Chapter 74: There was a thief?

The little wolf cub turned back into a man and without wasting any further time, he started looking through all the books and records kept inside this record room.

It took him almost a whole hour to get through just a single section of records and even after going through all that trouble, he was still unable to find what he was looking for.

He had two hours left and he started getting a little impatient.

When the three guards were done disabling all the traps and tearing up all the talismans monitoring this place, they went back to their respective stations and stood there like lifeless puppets, still under Jie Fu Lian’s art of manipulation.

If Jie Fu Lian was to use them, perhaps his job would become a little easier, but he was afraid that when they woke up from his control, they would remember what had happened and when that happens, it would become a bit troublesome.

Jie Fu Lian looked around the record room for another hour and he finally realized that some of the records were missing. To be more exact, all the records involving the Yan sect and Jie Fu Lian were missing. They had been purposefully hidden away. If the Jin Sect was innocent, they wouldn’t have bothered to hide such records. As expected, there was truly something weird about those cases.

There was only one more hour left and Jie Fu Lian felt that he couldn’t go back empty-handed.

In the end, he started searching for records that mentioned anything about the Yu sect.

There weren’t that many records involving the Yu Sect and the ones that he found mostly contained information that he was already aware of.

When the hour was almost up, he finally took a single book containing information about Jin Shifeng and decided to leave the place but just as he was leaving, another book caught his eye and he decided to take it with him as well. With two books in hand, he fled the scene.

As Hua Tianshu had warned, after three hours, the two puppets of the little wolf cub and Duan Luoyang had turned back into lifeless paper puppets.

Duan Luoyang quickly defeated the two guards and returned to his room while the little wolf cub went back to Hua Tianshu’s room.

"Did you find it?" Hua Tianshu immediately asked.

The little wolf cub shook his head.

Hua Tianshu frowned a little as he heard this and nodded his head with a sigh, "This was to be expected."

"Somebody hid those records away or destroyed them completely," The little wolf cub informed and with a sigh, added, "The Jin sect can’t be trusted."

Hua Tianshu nodded his head.

"What about you? Did you find anything?" The little wolf cub questioned back.

Hua Tianshu pursed his lips into a thin line as he shook his head, "Nothing."

At the very next moment, there was a knock on the door.

"It’s already this late. Who is it?" Hua Tianshu’s voice was calm and clear as he questioned.

"I apologize for disturbing Daoist Hua at this time of the night, but a thief broke into the record room today. I’m afraid I’m gonna have to ask you to come out and join us at the main hall."

Hua Tianshu was silent for a moment as he heard this and stood up from the bed as he picked up the little wolf cub and opened the door before asking, "Did you find the thief?"

The Jin sect disciple looked down at the little wolf cub and gulped as he felt a little suspicious.

"We failed to catch them but we have a few witnesses."

Hua Tianshu nodded his head in understanding as he heard this and spoke, "Lead the way."

The Jin Sect disciple gave one last glance to the little wolf cub before nodding his head and politely guiding Hua Tianshu away to the main hall.

When they entered the main hall, the atmosphere felt a little too cold and there were many who accusingly looked at the little wolf cub and Hua Tianshu.

Shortly after they entered, Duan Luoyang was also escorted to the main hall.

Jin Long cupped his hands and bowed his head towards Hua Tianshu as he spoke, "Hua Gongzi, my apologies for disturbing you so late."

"I heard there was a thief?" Hua Tianshu asked as he got straight to the point, "If that’s the case, it’s only right that I cooperate."

Jin Long awkwardly chuckled as he heard this, "I’m glad Hua Gongzi feels that way. This might come off as a bit rude but I have to ask this. Hua Gongzi, where were you for the past three hours?"

Hua Tianshu’s eyes narrowed down on the man in an intimidating manner and instead of answering the question, he questioned back, "Are you suspecting me?"

Jin Long gulped as he heard this and immediately waved his hands in front of him as he denied it, "That’s not it. There is no way Hua Gongzi would do something like that. It’s just that..."

"Just that?" Hua Tianshu repeated as he raised his eyebrows.

"Two hours ago, you weren’t in your room when one of my servants came to check," Jin Long replied without any hesitation as he looked back at Hua Tianshu, "The two guards who were stationed in front of the record room claim to have been beaten by the disciple that came with you while the three stationed inside claim to have seen your wolf cub inside the record room."

"So are you suspecting me?" Hua Tianshu questioned, his voice a bit too deep.

"I don’t want to suspect you but I cannot ignore the statements of five witnesses."

"In that case, please bring out the five witnesses that you speak of."

Jin Long thought about it for a moment before he nodded his head.

The five guards who had given their testimonies were called forward and stood on one side as they looked at the little wolf cub lovingly held in Hua Tianshu’s arms and the disciple called Duan Luoyang who stood beside the man.

"Which two of you claimed to have been beaten by my disciple?" Hua Tianshu asked as raised his head and looked at the five guards.

Two of the guards hesitantly opened their mouths to say something but immediately closed them and looked away, afraid to make eye contact with the man.

"Did you see the culprit clearly?"

The two guards nodded their heads.

"What did he look like?"

"He looked exactly like the disciple that came with you," One of the guards boldly replied.

Hua Tianshu nodded his head and asked, "What was he wearing?"

"He was wearing our sect robes," The guard once again replied.

Hua Tianshu raised his eyebrows as he heard this and asked, "Did he use a sword or any other spiritual weapon that could be used to identify him?"

The two guards looked at each other and gulped as they shook their heads in unison and one of them spoke, "He didn’t have a spiritual weapon with him."

Hua Tianshu frowned as he heard this and questioned, "Then how did he beat you?"

"It was a talisman!" One of the guards cried out, "There was blood coming out of his mouth and he was constantly laughing. When we attacked, he kept dodging our attacks and then he threw an explosive talisman at us."

"He defeated you with nothing more than an explosive talisman?" Hua Tianshu’s lips twitched as he questioned, glaring at the two.

The two guards felt a little embarrassed as they heard this straightforward question that made them seem incompetent.

"It wasn’t that simple! H-He was a ghost!"

Hua Tianshu’s frown eased up a little and he raised his eyebrows as he repeated, "A ghost?"

The two guards nodded their heads in unison, "That’s right. He said he was a ghost. He had a very pale face and there was blood coming out of his mouth. When we fought, he kept laughing like a madman. He was definitely a ghost!"

"Then are you saying my disciple is a ghost?" Hua Tianshu questioned without missing a beat.

"That..." Both of the guards hesitated to say anything.

Hua Tianshu sighed as he closed his eyes and shook his head in disappointment, "I can’t believe I was called here for this nonsense."

"H-He’s definitely a ghost!" One of the guards mustered up the courage to shout as he accusingly pointed at Duan Luoyang.

Duan Luoyang also innocently pointed at himself as he mouthed, "Me? Are you sure about that?"

"Is everyone here useless?" Hua Tianshu sighed as he questioned out loud, "If he was really a ghost, would nobody have noticed?"

Jin Long gulped as he heard this and although he felt that the situation was a bit suspicious, he still nodded his head as he agreed with Hua Tianshu and spoke up, "Hua Gongzi is right. If he was a ghost, I would have been able to sense it."

The guard gritted his teeth in frustration as he heard this.

"Let’s move on," Hua Tianshu rubbed his forehead as he sighed in frustration and asked, "What about the three who saw Ai Ming?"

The other three guards who had previously been under Jie Fu Lian’s control now looked at Hua Tianshu with their foreheads covered in cold sweat as they hesitated to say anything.

"I hope you have something better to say."

"D-Daoist Hua, your wolf cub is cute but it’s fake!"
