far..." Jie Yang Zan pursed his lips into a thin line as he spoke, "I’m sorry but I cannot let you go after him."

Yin Ru wanted to say something but even her lips were no longer listening to her.

"Don’t worry. This is just a little trick that I learned from Shen Fang. When you calm down, I’ll come back to release the spell."

Yin Ru never thought she would live to see such a day when Jie Yang Zan resorted to using such cheap tricks.
